there's definitely some 'fake' points in nier's pressure that you can react to and mash on, but that basically just unlocks layer 2 where she can start cancelling into DP to frame trap, and even without that RPS she's just a really solid character who gets massive damage and guaranteed mix off of every hit.

I think she'll probably be a lot less insane once her damage is toned down and her chip damage is heavily nerfed. She can unload over 20% chip damage in a single blockstring and has the ability to full combo hitconfirm off pretty much anything. I started off playing Nier since she was new, but have been practicing Anila and Zooey now and it's made me realize the only real hard part of this game is hitconfirming off stray pokes into any sort of minor combo, which Nier never has to worry about really.

@@AJRobin-qi5vu Well her main mixups are strike/throw or the high/low auto combo or a reactable crossup you can use block button to block. Her mixups are mostly universal, the issue is that she gets full combos off them that nobody else can. If she does less damage, she'll need to use more puppet meter though and run out sooner. I hope her reversal gets gutted too though.

She backpacked my ass up to S++ before I switched to other characters. From my experience the wildest thing with her is how literally any hitconfirm, whether a jab, DP, or catching their toes with a 2M, all lead to guaranteed 4k+ dmg -> setup. Think she could be toned down, but I wonder how a nerf would affect her tier placement since other top chars like Seox and Lance already feel like rough matchups.

seox has a parry and its really fast, all nier players when the puppet is ready they will use a move to get a hit confirm, parry nier is easy. and then you have 3 seconds to do whatever you want agenst nier. Push her to the corner done, frame traps, easy. I find Seox being a good matchup agenst nier

Nier is a fantastic case study on why Arc Sys puppet fighters should never be simple to play. Complexity was all that kept the archetype reasonable, making it something even glue players can fully utilise is insane.

I feel you man, I really do. As someone who has a friend who not only mains Nier, but actually knows all her ins and outs, I wholeheartedly agree that she's a effin' nightmare to fight against. But know what? Vaseraga and Belial (both normal and the Avatar version) are good counter-picks against her. Or at least they've been for me. With Vaseraga you need to pressure her and not let her set the pace; not an easy task, but I've done with him many times against S-ranked Nier players. Belial (especially the Avatar version) can shut her down pretty good as well, but you need to know her tells to be able to react accordingly. His counter where he teleports above is a good tool to get close to her quick and sometimes even get a hit along the way. With Avatar Belial, you need to push her into the corner and start your nigh infinite combo by sacrificing your own health; not an easy task but doable. His most important tools are his teleports and the ability to extend his combos via his own health. Also, if you didn't know, what makes Nier's combos so damaging is that the game does not view the doll's hits as part of your combo-limit because the game views the doll as a projectile; so any combos the doll does do not add to the normally gradually decreasing damage of each hit you get when you extend your combo with any other character. And I've seen a lot of top tier players making videos about her - of how disgustingly easy she is to play, how varied her tool-set is, and how much frame-traps she can setup. She's disgusting to play with and play against; I rarely - if ever - take a rematch against her, ranked or casual. She's really, really unfun to play against. Hell, I just watched a Master ranker starting from scratch with her and pushing her from S-rank to Master rank in just two hours, while using only one combo - just to prove a point how disgustingly easy she is to use, even against other experienced players. The reason she's commonly set so high in the lists where they rank each character - I think - is a combination of her ease of use; the tools she has (which she has the most of the entire roster); and how forgiving her gameplay is and/or how difficult she is to punish for her mistakes. But that's just my opinion. I'm not an expert, but this commentary was based on my experiences and my views on the matter.

Something a bit sad about Nier is that some people genuinely just like to play her for the lore, design, gameplay, archetype, etc. and then getting free hate for playing said character is quite rough. I have always got a curse of whenever I choose my main for any of the reasons above they were kind of weak (mk9 cyber sub-zero) or flat out trash (release Faust in GG Strive) and I love mainly setup gameplay but in the end, the real curse is playing a top tier because people have a hard time acknowledging that some players are good with said characters. Talking about Strive, I think release Sol or even Ramlethal were more, wayyy more, contenders for "most stupid overtuned characters in a fighting game ever" and I played quite a lot of fighting games from capcom, to arcsys, then bandai namco.

