Hi Guys, as an owner of a similar vintage Taiwanese built Robert Perry yacht (Norseman 447) and a Boat Broker in Manly, Qld. We sold a similar Vintage Tayana 47 a few years ago, the buyer took off the teck decks (Cost them an arm and a leg to pay some one to do it but they were very worn) if yours still have reasonable thickness just look art refurbishing, take out exposed screw, clean out whole with a spade bit and put new plug in with a good dob of epoxy on the end, put a bit of everdure in hole first, this makes a solid fix and can give you a few more years. If she still has Black iron tanks try and inspect for any signs of corrosion, also have a look at chain plates may have to remove timber covers to see for any signs of leaks and corrosion, Teak capping rail and Hull to deck joins are usually pretty good but Genoa tracks can be prone to leaking, hope this helps, Great Boat that when the going gets tough will look after you and will have a kindly motion in a seaway.

Nice vessel, but make sure the cored hull is not water logged. Make sure you get the tool to test that above and below the waterline. It is a known problem with that model and the 52's as well.

My understanding is Tayana's hulls are PVC foam core, and these are closed cell and less likely to be water logged however delamination from fiberglass to the foam may be an issue if there is water ingress. Either way tap the hull. If the core was PU foam or Balsa they turn to mush. The Tayana decks are balsa....

In my limited experience with buying an old boat that has been neglected with a lot of apparent water damage is this; the work you see is the tip of the iceberg. I think any estimate of work time and money spent for repair should be multiplied by a factor of three and more possibly four. A hefty discount off the price would be needed to make it worthwhile. A hefty, hefty discount.

Go for it. I have a 1978 Perry design ( Lafitte 44 ) that I have been sailing since 1987, still has the original teak decks, Yes they have been some work but manageable, Our hull is foam cored and rock solid, good surveyors have pounded all over it but never found a void, Our deck is balsa cored a sometime pain but manageable. Be sure to check the core under the genoa tracks. If its wet its fixable. Offshore Perry broke the code on a fast enough comfortable boat that will take care of you if the conditions go pear shaped. Talk to Bob Perry his consulting fees were reasonable. I learned a lot .Good luck Tom Lane

Beautiful boat. Bob Perry is still in Seattle, he may have some insight on the specs on the deck. I would worry that the core of the deck may be compromised where the screws enter it. If you can handle that, the teak can definitely be removed, epoxy the holes, repaint and Kiwi grip, good to go.

oh my my... I am super practical old Brit and have rennovated several houses top to bottom, completing most of the work with my own hands. Ok not boats...but while fixing is challenging and fun, the exhausting demands of such physical labor is 80 per cent of the undertaking. You know that but this looks like a MASSIVE undertaking and if the hull is shot....well I followed "Sail Life" YT channel for a number of years. He bought "Athena", a 38ft 1987 Trident Warrior Sail Boat. He spent 5 years completely refitting including repairing a failed hull (osmosis). Almost not worth it when the hull is shot. THIS vessel sat on the hard for too many years never being put in - for a reason. Anyway hope it works out for you guys. Prayers to creation that you make (or made) the right decision.

Hey guys. Looked at a Tayana42CC in the UK. It's not the teak deck that put me off but the screws which had caused the deck core to rot. I'm sure that there will be some rot in the core somewhere. Nothing that can't be put right but in my case, the price wasn't right.

need to rip up that teak mate and glass it ,dont try to replace it that is probably why its been on a hard stand for years,i would knock 15-20k off the asking price as its going to be a lot of work fixing the deck plus you dont want the little one getting a big splinter off it and that kind of deck gets red hot when the sun beats down on it. You can do it mate but its going to be at least 6 months before you can put her back in the big blue.

I agree with that. Our boat had the teak removed and you wouldn't know it had been there. I know of Australians who sail their boats to Thailand to get their decks replaced. It is about a third of the price you would pay here. That would be if you could get anyone to turn up and do the work. I've been told we can get a trimmer to replace our canvas in September. Well that's what he said in December. I'm still waiting for the diesel mechanic who said he would be here on the first Tuesday in February. 2022 that is.

having owned a 57 foot boat for 36 years with full teak decks they are a semi maintenance pain but if i had your boat i would take up the teak and glass over the decks but you can divide it up into sections and finish them over a 2 year period , my teak decks were 3/4 inch thick and your decks seem to be thin teak strips and they are more problematic , nice yacht btw !!!

Everything that needs work appears to be well within your skill set. Leaky teaky, but you've got the right idea to pull it up and fill the holes. So much easier said than done, but it would solve so many issues down the road. If the price is right, I think you should seriously consider this vessel.
