I love my gravity sawyer system. The bags I never cared for. I first replaced them with Evernew bags, and just recently moved to these... Cnoc Outdoors Vecto 2L Water Container. The whole top of the bag opens up for easier filling. I also use parts from a Platypus GravityWorks 4.0L Hose Kit , which allows me to shut the flow off when changing containers.

All good info; also relevant is the space savings over most dedicated gravity setups. Even if you're not carrying this on your back, you've still got to stow and keep the components clean and operational. These Sawyers can't be beat! Alas, I had to glean most of the details you point out, except for flow rate, from the pictographs on the packaging of the filter I recently picked up at Walmart.

Looks great ... only thing I noticed that would enhance it further would be a small on/off valve to put inline on the bottom that hose. I'll have to go look and see if they have one available as an accessory item. Thanks for the video, good job as always.

I've had mine for a year and never bothered to realize that's what the mesh bag was for, Ive been using it for a ridge line organizer on my hammock LOL! I usually just attach a smart water bottle to it and squeeze, I'll definitely be trying the gravity system out.

Excellent video! I'm not sure that I agree that altitude affects flow rate... The difference in gravitational force is negligible from sea level to the top of mount Everest lol. The only downside I see with this is that the filter breaks if it freezes which I guess is easy enough to avoid, but still. That and it doesn't filter viruses. Which makes me think that the steri-pen would be a good companion to this if you were in an area concerned with viral contamination. That, or just have a different filter.

With the Mini: put the hose between the Mini and the dirty bag and rest the Mini at the container. This improves flow; its called head pressure.

Hey man if you like that try hooking your Sawyer up to it 10L bag kit. That's what I call a game-changer when you don't have to go back to the Water Source in the morning. haveing your stored water for all of your Camp needs is so convenient. I will say in my experience the Sawyer bags are very hard to fill in stagnant water.

I use this all the time. Back when I bought mine it was 30 all day long at walmart. You can also adapt a funnel it's called a feed and seed that has the same threads, to make your bags rain collectors. Then when the bag fills up you gravity filter it like shown here. Awesome product.

I have the same filter. I connect the gravity feed the same way you do.....filter directly into the bag and blue adapter with hose on clean end of filter. But I don't know if u noticed but on the Sawyer package it shows the blue adapter on the bag with the hose from the blue adapter to the gray adapter which is connected to the dirty end of filter and the original white push spout is on the clean end of the filter. Not sure if it makes a difference or not. But my thinking in using the method you showed here which I use is that why get dirty water in the hose.

The altitude doesn't matter much. The local gravity coefficient is less than 1% lower at the top of Everest, so except for the terrifyingly low temperature trying to freeze your filter, the gravity filter will be running at over 99% of the low altitude rate. For efficiency, you want to get the bag as high above the filter as possible to maximize the pressure. So bag up high with a long hose down to the filter is the setup you want. That leaves the hose as a dirty item. So instead of the maybe 18 inches you had there, try a longer hose and put the bag 5 feet up. You should fill the bottle in about 40 seconds.

Objects weigh less at higher altitudes due to being further from the earths core. Gravity is relative to the distance from both objects center of mass.

It's cool that you can do that but why doesn't Sawyer market a carbon module that could be screwed onto the reg. filter? Bugs are not the only water contaminants in this world and it seems that Sawyer only wants to market to people who hike in pristine areas.

It seems that Sawyer water filtration products are very popular, especially among thru hikers, and generally seem to work well, but they are very basic filters, and they have issues in freezing weather. Lifestraw makes a product (that I own), called the LIfestraw Family, with a reservoir that you also suspend from a tree, with a higher filtration capacity than the original LIfestraw, or Sawyer, that will filter out viruses too. Since you seem to like head to head reviews, I would like to see you test and review some lesser known, or seemingly less publicized, but in my opinion probably better water filtration products than Sawyer. Those products are the Survivor Water Filter products from Survivor Filter... www.survivorfilter.com/ and the MUV Water Filter Line from Renovo... renovowater.com/muv.html Both of the aforementioned companies seem to manufacture products that have better filtration rates, (virus level) than Sawyer, as well as the capability to filter out contaminants like lead, arsenic, pesticides, chlorine, ammonia, which when removed improves the taste of the water, not to mention the protection of your health, Viruses, chemicals, and heavy metals are not removed by the Sawyer products. It seems that all of these water filtration products are priced similarly, so I would rather have the best filtering capabilities available.

Both companies offer higher levels of filtration for viruses and heavy metals. Sawyer does however win in filtration from their standard products which claim to remove down to 0.1 microns while Lifestraw only claims 0.2

As to virus, it depends on where you live. Generally, in developed countries water born virus is not an issue. The only exception that I can think of might be a heavily polluted river flowing through a large city with a large homeless population. (Potential problems have been noted in recent news reports.) I wouldn't use that water, if any other source were available, regardless of the commonly available filter being used. BTW, Sawyer does sell filters that removes virus. It is *wrong* to claim "Viruses,".... "are not removed by the Sawyer products." As to chemicals and such, first, I wouldn't use water from heavily polluted sources, if any other option is available. Secondly, in many areas in developed countries, this isn't an issue either. I live in a rural area in SE USA. There are many small streams and springs in my area that do not need carbon filter filtration. Further, there are options available to add activated charcoal filtration to Sawyer products, if desired. In closing, don't take my word for it. Research, yourself! Learn risk potential where you intend to use raw water based on credible sources. Locally, learn the best sources for raw water to be used for consumption. Learn what is actually needed, for those water sources, to make the water potable. In some instances, all that's needed is a clear soda bottle. (SODIS) For my areas of travel and likely travel, I don't need "the best filtering capabilities available". Which is probably reverse osmosis, desalination or distillation, depending on the situation.
@brimstone33

I have used the Sawyer extensively on the Appalachian Trail. It has become pervasive there, probably 80% or better of hikers use that filter now. First of all, don't buy the mini. Yes it's slightly more compact but it will frustrate you with the slow flow rate, especially if you are stopping enroute to filter rather than sitting around camp. Secondly the Sawyer bags SUCK. They WILL blow out if you "squeeze"(roll) them repeatedly. EVERYONE I met that used those bags experienced that. Go with Evernew bags, much better quality. Punch your own suspension line holes - and reinforce them with duck (not duct) tape. Make that suspension line long enough to use as a carry strap. Put a mini biner on one end to disconnect and go around limbs and trees. Ditch the Nalgene bottle. It's heavy and hard to drink from and awkward to carry and you will lose the lid. Those were adapted in the 70's for outdoor use from chemical laboratories because there were not wide mouth containers to use in subzero conditions where the water freezes quickly in the mouth of a narrow canteen making it impossible to drink. Unless you're headed for Mt. Everest go with something like a Smartwater bottle, which is light and free and easy to drink from. And with the Sawyer bottle adapter you can screw it directly onto the outflow end of the filter and suspend the whole thing from a tree limb. Don't form a seal by threading tightly or an airlock will form preventing flow. As a bonus you can backflush the filter with the Smartwater bottle and outflow adapter. I like the use of the mesh bag, didn't know that was what it's for.