Puppet characters are pretty much always strong in fighting games just because of the nature of the archetype. The only real difference with Nier is that she's accessible to use. You don't have to negative edge, or mind the Eddy meter, or manually position the puppet, or anything like that with Nier. Just press the special button + a direction to attack, and U to recall the puppet. Her combos have similar inputs to other people's combos, which mean more people can go crazy with this archetype. That's why she's so popular. It's rare to find a puppet character that's this accessible. I personally think it's a good thing. They've finally taken the puppet archetype from 4x sweatier than everyone else in the game, to about 1.5x sweatier. Once people get used to it, her popularity will decrease as everyone gravitates towards the actual OP characters... Seox and Zeta. Nier's got clear weaknesses: 1) Projectile zoning 2) ungaa bungaa psychos like Seox, Soriz, Zeta, etc 3) Using the block button, and then a reversal, on her chain attacks while she's in range (this causes her to waste stocks) instead of trying to reversal her first attack. 4) She wastes stocks on baited reversals... she doesn't get those for free. Right now, everyone fights against Nier the same way; They just run forward with 66L and start mashing their buttons. Then Nier hits a reversal into a big combo and they scream "WTF". If you bait the reversal (like you should do for everyone anyway), Nier has to start playing more carefully, because that kind of thing wastes her stocks. Yes, she can combo you for 50%... but that also costs 5+ stocks (of 13 total) to do. The fewer stocks she has, the less dangerous her offence becomes. You bait a reversal, or block a puppet hit and reversal out of the puppet's chain attack, maybe 1-2 times and you've made Nier waste literally half of her stocks without getting any damage. That's a bad situation for her. Nier has enough stocks to do 2 big combos per round. You interrupt those and she's in danger of running out of stocks (aka puppet attacks) before the round ends. And she becomes a LOT easier to fight against. Just my opinion.

agreed. people don't know how to deal with her right now. she's got some really strong shit. but she's also got some exploitable weaknesses. but thats how puppet characters are. when they get you in between themselves and the puppet, you're supposed to be screwed. you're getting 2 on 1ed. that's every puppet character I can think of. it's kind of funny that my man said he'd quit the game if nier doesn't get nerfed just because I quit the original GBVS over lowain. I flat out couldn't stand that iggy iggy iggy shit where he would become literally invincible for like 8 seconds and just rain hell on you and you had to basically QTE the shit or have the round stolen every time. I wouldn't even call Nier a real puppet character. She doesn't act anywhere the same as someone she was supposed to function as. (Think someone like Shadow Labrys). I'd say Death is just an extension of her move sets. In the same vein Relius is. The issues I have with Nier are pretty much: A: Midscreen Damage is way too high B: Reversal takes 1 stock. ONE STOCK. And it doesn't even go on CD. (Oh, but it's limited. While she gets stronger the less stocks she has. MMHM) C: Damaging the puppet doesn't keep it out of commission long enough IMO. If you're going to keep that damage, at least reward us for smacking Death away and making her more vulnerable. Knowing every single string where Nier can make something that was supposed to be negative, now plus is too much of a risk for just to try and mash really. One too many where everyone else is pretty straightforward in knowing what they can and cannot do. Those are my main gripes really.

@@Kuraudou I don't want to diminish your complaints. Nier is very strong. But I think her strength is kind of necessary in a way, in this game. I also play Ferry. And let me tell you, people just mindlessly rushing me down with 66L is nearly unbearable with her. With Nier, people think twice about that, or they eat a 50% damage combo mid screen and get caught up in my set play. I don't think Nier would need such a strong reversal (being able to combo off of it) if certain universal game mechanics (and just ungaa bungaa in general) weren't so strong in this game. I think Nier represents not only the shiny new, previously "gatekept" archetype... but higher level players are gravitating towards her because she's also the answer to some pretty wild universal game mechanics that can just be oppressive if you don't have a strong way to discourage, for example, the abuse of 66L. Consider this, if Nier gets nerfed into the dirt tomorrow, do you think this game would then be fair? Or would people then start complaining about Zeta, Seox, Soriz, etc who are already just as strong, if not stronger, than Nier? I think before individual characters are looked at, certain universal game mechanics need to be toned down. I'm no expert. That's just my 2 cents.

