Me neither. But it really would have been interesting to see that dynamic. Boomer probably would have been a captain, and Apollo and Starbuck both lieutenants. It really would have been different, almost in a Lower Decks kind of way, where they might be getting chewed out for doing something risky... like maybe Maverick and Goose from Top Gun.

As an African American teenage male youth, when this first aired on network TV, I loved the fact that two of the lead actors were African Americans. Seeing Terry Carter, fly fighter pilot missions with the rank of at least Major would have been odd. Having a younger actor Lt. Boomer, be a fellow fighter pilot with Captain Apollo and Lt. Starbuck, showed that wisdom and being responsible can also be found in a younger person. (smile ... smile).

I thought I was the only one who noticed 2 Black men in a sci-fi show as a kid. Galactica and Star Wars started the Black Nerd community IMO. I was at the comic shop during the height of the Galactica remake. None of the Gen Z crowd knew that there were 2 Black actors in the original series. They also didn't know Starbuck and Boomer were originally men. It was a fun conversation with me explaining what stayed and what got changed. The Gen Z crowd was fascinated the characters mostly got along because the remake had so much interpersonal drama.

I always loved the life long Comrades/Brothers in Arms of the Adama and Tigh relationship. Adama wasn't just bearing the burden alone of saving the last surviving remnant of humanity he always had his faithful second in command at his side. I loved that this carried over in the reimagined version even though they introduced more character flaws. It was still faithful to the dynamic established by the great Lorne Green and Terry Carter.

Terry Carter filmed the pilot in a cast painted black so it wouldn't show on TV. You can see the cast during the Cimtar ambush right after the destruction of the _Atlantia_ when Tigh is at the plotting board pointing out the location of Cylon base ships. Another fact that no one seems to pick up on about Terry Carter: When Adama relieves Cain of his command of the _Pegasus_ in "The Living Legend" and puts Tigh in command, Terry Carter becomes the first black man to be seen on a visual medium commanding a science fiction capital ship, if only temporarily.

@@Fletchman1313 Sci Fi fans of the 70s did not but TV stations specially in the American south noticed since Star Trek in the 1960s. Many shows with black leads had to be put in different time slots in some parts of the south. We were lucky because around this time there were only stations out of Savannah or Jacksonville and no variety. 3 to 5 channels and that was it. Its nice to think the 70s and 80s had race blindness but it was only because you were younger and black and women voices in Hollywood were more easily muted. But Sci Fi and fantasy fans were weirdos and we were expertly ostracized specially in the US south. Heck I remember the worry that people playing D&D were losing their souls to the devil and how it was banned in some small towns. In truth counter culture people like goths and gays and black were playing it and you could pretend to be someone else. Heresy!! haha that was a different time.

@@docsavage8640To me it seemed like there was a different dynamic. Boomer was always the consummate Professional, and a bit too serious. Starbuck and Apollo were more aggressive and pushing things to the limits; Starbuck sometimes crossing the line. It seemed that (implied that pre series) Apollo was between the more serious Boomer, and fast and loose Starbuck. Apollo seemed to have been a bit more wild, until his younger Brother was killed when they were "playing Fast and Loose" and while they discovered the Cylon surprise Attack a bit early; it was still a Disaster for humanity! 😢 It seemed that after that, Apollo was more Serious, and felt the Burden of being Adama's son. Also, he was promoted to Commander of the Viper Wing (Fighter Group). Starbuck would occasionally say things that indicated that Apollo had significantly Changed. It also seemed that Boomer took over being a moderating force to Starbuck's tendency to impulsiveness. Not that Boomer was a "stick in the mud" he demonstrated Calculated risk taking and tactical aggressiveness where appropriate. Boomer just seemed to be a bit more mature.

