When the stone gets loaded, just use one of those white "hi-poly" (hi polymer) erasers. Pentel makes a really good one, and they're cheap, about $2 to $3 each. They often come in 3-packs at about $5 to $6. When stone loaded, just ease it like you would with pencil marks, with fairly firm pressure. It removes darn near all of the steel dust, even if deeply imbedded. I've NEVER had a ceramic stone get so loaded that it's nearly unusable. The erasers clean them really well.

If you know someone who is in the building trades, just ask them for any old part used tubes of silicon rubber they have lying about, take off the nozzle and leave them for a few months, cut the end off the tube and leave for a while more.Split the tube, you have a big cylinder of diamond/ceramic, stone cleaner. works as well as anything else. washing up liquid and water on a really foul stone. Really, none of this is entirely needed, for a very long time the red side of an india stone was as much as most households had for all purposes, and I can still get a wicked edge on a knife with one. I went a bit crazy and bought all sorts of stones, plates etc, most of them are lying fallow now.

Sorry to post on such an old video. I just seen this video just now, and had to chime in on the ceramic sharping stone. Before my father passed away, we used to make knives together. We made them both from blanks, and we actually made them from ingots by smelting and melting them. We always sharpened them with ceramic cylinders from inside pressure washers, because years ago, we found out that they sharpened blades better than most normal methods did. He for a living designed and built custom pressure washers, or rather as the proper term is power washers. I was an industrial welder, making anything from rail road train cars to forms to make concrete drainage tubes up to 30 feet in diameter. We learned the value of ceramic sharpening, and using leather for strops 20 years ago, we also used a barbers chair strap for our strop, and I still use it now. BTW, great video.

Hi, easy way to clean ceramic stone is by use ( in europe we have something called ) "Cif" on a sponge. Its white fluid with small, abrasive balls. It doesnt damage stone and it takes less than minute to remove almost everything from ceramic stone. Best regards!

Although I'm a huge fan of ceramic water stones I do admit that this kind of whetstones are indeed very useful both for its results and for its easiness of use. They do not give as good results as a waterstone but they're a great choice for a quick and quality sharpening that does not require almost space, easy to transport, easy to maintain and non dependant of water. Thanks for the video.

I have purchased the fine and ultra fine Spyderco ceramic stones after watching your videos. (Still waiting for them to arrive). I love your videos! I’ve had a love for knives for years and have recently been purchasing (probably too many) knives. Your expertise is very well represented and gives me confidence to just go for it. Brand names should seriously start looking into you for marketing purposes. I love how you share your knowledge in an inspirational way. In fact, I recently purchased a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 for myself and a Spyderco Manix for my stepfather based on your videos, even though you never name dropped either of those knives, and I couldn’t be happier! BKF has been my go to for cleaning my Shun ceramic rod sharpener. I saw somewhere that muriatic acid will help clear away steel particles that clog up ceramic or diamond sharpening surfaces, so maybe that's appropriate for a deep clean every few months with heavy use? I'd research its interactions more before using though, and recommended dilution ratios when handling it for those purposes.

I did a double-take, thinking I was watching the same video. You obviously like this stone, having made two videos in a week on it! If you like ceramics and you think you might like something finer, check out "sintered ruby." The most common one is the 3k variety, which is very, very fine. This is what I usually shave off of, with just a few strops on a bare strop, after. It's almost the same thing as white or brown ceramics, which is to say it's a sintered aluminum oxide, but it has a pinch of chromium oxide added. This gives it unique properties of a bimodal crystal size distribution (makes it cut more efficiently for the finish) and it makes it very tough and fracture resistant. 1. It does not load up like the Spyderco white/brown ceramics. Just use a little oil or soapy water, and the grit will wipe right off. 2. It will actually last forever. If/when you drop it onto concrete, you will chip the concrete. 3. It is fairly cheap. It was patented by a German company, but the patent expired in 2013, or so. It used to be very expensive and largely used for cleaning dies and molds for industrial use. You might like to buy a cheap diamond plate of 600-800 grit to round over the corners and sharp edges. Your straight blades and recurves will thank you. Your concrete and hardwood floors will appreciate it, too.

