In my opinion: Minor 7th chords sound less mean because it contains a major triad. It's even a triad in respect to the chord of the 3rd degree of the minor scale of the chord that was used (e.g. Cm7 has C, Eb, G, Bb; remove C, and get the chord of the 3rd degree of C Minor, which is Eb).
@ElJumper532 ай бұрын
Yeah, to me on major scales it feels way better to resolve on a minor seventh sixth degree than a maj7 first degree

True. Minor 7ths are also just so incredibly stable sounding because of the spacing between all the intervals. There's so little dissonance to be found between all the different notes in a minor 7th chord and that makes it the most resolved sounding 7th chord to my ears, strangely even more so than a triad. I guess if I had to describe it in one word it would be 'satisfying'. I wonder if this is why they often work so well in funk music - music that's supposed to make you feel good.

here's one way of thinking about the reason why synthet identifies that minor 7 chords make minor "sound less mean": minor seven chords are also major chords with a major 6th added in if you think about it. example: C Eb G Bb is the root voicing of c minor 7 revoicing this with the C at the top: Eb G Bb C is the root voicing of Eb maj 6 the "chameleon" nature of this chord depending on context, voicing, and harmonic function, is part of what makes it sound somewhere in between major and minor. it's "major but dissonant", and also "minor with a major stacked on top".
@JazzyFizzleDrummers2 ай бұрын
I mean, that can be said of any extended harmony. That is, you can respell any four note voicing as a triad slash voicing, and further extensions as polychords. It's actually a pretty fun way to reharmonize. Just strip the voicing down to a triad and give it a bass note that isn't part of the triad
@Sedyon2 ай бұрын
I don't think it's dissonant, but it creates more colour and also more tension, especially in the case of a ii-V-I; a minor seven chord isn't as stable as a normal minor chord but I like the way it sounds - richer and smoother.

You can't have ♭11 or #13 in a dom7 chord ☝🤓G#7 = G#, B#, D#, F#. The ♮11th would be C#, so if we flatten it then it's just C. But C is the same note as B#, which is the third. The 13th = F, so #13 would be F# which is the ♭7.
