Honestly a GX85 or better yet a GX9 with a 20mm is the most powerful combo for not a whole lot of money. And there are little to no compromises, it does have a good EVF, tilt one, it does have amazing stabilization you can shoot up to 1 second hand held with this combo, it does have amazing video (though cropped by 1.2x) it does have a screen that’s better than anything from Sony even today, it can really be used in daylight, and it tilts, and while this combo has slower autofocus, this is the most precise autofocus you’ll ever use, trust me. It will never miss focus when it confirms green.
@robinwong4 ай бұрын
And how much does the GX85 and 20mm cost? I'd say, almost the same as GR IIIX. The point of this video, was to find an affordable alternative.

Not sure why all the manufacturers give up on the small lightweight camera market segment. Sony has not had a camera that is as small as the Nex series for years and Panasonic has not refreshed the GM / GF lines. I feel there is still a market for that.

I agree. Even professionals want a small camera for personal use/work. Nobody really loves taken photos with their phones lol. We need good compact cameras.
@Durio_zibethinus4 ай бұрын
Poor at segmentation marketing and software development. You've to realise how stubborn Japanese companies in this regard. Panasonic took a long time that phase detection didn't hurt image quality, their GH6 even worse at that. G100 is a fine camera, but they launched it poorly without knowing what vlogger is. Sony famously had bad UI across their products. Their read/write speed also used to be abysmal. My guess is they just depends on hype buy and influencers without knowing what to do 😅
@ssoqboss4 ай бұрын
It just makes no sense because lenses are still big and bulky. Since you can't put it in your pocket there is no point to make body like compact. Even in this video, this setup doesn't match with Ricoh GR3 indeed. You can't put it in your jeans or shirt pocket so it's immediately disqualified from competition.

I think the problem is that the dedicated camera segment is shrinking and smaller cameras would dictate a lower price but manufacturers would rather make pricier cameras.

I recently bought one used to make use of the manual TT Artisan lenses. Unfortunately, the main dial had issues with the contacts. The labeling would be off and didn’t align with set mode. It would then change modes on its own. I could have maybe got it serviced or cleaned but i thought it best to return it as it could have been a world of pain. I really did love the camera though. Just that it is a an older cam and obviously subject to issues of this sort. I did then find an A6300, a little newer that fulfilled the need. The sensors in most of the Sony Apsc cameras are very similar though.

Nice video as always, Robin "Let's do this...." 🙂 Nowadays, the NEX-6 (2012) costs around 170-220 EUR, depending onto the condition - and the TTA 27/2.8 is also around ~130-180 EUR, depending onto the store - *BUT* i have to tell you something - the 27/2.8 TTA isn't quite as good, as the 7Artisans 27/2.8 AF seriously - i can tell you, because i have both lenses. 😀 I'd always consider the 7Artisans 27/2.8 AF for the Sony, or any other Sony APS-C NEX/A6x00, because the TTA 27/2.8 AF isn't this great. Both are being firmware-upgradeable. Last, but not least - the 7Artisans 27/2.8 AF matches the Sony body design much better, and could being found only for as low as 109 EUR, instead, the TTA 27/2.8 AF is optically worse, and at least some 30-50 bucks more expensive, usually. I'd say, the TTA 27/2.8 AF is much better suited onto a Fujifilm body, from design. The 7Artisans 27/2.8 AF is better onto the Sony, albeit the lens is a bit bigger, and needs a lens hood, like the TTA lens also. Hint: Nikon's 40/F2 Z mount lens hood as 3rd party hood is 1) really cheap 2) fits perfectly the design from the 7A 27/2.8 AF lens.