+outdoors55, It’s fine that Spyderco starts off at medium. There are plenty of cheap, low-grit stones out there for profiling if needed. The Spyderco options (medium, fine, and ultra-fine) sound like a great and relatively affordable way to go. I say affordable given their durability if treated with care. Great find!

Hey man, I've been watching all your videos. im not as good as you are at sharpening but i have been using Simple Green all purpose cleaner instead of oil on my Arkansas stones and it seems to keep them very clean and i have a better edge when i use it instead of any oil. All I have to do is wipe the stone off after im done and it has literally no metal particles left afterwards. Might be something that could prove useful in cleaning your ceramic stone a little easier. Love the videos man!

I have this stone, along with their fine and extra-fine benchstones, plus two Spyderco Sharpmakers (an original one from the early eighties, plus another one I bought a couple of years ago), plus Spyderco ceramic "files". I also have lots of waterstones, diamond stones, and various jigs. If I was on a destert island and could have only one stone with me, it would be this one. It's slow to reprofile a damaged blade, but for sharpening it's great. For kitchen knives and EDC knives used for opening cardboard boxes and mail, this stone leaves a perfect "tooth" on the blade for those tasks. I only wish they made this stone in a larger size for my hand plane blades. A pink ink eraser from an office supply store also works to clean this stone.

I know this is an old video, but on the off-chance that you see this, just wanted to say, love your channel. It's what has actually made me get into sharpening seriously. I've purchased this stone, the Spyderco Medium, but it's slightly taller in just one corner. It doesn't seem to affect it if I flip it over though. My question essentially is can either side of the stone be used to sharpen and will the corner being very slightly taller affect anything? Thanks for the time and the channel!

I've had one now 15 or so years and stills works fine and is still flat. All my other stones are Arkansas oil stones. They are still flat too. I honestly can't see myself buying a stone that wears out and always needs to be flattened. Makes a lifetime tool a consumable item that one needs to replace over time. I am glad I got my translucent Arkansas stone a long time ago because now those things are outrageous in price.

I have the set and I definitely like/use the Medium grit the least. How quickly it loads up is definitely one of the main reasons - I actually soak it like a waterstone prior to use to hold water on the surface better, which helps a bit with the loading. If I had to recommend someone with just one stone, it'd actually be the Fine grit. Both the Fine and Ultra Fine doesn't load as nearly as much as the Med. I typically cleaned them with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, but I should give the scotchbrite pads a go. I recently got a DMT stone to handle the lower grit tasks, but I feel the Atoma diamond plates from Japan might be the best way to go.

All Spyderco sharpening stones are worth every penny . As far as nicks and extreme dullness in blades and getting them ready for good quality stones - Staple 120 grit sandpaper or sanding belts on a piece of pine 1/2 inch thick / 3 inch wide and 12 inch long . Put the wood in a vise . Good sized Arkansas stones (novaculite) are very difficult to find these days . Cool video and thanks OUTDOORS55 .

If you revisit this kind of topic again, I wonder what kind of sharpening stone surface could be produced from various found materials after preparing with the Whitworth method to true them out first? (Might even be able to get away with something cheap that doesn't wear out as fast as the sandpaper on glass method? Who knows, maybe the unfinished back of a ceramic floor tile could make a "poor man's" ceramic stone?)

After watching this video and debating if I wanted this stone I finally decided to purchase one. HOLY MOLY!!! Stones do make a difference! Before this stone I was using a $4 Harbor Freight dual grit stone and I applied your sharpening techniques. That in itself got some of my knives sharper than ever before. After that, I finally got the Spyderco med grit ceramic stone. I ran a couple of my knives over it and man oh man, I'm thoroughly impressed. So much, I believe I'm going to get the fine stone in the near future. I was able to put a decent edge on some knives that seemed near impossible to sharpen in the past. One thing I noticed is this ceramic stone is thirsty when I put some form of liquid/lubricant on it. I saw in your fine and ultra fine review you were using window cleaner. How much did you spray on the stone because I sprayed mine quite a bit and within a minute it was soaked through and for the most part dry. Also, does some form of liquid on this stone help with a finer edge than just using it dry? Spyderco packaging states it can be used dry, with water, or oil. What would you recommend? Also, watching one of your older videos you showed some trails you hike. I thought to myself "that terrain and foliage sure looks like PA". Then I think in one of your descriptions you mentioned you're from PA. If you ever get to hiking in "The Gap" (outside of Slatington and Palmerton) give me a shout and I will meet up with you at the trail head to do a section hike with you and talk shop about knives. That would be very cool. Thanks for your videos. Your techniques are most excellent.

