When I was in Northern England I was staying at a friends house and the day was Saturday. Some of my friends friends came over and we were asked if we were going to go with them Tubthumping tonight. Being a foreigner I asked what that was. After much laughter I was told that all week the "common' people were hard at work having to deal with all sorts of issues, angry customers, angry bosses etc and Saturday night was there night to go and vent off all the frustration and steam that had built up over the week. We visited 5 bars that night and at each one was a local group of people playing various instrument's and everyone singing along, dancing, toasting , etc etc. Even if you don't drink that much by the end of the night you are exhausted. Very fun indded.

The band has punk roots and a working class angle... view the lyrics from that perspective. The camaraderie of the pub, and the pride of taking shots from those in power, but getting back up again... Chumbawamba was an English rock band that formed in 1982 and disbanded in 2012. The band drew on genres such as punk rock, pop, and folk. The band are best known for their song "Tubthumping", which was nominated for Best British Single at the 1998 Brit Awards. Other singles include "Amnesia", "Enough Is Enough" (with MC Fusion), "Timebomb", "Top of the World (Olé, Olé, Olé)", and "Add Me". "Pissing the night away" would translate to "Drinking (alcoholic beverages) all night." To be pissed in England is to be drunk, to be pissed in the US is to be angry. In England, a tubthumper is a politician.

A few things to consider that makes this song more clear: 1) The group, Chumbawamba, are a UK-based group. 2) In England, "pissing" refers to drinking alcohol, not urinating. So the lyric, _"Pissin' the night away,"_ means, "Drinking the night away." 3) "Danny Boy" was a call sign for WWII British pilots, and has since become associated with social drinking in the UK (as WWII pilots often chugged beers after flying successful sorties). The song is more or less about drinking at a pub, as the person described in the song drinks a whiskey, a vodka, a lager, and cider. Presumably drunk, he sings songs of better days (another common practice among English pub drinkers).

Danny Boy is the name of a popular British song whose lyrics were written in 1913 and set to an Irish melody from the 1800s. It's been rerecorded at least 15 times since. I believe that the "Danny Boy" in the background of this song is intended as an example of "the songs that remind him of the good times" and/or the "songs that remind him of the better times." When I was in elementary school, we had to learn this song for an Irish-themed choir concert at a nursing home, and half the audience was in tears. It really resonates with old people because the song is from the point of view of a parent and/or guardian sending their child off on an extended journey that will very likely outlast the singer's remaining lifespan.