​@@2DFightergaming Everyone suffers to 66L. I play Vira. 66L is cancer. What do I get to fight it? My DP. That goes on CD. Or my BP so I can create space. Nier? Super Armor DP for the cost of 1 Card. INTO A COMBO. Nier doesn't NEED it. She doesn't have to even think about BP. If most of the cast has to deal with the same pressure to a degree, she doesn't need to be the exception when she already has plenty of damaging tools in her arsenal. Yes, the reason why people can skate over some of the other cast is because their tools aren't as oppressive. They can actually be handled and it actually takes some skill to work with(putting Seox aside). There's a reason why there's like 24-13 Masters between these two. It's their ease of access. Putting the characters aside, there are problems in the game's core mechanics. I know already. There's a lot that I hate about it. But it isn't the place to go off on it(Why even bother spot dodging moves sometimes if people can just mash L Auto Combo? HAH) Nerfing Nier isn't the solution to the overall game's fundamentals, but to at least bring SOME balance to what we currently have. It's like saying Kokonoe was fine upon release and that she needed her Blackhole loops to be relevant. When she had the most broken thing in her kit as a special. Control of your character's movement.

Characters who can parry her puppet makes it so easy, you have 3 seconds every parry to go in and mess her up. the moment she is on her back legs she has to fight to get neutral back. Yes she has the best mid screen combo and you will be blocking alot agenst her. As someone who likes to bully people on fighting games, I gotta say, I really don't care if there's stuff that makes the game unfun for people, and I would care even less if its easy to play so that everyone can do the same, what matters to me is if I can make people have no fun when they play with me, as i'm hearing she's not the best character right? she's consider one of the best but the fact that she's so easy to play that it hard carries people is the issue here, which I honestly don't see as a problem, because I played games where this happens to an even greater degree, for example, jigglypuff on melee, kirby on 64, pre patch diddy on smash 4, bayonetta on smash 4, petshop on jojo, but obviously he was without a doubt the best character in the game by a humoungus margin, bison on street 2, guile on 2, sagat on 2, easy as hell characters that really didn't took that much to play and hard carry people, super turbo is full of characters easy as hell to play that hard carry and the always thrive, I don't man, I can totally see this being an issue if she's the absolute best character in the game, because if I can pick it up and do worse to people then im all in for it, my main pleasure is to torture others for the sake of my own entertaiment.

Puppet characters should both not have armored reversal nor should they be able to convert the armored reversal they shouldn't have into 6k damage. The whole point of the character archetype is that they have strong desynced offense that's difficult to escape from, and that when they aren't set up they're weaker. At no point is she weak unless she recklessly burns through all of her charges on pressure. And honestly good luck surviving 13 chained specials worth of mixups. -She should lose half stacks if you hit Death. It's such a huge threat that you should be greatly rewarded for successfully challenging it. -More stacks should be consumed if she's converting them into damage -The armor needs to go, come out like frame 3 so its not usable on wakeup, or it cannot be canceled out of if it's the starting special in the chain. Take your pick or mix and match. -She should suffer a scaling penalty that continues to grow the more specials she chains. -She should die after running out of stacks. All reasonable and well thought out rebalances which were not in any way related to me matching up against multiple S+ Niers in casual matchmaking.

This character is an abomination of a design. Any starter from ANYWHERE on the screen is guaranted to be 40% minimum if you don't drop your combo. You get throw out of your EX Wake up DP? Doesn't matter the cooldown is refreshed you can do it again! Her dash L is godlike compared to the entire cast this shit goes so far it's not even funny. Low on doll ressources? Your SBA gets a massive, unscalled by combo damage buff that goes up to 1500 free damage. The character got unblockable setup that are safe from reversal / BP reversal. I don't know what the hell the devs were cooking with this character but she is over cooked.

I don't know Jiyuna personally I think having a "No I win" button whenever my opponent tries to pressure me greatly enhances my enjoyment of the video game actually it stopped being funny after 200 matches so I switched to other characters now until Nier gets nerfed and I have to relearn her, Soriz is pretty fun

I never rematch nier players. No idea what devs were thinking giving a character full corner damage midscreen that gives you dp safe oki on character that does more than average damage in general. Not to mention full side swap combo from hitting ex reversal being in corner.

I was really exicted for nier because i love puppet characters and i liked how she looked. It was only reinforced in the gameplay trailer because i like how she looks when she fights alone, which im not a fan of with others like carl, and her puppet doesnt look stupid, which sometimes seems to be difficult for devs to do. but this is insane. Shes so played that i wont even bother touching her. Ill wait for the inevitable nerfs, and i hope they gut her. THEN ill pick her up and learn. In the meantime, i'll be filled with disappointment as well as having a character crisis.

Just started ranking the other day and just hit S so maybe that’ll change. Played against one early on and a friend plays her, and I got shit on at first. I played against one that didn’t protect the puppet though and I went ham and destroyed them. I don’t know where all the Nier players hiding, but I barely match against one so I don’t know enough other than she seems strong.
