Leave it to Jaguar to create the most extreme method of getting engine sounds into the cabin. I bought this 2014 Jaguar F-Type S on the cheap. After I got the F-Type back to the shop I got it to turn over, blowing rusty coolant all over the car and the shop. Then after putting the plugs back in it ran great even though it was burning coolant at an insane rate. I was able to drive it around the shop a little bit without so much as a misfire... but now I'm pulling the engine to solve the headgasket issues.

Myself I've found that it's always quicker and easier to remove the engine the same way the manufacturer installed the engine. If they installed it from the bottom then it usually comes out much easier that way. My 2013 focus ST had a sound symposer that did the same thing. I ended up removing the diaphragm and filling the entire block with jb weld and removing the hose from it. The diaphragms we're known to burst and cause a major vacuum/boost leak.

I was surprised about these systems on modern cars, when I found out about them back in 2014. VW have the Soundaktor, it's a speaker in the scuttle that makes engine noise that resonates through the scuttle to improve the engine sound. I disconnected it on my then new Beetle 2.0tsi, the engine sound was so disappointing without it I plugged it back in.

for those watching. I've removed the engine and transmission in my 2017 F-Type S and it's actually pretty well designed to make that happen easily. disconnect exhaust, drive shaft, coolant lines and fuel lines etc., and then disconnect two big wiring connectors. Then remove 8 big subframe bolts and out it drops just clean as anything. Goes back up nicely as well. The expensive part is the refrigerant for the A/C and getting that recharged.

Old engine came out easy enough just had to remove the harmonic balancer. Removed it on new engine and it went right in. Rolling engine over to do the torque converter and it clunks. Valves hitting piston. Here a lot of Ford 4 cylinder engines are not keyed and when I loosened the crank pulley I also loosened timing gear. My 20 Lexus RC 350 has a similar part on the intake tubing. It still creates sounds through the speakers but it first ports the intake noises towards the firewall to amplify them. Except the system on the Lexus is much more simple, I don't really think it can fail. I'll admit it sounds pretty good. There is actually a slider on the dash where you can turn up or down the volume of the sounds which is independent of the driving mode. You can put it in Sport but still turn the slider all the way off. I like the way they set it up. The first car I had that had this system was my Fiesta ST and it was completely mechanical. It was a pipe on the intake tubing that was ported into the car. This one could actually fail and create a leak. I eliminated that system because with an aftermarket intake and charge pipes you already got ridiculously loud intake noises.

I like the Mini (and likely BMW) solution. An actuator on the exhaust tip that opens up a muffler bypass in sport mode. It's still got the resonator, and I presume SOME of the exhaust still goes through the muffler, but it gets louder without being obnoxious. Put it back in regular mode and it quiets right up. I've disabled 'AktiveSound' or whatever they call it that makes the noise through the stereo and it's perfect on my JCW.

if I recall correctly, Ford did the same thing for the 2005 Mustang GT.

Ford put something similar on the Mustang GT to compensate for the super quiet OEM exhaust system. Never understood choking off the natural sound and installing extra parts to produce fake ones.

I use a pallet jack as a lift table. Blocked up with some 4x6s on the subframe. It works perfectly.

It’s the same system that they use with Mclaren. On a Mclaren it’s called an intake sound generator or ISG and they are a fairly common failure point, so much so that several aftermarket companies make small block off plugs to eliminate the unit completely.

I remember having a merkur scorpio on our lot with a non functioning hvac system due to a tiny unnecessary part that NO OTHER CAR would ever need. Since it was 10 years old, and that part was prone to failure, it couldn't be found and trying to bypass it made the car run horribly. I got lottery lucky and found one in my local pick a part.

My Subaru BRZ has something similar (totally manual, on all the time), as did my NC Mazda Miata... they actually do work, but like I said, mine were both totally manual.

I too, would prefer no fake engine sound, electronic or mechanical, piped into the cab. Not needed. Although the mechanical system pipes in real engine noise, and if the engine is making bad sounds, at least you can hear the problems, unlike an electronic system.

Just need the right combo of powertrain and exhaust 😁 Have a solo catback on my G8 GT (one muffler where the resonator was), and it's fine at highway speeds. Get it over ~2500rpm and it starts to make some noise. The car is insulated pretty well though, never knew how loud it really is until I drove behind it.

Removing that system is a PITA members just plug the hose going to the megaphone to remove the noise from the cabin.
