That is indeed one of the unplayable mu for Japan. You only win if you can catch Russia off guard and get a very good fight. I tried doing that with the flanking idea, but it was very poorly executed. Def had a good opportunity there. And I forgot to send shrines twice for some reason, haha. Shipping it only once is almost a death sentence; you will have no eco. (Btw, 300f is one of the worst Japan bo, but you can achieve greatness if used on the right circumstance.)

i know exactly how michael felt here, in this tempo meta you have to try your hardest to outplay the falconets and deathballs to win, but when you get matched with haude, worse lakota or god forbid russia, you are essentially a death row inmate waiting for his execution. It is utterly impossible to win age2 vs a good standard russia with rekrut, strelets swarming your weak eco coupled with expensive units. If you dont do 300f he can just perma idle with infinite strelet spam it's ridiculous. A saving grace would be to revert shrine gathering to DE release level or make the heavenly kami card improve base gather rate more so you can get the payback at least in a reasonable time to retaliate!

I don't play high ELO (1200 ish), but I really enjoy playing Russia, I can give a few of my thoughts. - the high amount of Wood in Age 2 was because of the Quartermaster age-up (you can see the 4 cords of Wood at the TC at 4:45), probably the most versatile option for age 2, as you need tons of wood for houses, blockhouses/stables and Strelet mass. - New Order Regiments is easily one of my favorite Shipments for Russia. It basically cuts the stats penalty of your infantry in half (to -10% instead of -20%), it feels like an Age 3 shipment available in Age 2. - Age 3 timing is usually after sending most of your useful age 2 shipments (Cossacks, Strelets, NOR, Wood,...). Maybe nowadays you want it a bit quicker because of the two double blockhouse shipments for powerful map control

Japan need a good age one card. Shrines should bring in more resources, equal to British manor/torps/kancha. Probably more could be done, but those two would be a start

Nice cast! I think you were spot on why Japan is so weak. Their early game is so weak, by far the worst off al civs. Besides they got so many terrible match ups: Russia, Otto or any ff civ with falcs. Your only change to win (when being rushed) is to play absolutely perfect while your opponent is allowed to make mistakes and still win. Their cav units are just shit. Nagis are way overpriced for their stats, but the problem is you still need them some times. Yabusame only good against artillery, but also expensive and most off the time you just have to sacrifice them to snipe artillery, which also feels bad. Japan has no solid age 1 card, i mean 300 food, come on? Shrines are absolute shit, not to mention they can easely be taken down with 1 batch off units. Flame arrows are also the worst artillery in game. IF you manage to survive the first 10 mins with Japan (or opponent lets you) they are pretty solid and its a fair match.

Japan is the worst civ for sure. At similar players' skills, it simply cannot compete early game. It's the worst civ in early game, slightly above average in mid game (if not rushed in early game), and below average late game. Interestingly, as if this wasn't enough, it also has the worst shipments in the game, the worst explorers in the game (hence the poof ability, because japan explorers have to run away when they encounter any other explorers lol), and worst military units value (we could see an example here with its expensive yet weak cav).

If Sweden is allowed to reach Age 3 with decent Torp mass, they get a huge power spike: Platoon fire-Snaplock-Arsenal Upgraded Caroleans, early Infantry Guns, (Salvolax) Jaegers, the Pike-to-Gustavian Guard strat, Hakkapellits coming online,...