@@robinwong It is sad that Samsung decided to leave camera market. They created one mighty APS-C sensor back in 2008 that was introduced in Pentax K20D at that time which was my first DSLR :) It was 14.6Mpix CMOS with Live-view. As processors evolved that sensor was later used in Pentax K-7 (added full video support) and in several Samsung cameras released years later. When K20D was introduced, it was APS-C camera with largest resolution, Canon had EOS 40D with 10Mpix and Nikon had D80 also with 10Mpix. Only FF Canon 1D line had 14Mpix at that time! Then later of course Canon introduced EOS 50D with 15Mpix and Nikon introduced D90 and D300 both with 12Mpix CMOS and also Live-view. Samsung also created mighty 28Mpix APS-C CMOS that had highest resolution until much later Canon EOS 90D was introduced. And Samsung NX1 was a beast in more areas. Their hybrid AF system was very advanced. That thing also had 15 FPS @ 28 Mpix back in 2015! and 4K video. Of course sealed body with tilting LCD and WiFi. It is still quite capable when compared to many modern cameras today.. If Samsung was still around, the would probably rival Fuji with resolution now and provide some healthy competition for Sony sensors. Also their AF was brutal even 9 years ago. Imagine what they could have used nowdays.. But NX system had one issue - no IBIS. Which was strange, because before NX system they used Pentax clone DSLR cameras that obviously had IBIS like GX10 and GX20.

Casio ex-z750 for size; I don't always want a zoom lens to slow startup though. G85 for unlimited video time. Z6 for autofocus in a fullframe. Em5 and em5 mkii for because I got a good deal. I believe that even the smaller / older model NEX-5N (inherited from my late dad a decade ago) could be considered too. Sure enough image quality is no competition with today's camera, but if the destination of your taken images is your social account it is more than adequate. (99% of images taken will ONLY be viewed on cellphone/tablet screen, let's face it.😆) No evf of course but you get even smaller form factor. Hence for point&shoot / street photography this still counts. Personally, when added with its sentimental value this little camera will stay with me till the last day - for sure.

Great cam, but you can't put this cam + lens in your jeans pocket.

That is also a good alternative, as mentioned in this video.

I have,had lots of m43 cameras , I bought a sony a6000 with a 16-50 pancake and 50mm f1.8 as a kit second hand and was very impressed with it, it takes better photos than any of my m43 cameras and is fairly compact as well
@robinwong4 ай бұрын
The pancake kit lens is quite a poor performer, and the 50mm F1.8 isn't anything to write home about. Any dedicated Micro Four Thirds lens can smoke them two no contest.

The GR & x100 are just cult cameras for clueless photographs who want to jump on a bandwagon. So many better options like this, also consider the 5100 with 24MP sensor - smaller, lighter but no EVF.
@robinwong4 ай бұрын
The GR and X100 are excellent cameras, if you can afford them. If you can't, there are cheaper alternatives too

Get it right in camera, and do minor post-processing.

Another (perhaps easier) alternative is the a6000 (whichI've seen for as low as about $250, but that's the body only). But it will work with all modern E-mount lenses as a result (the NEX I'm not sure if it's completely compatible with all modern E lenses or not).
@robinwong4 ай бұрын
A6000 costs about USD500 here in Malaysia used, body only. Pairing it a lens would make that USD600, not exactly a budget option anymore.

But there is not really a need, is there? Can't think of a situation where going below 1/60th is really necessary for the purposes of this setup.

I usually shoot with a Fuji XT30 which is pretty compact. I bought the pancake lens but even then it wasn't what I would deem as pocketable. Thought about my use case and re-bought my old Lumix LX10/15 - which I love. Although, the 1inch sensor maybe scoffed at by some, that doesn't effect it's day time use and it's f1.4 with outstanding results. For evening where you can afford to be less candid, I love my FujiFilm 35mm f1.4 lens. I was put off by the lack of tilt on the GRIII and it's f2.8

The Fuji XT30 is a winner. It just isn’t as small and cheap as the Sony Nex6. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

@@martingreenberg870 I wasn’t talking about the XT30, that isn’t my choice to go against a GRIII. I love my XT30 but as a pocketable daily carry, I bought a Lumix LX10 which is tiny and f1.4. Image quality is outstanding. The drawback is at night, but I have my XT30 and 35mm f1.4 for that and you don’t have to be as candid at night

Both the Fuji and Lumix options cost a lot more than the old budget Sony though!
@LDN_BOX4 ай бұрын
@@robinwong I paid £280 for the LX10 on eBay with two leather cases and three original batteries in MInt condition. You can likely find it even cheaper! I bet the Sony plus a lens comes in for more! In addition, I bet the Sony and lens isn’t pocketable which is the whole point of the GRIII and my LX10 choice
