This Coimbatore Home is Inspired by Dravidian, Chettinad and Colonial Design Styles (Home Tour).

Located in a gated community in Coimbatore, this home was built by the architect as her residence. The existing villa on the site was brought down to give shape to this house heavily inspired by her memories.
Be it the traditional South Indian elements of temple architecture, her own Chettinad style ancestral house or the British Colonial design elements reminiscent of her school days, the architect has seamlessly blended all three design styles to bring this home together that compliments her lifestyle.
With elegant and bespoke interiors elements and a strong appreciation for art and artists, this house is a treasure trove of artifacts, furniture pieces, design stories and inspirations.

Climate responsive techniques, adequate access to natural light and ventilation, local art and craftsmanship and a harmonious design syntax are some key highlights of the project. Not really. Architecture is 99% engineering. The artistry here comes from the woodwork and the glass art pieces and the carvings which are the work of non-architects. The artistry of a house has 99% to do with your budget and only 1% to do with the architect.

​​@@Kids11111 what you say is partially true. But we should not forget the idea to put everything together were of the architects. Sourcing the artisians,the teak pillars ,the Burma doors etc etc. If it was not for them it would have been a much more tedious job co- ordinating everything not only plan wise. But execution too. Everyone did give their contributions. Yes. But one of the Main Reason the artisians got opportunity to work on the home because it was the part of architects vision. Certain placements if not done as it was done would not have given this effect.

Blend of old and new new very flawlessly done. Very nice architecture. Nothing overdone. Very classy features not just the new stuff in the market used for interiors. I think this is because the owner who in this case is the architect herself was involved in making sure that every detail is given proper attention. Like the colour combination. Also love the partition between the hall and the dining room. Also the house does connect the nature / outdoor with the indoors without overdoing it and making sure that while occupants enjoy the elements they don’t affect the structure in a negative way.

What a beautiful home. I cannot remember if any home video has left a mark on my memory, this one surely will. Smart and scientific use of steps, columns, directions, nature and natural elements. The beauty of artisans bringing in handmade, ethnic, traditional art vis a vis modern line and foliage art. Beauty of how the dark wood merges effortlessly with light wood and also the small window which is a little honey coloured wood. Then the cane which is lighter and maintaining a balance in style and theme. Loved the Kolam House

I must say this is one of the nicest houses I have seen in Indian architecture. It is not overcrowded and cluttered the and the elements are very minimalistic. The artwork is thoughtful and each piece compliments the style of the architecture. I agree with the designer that natural light is important, which is a departure from many homes historically in South India that have always been dark and gloomy with small windows or limited windows. Good job.

I gasped when I saw the first shot of the living room. The interiors really respect and complement of the scale of the space - it's easy to fill it with too much or too little. I love the contrast between the full height swivel panels (genius!) and the low furniture. It just works. Breathtaking.

Hello Mam.I literally fell in love with the fusion of contemporary and modern look of your house.I am a resident of Kakinada.I felt extremely happy when you quoted that some antique wooden pillar was restored in this new house ,shifted from an ancestral home in Kakinada.That shows how much respect you have towards your ancestral home.Your aesthetic sense is clearly evident in every aspect be it furniture or paintings.All the vintage collection is very beautiful - The Long pendulum wooden wall clock,the frame , painting of Lord Sri Krishna.I tremendously fell in love with the Window seat in the master bedroom.God bless your family with lots of joy.Kudos to the architects for an exemplary architectural design.

I am from Kerala too but having travelled all over India as my father was in the armed forces. My passion is studying various types of design concepts used in a home. Though each state has its own charm based on the terrain, tropics and climate, somehow found Kerala homes and Chettinadu architecture very soothing, deep culture oriented and a blend of true Indian designs. Really loved your beautiful home. I also dabble in bit of designs for friends. I have also designed a mix of Kerala and Chettinadu for my home. The glass barricade in the dining area is beautiful. I had designed something similar for a friend with her mothers embroidered sari sandwitched between the glass. ❤️

Always liked the traditiinal design elements, but in modern times sometimes traditional houses are not efficient and functional according to modern living. But this fusion design feels refereshing, it doesn't feel forced with modernism and traditionalism design. It is just PRETTY, temple column drawing on glass is most beatiful idea i've seen.
