2:32 you are correct. the 3300 and 3100 are indeed defective ryzen chips that doesn't meet the required core count for 3600 and above products. as the manufacturing process matures - less and less defective chips are produced hence why these ryzen 3 vanished like a fart in the wind which is a real shame because they are really competitive chips for their original MSRP. TLDR; the 3300 and 3100 are not purposely built cpu's. but rather a byproduct of defective chips during the (at the time new) manufacturing process. it was a godsend back then the "no chip left behind" mantra.

On top of that the defective CPU had to have a very specific configuration of good cores to be a 3300X and not a 3100 (All four good cores on the same core cluster, or CCX).
@DigitalJedi3 жыл бұрын
With AMD moving to an 8 core CCX with the current 5000 cpus it makes sense that the 5100, 5200, and 5300 variants are quite rare as losing that many cores to defects on a CCX likely means other parts of it are dead too.
@roqeyt35663 жыл бұрын
It's also why you can sometimes get disabled cores or cache to work, but it's a bit of a mess and it's usually instable Sometimes a chip has 5 working cores, and the cache is functional for a 6 core model, but one core is just not really up to the task so they bring it down to the next lower spec by disabling portions.

AMD should really start focusing on APU production, especially RDNA-based APUs because from watching the price trends of their current 5000 series CPUs with the frequent discounts on them from retailers, they're more accessible and easy to buy than their GPUs. One thing one should add, 3100 and 3300X are different internally, by the nature of the configuration of active cores per CCX in each bin of an CCD chiplet, the 3300X has an substantial advantage in memory related workloads since it essentially acts like an monolithic die architecture, with all 4 cores using the same cache, all 4 of the cores in the 3300X are IN THE SAME CCX. In the 3100 the cores are spread between BOTH CCXs, so in any workload where one core needs to "talk" a lot to another or make heavy usage of the cache, there is an severe latency penalty. This fact also explains why there are fewer 3300X's than 3100's, it is FAR more likely that at least 1 core will fail in ALL CCX's, the unique situation where all 4 cores inside the CCD are functioning only in one CCX is very rare, even more so as it would be wasteful to disable the functioning cores of the other CCX inside that same CCD chiplet, the 3300X exists only as to make sure this rare occasion where only one side of the CCD works while the other does not, doesn't results in immediate e-waste.

I was looking for one of these for a cheap streaming server box I was building, but managed to get a 3350g with an mini-ITX board (A320) for less than £200 in July. Crazy the amount of second hand stuff on the market right now.

I got one on launch day, still going strong today with my GTX 1650 Super, I remember the good days when the 3300x was £120 and the GTX 1650 Super was around £150, sadly those days are far gone now but hopefully things will improve at the budget end soon (maybe one day haha)

This chip has been readily available, brand new, in Australia despite the UK,US shortages for ~120-140GBP (220-260AUD) for some reason. Interest here has dropped off since Microsoft has failed to list it again on the latest updated list of approved chips for Windows 11. I think AMD might have asked them to kill it off since it competes with their own latest chips now.

There is a setting in Windows Graphics settings advanced menu that completely sends all the frame timings to the gpu bypassing the cpu entirely. So from there the gpu goes as fast as it can go. I have a 3950x so I tell the cpu to handle the physics instead of the gpu, using nvidia control panel. So this gives the card more resources on itself to perform better.

I have one of these. It was a great purchase for its (then) very low price. I saw some reviews and thought it looked like great value. Put in an order with a major hardware retailer but quickly realized that was going nowhere as the delivery date kept getting pushed back. So I looked around with smaller retailers and found one that had it in stock. For most games it's excellent. For that last 0.1% of titles like Cyberpunk, it's fine but not optimal. It has a tendency to run hot, which is why I fitted it with a cooler that ironically is somewhere around the price of the CPU. It does come with a perfectly adequate Wraith cooler, though.

You are 100% correct on why we didn't see more 3300X CPUs. Due to the supply shortage why would AMD want to sell CPUs like the 3100X or 3300X for less than $150 when they could use those same chips and sell them in CPUs that sell for $200-500+? Once the Zen 2 manufacturing process matured it made perfect sense for AMD to sell as much of the higher priced chips as possible with the $200 3600 being the lowest price "common" Zen 2 CPU. Largely because it could use 2 CCX's with one failed core in each CCX for each 3600. The 3100X was slightly more common than the 3300X since it could use 2 CCX's with 2 failed cores in each CCX but as the process matured 2 bad cores in a CCX happened less and less often. Now AMD has more penetration in the OEM area hence why the under $200 5300G is presently an OEM only chip and the $250+ priced APUs are available at retail. AMD still cannot make CPUs or APUs fast enough to keep up with demand most of the time so primarily selling at $200+ makes good financial sense for them. If we ever get back to a point where the demand for AMD chips is much lower than the supply only then will we see more chips available for retail sale in the under $150 range.

I remember i wanted to sell my i5 8400 and buy this 3300X even tho it could look like a downgrade but still, that CCX design could shine in CPU intensive titles like CS:GO. Sometimes it performed better fps than the R5 3600. It was like a messenger of the zen3 architecture. Unfortunately it was barely available and highly overpriced, so i skipped the plan.
@ensiel47383 жыл бұрын
I was in the same situation and wish I had waited for 5000 series. Single ccx is still the best and I think the 3300x would be better even outside of games. Even in just general system responsiveness, that single ccx design would make everything feel snappier. I went with an r5 3600 and while it has more cores and threads, I can honestly say it's still not as responsive as even an old 4th gen Intel. Although we're talking milliseconds, once you've used a single ccx chip you can really notice the difference.

I made my pc with 3300x back in September 2020..This small CPU is very good for 1080p gaming but at the same time it runs very hot. My only regret is that the 10400f started being sold for the same price as 3300x sometimes later.

I planned to get one, but then it came out and was so much over MSRP that the Ryzen 5 3600 was cheaper. That said, I stayed on a mailing list at a place to find when they'd be back in stock at a place that only sells at MSRP. They kept emailing me updates once every 2 weeks, telling me that they'd tell me when it was back in stock. It was over a year before they finally told me it was in stock. And even they sold it for $10 over MSRP.

i owned a 3300x from launch and couldnt get a BOX version so had to settle for a tray version from scan for them to be able to fulfill the order so it definetly wasnt a paper launch, i sold everything prior to the gpu/cpu launch at the start of the year in preperation for building a beast (before we knew it was an issue), only got £110 for the 3300x on ebay from someone in sweeden :( should have kept it - because it was an amazing CPU (and i downgraded from a 3950x to it).

The true reason for all these shortages IS NOT the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic! That's just a bullshit cover story told by the mainstream news agencies, in the interest of NOT causing a public panic. The true reason for all these shortages is the Long Emergency, as foretold by James Howard Kunstler! You see, the Long Emergency is caused by global resource depletion. Well, guess what: the COVID-19 cover story will only DELAY the inevitable public panic that WILL happen once people start encountering $20 per gallon gasoline and empty grocery store shelves!

Yep that's exactly right. Why sell a 3600 or 3700, that will make double or triple the profit, as a disabled $120 processor? This actually happened with the HD6970 and HD6950 GPUs. They did not have enough flawed HD6970s to sell HD6950s so they just software locked the HD6970 to the HD6950 and the HD6950 could be bios swapped into the full GPU. I'm curious if any 3300Xs can be core unlocked like the old Phenom IIs