Terry Carter had been one of my favorite actors on TV for his 7 YEARS of playing Sgt. Joe Broadhurst on McCLOUD. When he appeared as Col. Tight on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, once again the sidekick of the officer in charge, it seemed the most natural thing. He just got a promotion in rank. Herb Jefferson Jr. had appeared in a minor role on McCLOUD in at least one episode, so he was also a familiar face to me. One of my favorite moments in the pilot is when Adama has him stealing uniforms, he's caught, and he bluffs his way thru yelling about what bad shape they're in. "When Commander Adama sees these-- HE'S GONNA GO CRAZY!" Another was in "Baltar's Escape", when he walks off the bridge in a huff because a female High Council member has been hanging around there, second-guessing every decision. He shocks the pilots when he shows up at the Officers Club and sits down for a drink-- something he NEVER did since getting promoted to a command position. And while there, he lets Apollo & Starbuck know there may be trouble in the landing bay, thus heading off a disaster in the making, WITHOUT having to counter-mand the orders of the High Council member. (Infuriatingly, this hilarious scene was CUT from syndication when my local channel ran it in the 80s... but, I've got the Blu-Rays now.) I always felt that business about not socializing with the pilots was a carry-over from McCLOUD. In several later episodes, Chief of Detectives Peter B. Clifford (who got more and more irate as things went on-- purely for comedy's sake) would warn Broadhurst that if he ever wants to get anywhere, like a promotion, he's going to have to remember that he "has no friends" (referring to his good friend Sam McCloud). Tigh always seemed to me a "regular guy" who got promoted, and then, was only allowed to be friends with Adama, who was also in "command", not the pilots, who you just knew he had been one of, in earlier years. (But I don't think Adama was EVER as hard-headed as Clifford became. For a man with SO MUCH weight on his shoulders, Adama always had the biggest, warmest heart. (Except when dealing with the members of The High Council, which he was President of.)

Because of the APOLLO 11 Mission, I became a Hardcore Believer in Peaceful Earth Human Presence in Outerspace and on other Celestial Bodies; and, I became an Outerspace Science-Fiction Genre Fan. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: TOS was a major influence on me as a Pre-Teen Child. • Spacecraft • Robots / Androids • Artificial Intelligence • Racial Issues • Gender Issues • Military Warfare I knew Terry Carter from various Theater Movies and TV Shows. For me, Colonel Tigh and Boomer and Lieutenant Uhura were the only Staple Black Characters in the Live-Action Outerspace Science-Fiction Genre; and, the Live-Action Superhero Genre. Colonel Tigh as an Older Leadership Black; and, Boomer as a Younger Up & Coming Black. Lieutenant Uhura may not have as much prominence as Colonel Tigh and Boomer; however, her Crew Position was crucial for the operation of Starship "Enterprise".

In some ways, the character of Lt. Boomer as played by Herb Jefferson, Jr. still retained the "older, wiser" characteristics described in this video. In episodes like "The Hand of God", "Fire in Space", and "Gun on Ice Planet Zero", Boomer sometimes chides Apollo and Starbuck as if he were more mature.

@battlestarcollectica7106 What could have been in a season two would be a great video... Ask Glen for more... I always thought that with the 'Pegasus,' lost in Space, and looking to make repairs on 'Terra.' (Ricard Hatches novel series). It would have been cool to have 'Battlestar Pacifica,' who survived at the battle of 'Cintar.'' You could have had the Galactica find Pacifica moving outward into deep space, but with massive battle damage from the battle (Giant / Massive holes in its exterior visible to the naked eye)... which it managed to barely survive in its last-minute escape. The Cylons thought the Pacifica was going to explode, so they let go, but the fire crews were able to just barely contain the fires in order to get away and survive. Thus, the Galactica and the smaller ships in the fleet could work the repairs on her while protecting her until she she was restored back to full strength and became the fleets' second defending Battlestar.