I seldom use coarse or super fine, except when rejuvenating friends' neglected kitchen cutlery, using the former, and using the latter for finish honing scalpels for personal surgical procedures, heh, heh. I have something like 8 Shapton ceramic stones (I’ve even glued together two worn down 1000 grit stones to make one “new” one) which are more $$$ and must be continuously lapped, so I’m looking forward to getting this one on Tuesday....I’m always excited about anything that will improve my knife edges.

Hey Alex, if you want a coarse spyderco stone, check out the double stuff 2, its got CBN diamond on one side and I think fine ceramic on the other.

I've got the ultra fine Spyderco for touching up knives between sharpenings. It's great. I wish the bottom piece of the plastic contained and some slots cut in the side to help my hand knife handle clear it easier.

Try setting it on a dead flat wooden block and maybe use some shelf or drawer liner for kitchen applications to keep it from sliding...just take it out the box😁

The spyderco ceramic stones are great. Try the green srcubbie pads with soap to clean the blade residues. I have a modern Norton hard translucent 3"×8"×1/2" thick. It's really badass. Good upload!

I don’t own the spyderco medium benchstone but I do own the ultra fine. I use dawn and water on the stone, if I don’t it loads up very quickly. Also the stone had saw marks in it when I received it that will affect your edge, so I lapped it and finished at 3000 grit wet dry sandpaper and it’s as smooth as glass, it provides an excellent edge and has no problems with super steels such as cpm m4

Love to see you review the other two stones...I have the set and have used them to sharpen straight razors. I imagine you could get a serious edge on some of your knives using them in sequence. Enjoy your videos, great content and humour. Cheers Mike.

I’ll be picking up the fine and extra fine shortly. Looking forward to it. 71 is a lot! I would agree, I’d probably pay that for the medium stone as well.

I've replaced the water with Windex and I've noticed that it doesn't build up as bad as when using water to sharpen with. I also noticed a higher polish when sharpening with Windex. Hope it helps and great video

The easiest way to clean any ceramic and even diamond stone is using a rubber/easer for normal pencils. It works really nice and fast, try it :)

I recently ordered the fine bench stone. Fine is my favourite grade for touch-ups following by a strop with .1 micron CBN emulsion. I previously bought the CBN/fine doublestuff stone... LOVE that little thing. Portable but versatile. As for cleaning the ceramic, I don't like fussing with soap/abrasive powders and water, so instead I use a rubber eraser. Gets most of the steel out of the surface quickly and easily.

I can't justify yet another stone, but if you buy quality it lasts. I've got twenty year old dmt and eze lap stones that are still cutting fine. In the UK you will pay at least $100 for a good 8x3 diamond stone. If it needs it can you flatten the ceramic? I've got a pocket Fallkniven ceramic and it does a good job for a tiny stone, and as you say, it's easy to use.

Hey Alex I just watched your video on this Spyderco ceramic stone, which was great by the way, and was wondering how well it has held up after 3 years or so of use. Also was wondering if you would choose this stone over a Diamond stone. Thanks for all the hard work and effort you put into producing these very informative videos.

Great video, very informative. I have the pocket stone version in both medium and fine grit, great for honing before a strop. I found a regular eraser is pretty good at cleaning the metal off the stones in a pinch. Soap and water for a more thorough cleaning like you demonstrated though. Again, great video, thank you for sharing.

Great video, but simply had to point out that in the UK, these stones are not flat. Or at least, when I got mine some years ago, I could not find a flat one anywhere - even the retail stores knew this particular stone wasn't flat - so they couldn't offer me a flat one - as their stock was all 'curved'. Apparently, it is only the medium stone that wasn't flat - the fine versions were....no idea why. It is still a good stone - especially if you need to regain a bevel fast: I use it only for woodworking chisels, and it gets a bevel fast, then simply strop on leather and it's really fast to get you back to work.
