Amelia & JP: I've been watching your videos for a couple of years now. I enjoy visiting the various towns in Ecuador. Loja was especially pretty. I'm 70 years old and have a hard time getting around but like to travel. It is a pleasure to be able to join you on your journeys. I feel like I know you personally. Through you I'm getting to know Ecuador too. Thanks again for all you do. I even like Indian food and try to live a vegan life. Like JP, I have a hard time with elevations. A few years ago when we visited Flagstaff, Az (7,000 ft) I felt like a cat was sitting on my chest most of the time. Thanks again and I'll continue to enjoy your videos.

I visited Loja in 2015 with my then 10-year old son. He brought his skateboard and enjoyed the largest skatepark that we’ve found in our travels through 16 countries (in Parque Jipiro). Lojanas are SO friendly! My son sat in the violin section during one of the symphony rehearsals, and we found the most delicious tea- it’s called “horchata,” but its not the Mexican rice drink; it’s a special blend of flowers. When we were there we saw only one other “obvious” expat family, but that may have changed now. So happy to see you post this video.

Loja is extraordinary - I so love the restaurant with the magic realist paintings of the older women. Yay crones! Appreciating older women is an indicator of a healthy society. Just looks so alluring. Thanks Amelia and JP for this great introduction to this beautiful place.

Based on this video and compared to living in Cuenca, the buildings look to be in better repair and have a fresher look in Loja. Exteriors are more brightly painted and cleaner. Walkways and streets look to be much easier to walk. In Cuenca, you have to train yourself to watch where you walk. I was very impressed with El Centro Loja from what I saw in this video. I hope you can give more comparative analysis based on the many places you have visited and lived over the last 5 years. Thank You!

I live in Germany and with my Husband we are thinking about buying something for our retirement and altough I am from Quito I want to buy something in place with all commodities but not so expensive and chaotic like Quito/Guayaquil. The coast (Manabi) is where I wanted but my husband thinks, it is better a place that is not too hot. Your video opened my mind and Loja is a really good option. The only thing that I don' t like that much is that it is far away from Quito but I guess it is worth it.

Thanks for sharing. I was just in Ecuador for a month, and had planned to visit the Andean cities of Loja and Cuenca, but it wasn’t possible due to the Paro Nacional strikes which blocked the roads from the coastal region, where I was, to the mountains. In lieu of that, I’m enjoying your video with a steaming cup of Loja coffee at home in the USA (Cafecom brand: good stuff!) Next year, I’ll make it to Loja, and I have been advised to check out the music scene there, since some have referred to Loja as the City Of Music. Next time!

Lojanos are special. They are fiercely loyal to their city and very proud of the improvements that they have made there, while keeping its’ historic past intact. They still curse the alcalde who paved over their cobblestone streets many years ago. Glad to see you went to the Mercado San Francisco where, in my opinion, the finest selection of cooked, ready-to-eat traditional Ecuadorian food can be found. One thing you mentioned that caught my attention-the turbulence. I travelled to Ecuador over the years with my job and noticed that was always an issue when flying between cities! Those mountains create drafts and I did NOT likely traveling on airplanes between cities in those two countries!

I hope to get back to Cuenca this year and live there for 6 months and home in California for 6 months. I had no idea that Loja was like this. Mr Rock chalk, thanks for sharing Loja with your lovely lady. At 6,800 feet was it easier to get around than Quito or Cuenca or did you miss the small hills of Manta. I found the curvy road to Zamora interesting about 10 years ago. Look forward to your other videos on the area. Thanks for all you do to educate us about life in different places in Ecuador.

In 2014 Ecuador gave a grant to all of the major cities to do three things - underground their electric wires and systems, put street names up throughout the city, and build a supplemental energy system to support their area through energy droughts. Loja took the money and did the work. No nests of power lines, street names everywhere, and the wind turbines happily spinning on the mountain tops. Cuenca also took the money and did nothing - now Cuenca pays a $12,000 per month "fine" on the money taken until the work is done. I love Loja. It's not perfect by any means but it's getting better every time I visit.
