In this episode of heartbeats, Lissa Ingram has suffered with fibroids on her uterus surgery for years. These are benign tissue growths that can be painful. They could be preventing Lisa from having children. She's already had two miscarriages.

Being induced is very painful. You start contractions with no breaks in between. I refused anything for pain, including an epidural, because it had taken me 10 years to get pregnant and I was taking absolutely no chances. There have been babies whose heart rate dropped after pain control, my niece being one. I promise right after the cord was cut I asked for pain meds.

I was induced and I didn’t find it bad, but each woman is different. Epidurals rock though.

Why the heck are they feeding their newborn from a medicine cup?!

Clue, it's called Cup Feeding.!!! Used when baby will not yet latch on to the breast or suck , to feed baby expressed breast milk ,or formula if that's mum's choice. Babies with low sugars are sleepy and sometimes don't want to feed, or struggle to suck immediately post delivery ,sometimes for a few days. This is used as a better alternative to Naso gastric tube feeding , it's a much lesser medical intervention where baby has not yet developed a fully efficient sucking reflex. The baby 'laps' at the milk from a cup, which is held at the bottom lip and gently tipped to allow baby to use their tongue to sip in the same way a kitten feeds from a dish. It's the closest feeding reflex to imitate the breast feeding 'suck' , and means the baby is not given a bottle with a teat to feed, as this is a different feeding mechanism which some midwives think will stop babies breast feeding. (it's not just poured down the throat!!) If babies cannot cup feed, and many cannot or don't want to, Naso-gastric feeds are needed until baby can breast feed or bottle feed Note, I worked in Midwifery and Neonatal care for over 30 years and that belief is rubbish!! Babies very successfully feed from the breast even if they've previously sucked on a teat!!! Hope this helps!

@@jacqueline8559 I just saw your post now. That’s interesting info. I was a breastfeeding Mom (loved it), and knew a lot about it ,but this is something I’ve never heard about before- cup feeding. Latch can be tough to learn at first for sure. Thanks for the info.