Had no idea Terry carter passed away earlier this year (2024). I guess, as a TV actor, and not a motion picture actor, he was not on the radar of the UK mainstream news. his long and distinguished career should be remembered, nevertheless. It's really hard to imagine Terry Carter playing the role of Boomer, in the original Battlestar Galactica series, but it wouod be interesting to see hi take on the character. For me Herbert Jefferson made the character. He was clearly the level-headed character in the Apollo-Boomer-Starbuck trio. I would say he also served as Apollo's and Starbuck's 'elder brother' friend, just as Terry Carter was meant to. I just wish the series had developed Boomer better, and gave him more depth. Unlike Apollo and Starbuck, he was never given any family ties or love interests. It was good to see Boomer again in the Galactica 1980 sequel series, and once as Colonel Tigh's successor. Again, it would have been good to have had some background to this. I'm not overly fond of the makeover of Boomer's character in the 2004 Battlestar Galactica series. Making the character female didn't seem quite genuine, given that this was also the case with Starbuck, and she then did not have the same relationship with Apollo and Starbuck, that fans would have been familiar with in the original series. The they made her a Cylon as well. I think this was overdoing things...

That's one hell of a promotion, from lieutenant to Colonel. I can't picture him in Boomer's seat. Tigh has a maturity that reflects his rank. @@battlestarcollectica7106 I would have never allowed it. )p So much that could have been down with Adama and Tigh. One idea I had was if they were sent back to the destroyed colonies by a whimsical entity(maybe Orson Wells as a guest star) to be punished as one of those that were left behind. Of course it was all in their minds, but inadvertently unlocks another memory in Adama for the position of earth. It gets me so frustrated for "WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN" if they just gave it lead in time and to focus on the characters and loss of their civilization.

That original show was just magical, I love it. The two black actors, Terry Carter and Herbert Jefferson Jr. played their character great. I can't imagine they switching character roles, I don't think it would have turn out right. The show short run and first aired September 17, 1978 and last aired April 29, 1979 with 24 episode. It was later revived as Galactica 1980, which aired for 10 episodes from January 27 to May 4, 1980. The reason why the show got cancel was its high production cost which lead to it demise, so I heard the rumors. I wish the show had stayed running for decades because it is a fantastic sci-fi series show that, personally to me, it is the best spacefaring, soap opera, action, adventure, drama, suspense, thriller, romance, sci-fi film ever made in human history. Far better than Star Wars and any other films of its genre still to this day. What few people of other ethnicities (no one wanted to come here due to the civil unrest) there were tended to be in very lower socio-economic work. To see a Person of Colour in a high rank was an eye opener for me and in a positive way (I was around 9-10). @@battlestarcollectica7106 It is my understanding that there was to have been a major reduction in the cast for the second season, including Colonel Tigh. Sheba would have been killed off, and Athena would have been recast after sustaining serious injuries during a Cylon attack. Boomer would have been promoted to second in command, Apollo would have decided he'd rather not have any more responsibilities after Sheba's death, and would become more like Starbuck. Starbuck would be forced to take command of the Viper squadrons, and would become more serious and responsible.

Colonel Tigh was one of my favorite characters from the original show actually. Glad Terry Carter got the role.

He nailed the part! It would have been interesting to see him as Boomer but he was a perfect Colonial Tigh!

I never knew this - amazing how Fate plays out! Although it would have been interesting to see Terry as Lt. Boomer, I think his portrayal of Col. Tigh was amazing! A pity he recently passed - RIP.

I agree! He would have brought a very different take to Boomer.

I loved his Tigh. Tough, practical and not an impulsive cruel drunk who “executed” crewfolks behind the captains back.

More than likely, he was rollerskating when he broke his ankle and not rollerblading because rollarblades were an extremely niche product in the '70s where rollerskates were everywhere...!

I grew up watching this show every week. I loved that an African American was cast in that important leadership role. Col. Tigh became a role model. I also loved Lt. Boomer and I liked him as he was recast and was presented as a fellow pilot and warrior. I really liked Battlestar Galactica and I wish it could have been budgeted better and continued.

I think the last-minute change actually worked well, because instead of playing an older, seasoned pilot, Carter played an older, seasoned line officer. And honestly the show needed that, as while Adama was ostensibly the "commander" he was much more of a sage, father figure, and reluctant politician - very rarely an actual military figure. Carter brought that military aspect to the show and it made things a lot more believable. Like any good XO, he came off as more than a little bit of a hardass, but was a constant reminder that Galactica was very much a "Navy" ship and not just a vessel carrying Adama's family and friends.
