I'm pretty much an antique myself, so I can remember "Sitting up with the dead." This was a normal practice in the southern mountain states of the U.S. Usually there was a viewing the morning after the death, where the coffin was open for last visitation. Then the coffin was closed, but not secured, and taken to the home of the deceased, where it was placed in the parlour on a table, or chairs, still unopened. Family members circulated in and out for most of the night, usually in diminishing numbers. However, even through the wee hours, one or two remained near the coffin, drinking strong black coffee and conversing in low tones or just in common silence. Most internments occurred between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, giving family and friends time to gather. The lid was then removed, and those present could file by, as if in silent agreement that the person really and truly was dead, dead, dead. As a final act of solidarity, or responsibility, or blame, family members and close friends would "pass the shovel", where each would throw Earth onto the coffin symbolically sending them on their final voyage. So for my fellow trivia lovers, this a glimpse into death in rural America in the first half of the 20th Century. This was how the living attempted to handle a problem they didn't want to openly discuss. And personally, it sounds a lot better than becoming a mini toxic waste dump. Humanity is being degraded by our infatuation with efficiency.

Makes perfect sense. In USA, there is NO requirement for embalming, so long as burial or cremation happens within a short time frame. Otherwise, refrigeration or embalming IS required. Laws vary by state.

I noticed two things. 1, I knew I was dying but my oxygen starved brain wasn't bothered by the thought. 2, I lost control of my body. I could actually "feel" the feeling in my body slowly ebb away. My heart slowed to around 20 beats a minute, it was faint and thready, and my blood oxygen stats were about 55%, my body was stone cold - all signs of impending death. 5 units of packed red cells later and I was on the mend, but I still have strange dreams about the feeling of dying.

Definition of "Phobia" - A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous. I don't think the fear of being buried alive should be listed as a 'phobia'. There is nothing irrational about being afraid of being buried alive since it has to be one of the worst ways to die, easily top 5, so being afraid of it isn't irrational at all. Would we label a person fighting in the middle of World War 2 a Hoplophobic(fear of weapons)? I guess with modern medicine it's a bit irrational to assume that doctors would mistake you for being dead when you're still alive(although it does still rarely happen), but hundreds of years ago it happened far more often than the average person would be comfortable with. I'm just saying that it's a bit silly to claim people had Taphophobia 200 years ago.

Hope u don't mind me sharing✌️ Here in my home country, the most common practice of burial is through storage of coffins inside another container made of cement that is planted onto the ground. After the coffin is securely stored, the container would then be sealed completely. The burial underneath the ground is exclusive only to some cemeteries here. But the most common was the former that i mentioned. In case someone is still miraculously alive, regardless whether an escapable coffin or not, no one is getting out once the coffin has been sealed inside.

The channel: Faces of the Forgotten there is a video that shows a spot in a graveyard where above tombs were built. They were like little subs and there was a way to open the tomb from within like you would open a sub door, you twist the round metal handle. There was even alittle food/water placed inside. No one that they know of ever popped out but thinking about it, would they have thought about the coffens? Like how if at all would they get out of their coffens? There's very little room inside the concrete tomb, probably no vents for outside freash air, lighting? 'IF' they could get the lid opened would it clear the ceiling? You'd think they'd be pretty freaked out don't you think?

Reasons why the fear of being buried alive was a completely rational thing once upon a time. It's less rational now, at least so far as medical science is concerned, but I can understand how that would be terrifying.
@NotSoCrazyNinja3 жыл бұрын
It is presumed to be less rational as it is assumed modern doctors are better at telling if someone is dead or not. However, I bet people still get buried alive or embalmed alive, or even cremated alive.
@Ahalaya3 жыл бұрын
@@NotSoCrazyNinja Well, the sheer percentage is what makes it less rational, at least in many parts of the world. Most places with modern medical technology will drop the chances drastically, but in places without those advancements, the chances would be higher. The fact that hospitals will do everything in their power to try to save your life (unless you have a Do Not Resuscitate order, which is your own choice ahead of time) also adds to the certainty of declaring death.
@NotSoCrazyNinja3 жыл бұрын
@@Ahalaya I could be totally wrong, but I do suspect that death is not as simple as most assume and that the cliff that one has to go over to actually be "dead" might be farther away than most assume. This is why my last wishes (if I can't get myself out into remote nature to let nature reclaim me) is to leave me at room temperature until there are definitive signs of rot. If there are no signs within 48 hours, it should be looked into further.
@Ahalaya3 жыл бұрын
@@NotSoCrazyNinja Oh, no. You're right. Death is more complicated than it seems. However, medical procedure and technology have advanced to a point where they check every possible metric. Then there are things like being brain dead, where the majority of the body still functions but th person as you know them is gone. I'm not in medicine myself, but both of my parents were until very recently, so I've heard about a lot of this from them. I won't say someone is necessarily wrong to have that fear, but they should know it is drastically less likely now than in the past.
@NotSoCrazyNinja3 жыл бұрын
@@Ahalaya The chances are a lot lower now than in the past, for sure, but I bet it is still more common than people want to think. If only one in a million are pronounced dead then comes back alive, that is still over fifty people a year worldwide. If the chances are one in ten thousand, that would be over 5,000 people a year buried alive. Of course, it's never as simple as that with real vs estimates. The reality is unknown because we don't really know how many people are buried alive as we don't typically dig people up very often and when we do, it's usually after an extensive amount of decomposition has occurred meaning there would be little to no signs that the person was buried alive unless their skeleton was face down and someone happens to note it. I view it kind of like simply living. Living is dangerous. However, one should not fear living because it is dangerous or due to there being pretty good odds of getting hurt or killed but should proceed with reasonable caution.

Work on your bench press, everyone. You don't want to not be able to press that 6 feet of dirt up
@NotSoCrazyNinja3 жыл бұрын
You're not going to press that six feet of dirt up. IF you are lucky and not buried with a massive concrete slab above your coffin, you might can claw and dig your way out but even that is unlikely due to lack of oxygen. You are totally doomed if you wake up after being buried today unless you do something to allow you to communicate with those above ground and have a fresh air supply and probably fresh water since it could take some time to get you out.
@nvmffs3 жыл бұрын
@@NotSoCrazyNinja Why do you think you can't press that six feet of dirt up? It's not as heavy as you might think. Especially if you're only pressing against head section of the lid of a split-couch casket. As for the risk of suffocation - that depends on a lot of factors, the most important of which would be the casket quality. If you're lucky enough to be from a poor family then you could easily last even a couple of days in there (not an arbitrary number, I've heard of actual stories mentioning that ballpark).
@NotSoCrazyNinja3 жыл бұрын
@@nvmffs The weight of the soil above a casket is around a thousand pounds depending on soil composition and water content.
@nvmffs3 жыл бұрын
@@NotSoCrazyNinja Yes, the whole weight could be. Even upwards of 2400 pounds. Still, this is a life and dead situation we're talking about and people have been known to easily break world records in such dire circumstances. Besides, I was talking about the head section of the lid of a split-couch casket. That would limit the weight of the soil to be pressed up to half or less (depending on the casket).
@NotSoCrazyNinja3 жыл бұрын
@@nvmffs I still say it's just better to let the possibly dead to "ripen" a few days until they get the pungent aroma of death, then throw them in the hole. Easiest way to tell if someone is actually dead, let them rot a little before throwing them in the hole.
