In search of food in Sarawak? Let me give you a tiny hint. If the stall has Chinese characters in it, it's usually non-Halal. If the stall has Malay words, it's usually Halal.

Thankyou for sharing another amazing video of miri. 25th dec,2023 today people are celebrating christmas in the city, so town area not so many pples around, because some pples going back to their village, or going out station to other places visiting. Some pple don’t respond when you talk to them because they don’t understand what you said, it is not because they are not friendly. The place you had been visited was miri town centre, there are many other places you not yet visit, like niah cave national park, world heritage.

7:10 DBstory is one of Malaysia's influencers. That painting is that of Niah Cave. It's about an hour's drive from Miri. 9:28 No, it's NOT because of Chinese influence. Sarawak is a non-Muslim majority State and Dayak ethnics are the majority. We're mostly non-Muslims therefore we eat pork. That is why you see less halal shops as compare to the peninsula. Chinese are concentrated in towns and cities, that is why you see more of them there. 10:29 To them you're invading their privacy. So, please ask if a shop owner is okay with you taking videos of their businesses/shops/merchandise because not everyone is okay with it. Ah. You tried Coffee Code! What I know about them is that they try to source their beans from locals. Not all of their beans, I believe.

Thanks for coming to Miri Myer, for your info, yes Sarawak does have alot of chinese influence, but the majority of the people here consists of a race called Iban, an indigenous group in Sarawak. We are very much different from West Malaysia, so as you can see, there are many non-halal food coffee shops, markets, so it's best for you to do some research or ask a local, or a friend who have been to Miri before you step into the markets and realising ohh there is pork sold everywhere. There are so many shops which serve halal food, mostly Malay restaurants. The stalls at the market which you walked away from are where i have meals occasionally, and the vendors, they do not talk much as they are business oriented, they just do their daily routine and tourists rarely visit markets.

Somehow, im kinda sensing some disconnect in the chat up attempts. Maybe (highly probable) because you look Indian ethically, and the Chinese locals automatically assume you are an Indian ethnic from Peninsular side (KL) of Malaysia. Thus, when you asked the food vendors about chicken or pork stuff, there was some ambiguos moments/hessitant answers - since a local would have known these and even avoid the foodcourt (if they know the primary food specialities available at the foodcourt). Pretty sure things would have been different if they know you're a traveller from America.

I also think he was quite rude with how he approached these folks: initiating conversation with people not looking in his direction, asking about their personal business, asking needless open-ended questions, initiating conversations in English despite repeatedly telling viewers he believes the language is not widely spoken there, asking if he could pay *after* eating, prolonging intrusive conversation with the obviously-offended "watchmakers", intruding on people's businesses then walking out of because they were "too expensive" (despite making $$$ on KZbin), etc. Meanwhile, his full beard and his "outsider" ethnic origin likely didn't help things. All in all, this person seemed to have little or no "situational awareness" or interest in fitting in.

1:05 this is a Chinese temple we called “tuah pek gong”. The temple will close 6pm every day. Since the oil boom of Miri in the early 1900s, the town population increased rapidly before an unknown epidemic began to struck the town which resulting to the deaths of many of the town population.[1][3] The local Chinese residents believed the epidemic is caused by evil spirits roaming around the area with a Chinese man named Chan Chak began to calling a monk to appease the spirits with spirit-pacifying ritual being carried out near the Miri River with an altar being placed there.[3] With the epidemic began to subsided following the ritual, the local Chinese residents constructed a temple near the river to revere Tua Pek Kong as a gratitude to the latter in 1913.[1] The temple stays until this day where it survived the Japanese bombings on the town during World War II. It was renovated in 1977.[3] In 2017, a new paifang has been constructed for the temple.[4]

More recent studies published in 2006 have shown evidence of the first human activity at the Niah caves from ca. 46,000 to 34,000 years ago.
