At 73 yrs old, I now pay dealer techs to work on the Spyder. Like Clint Eastwood said in one of his movies..."a man has to know his own limitations"!!! LOL

Cool, That's true. I also like when Clint Eastwood said: He's in favor of gun control as long as he is in control of the gun. Or me of course. lol

Once again, Ace Spyder talk..! I'm not always happy with my tech, but I can afford my toy enough to let him do the tough stuff, and this was tough enough for me to pay the piper. Thank you so much for teaching me my limitations. As Always, you two be safe...

I don't have a Spyder but you kept my attention. I love learning just about anything mechanic. Especially if I feel and know the mechanic knows what he is talking about. Plus you made it look easy, as long as those folks with Spyders follow to the letter. You may have saved someones butt with those instructions. Great job.

That's my mechanic. If you don't know what the heck you are doing, ya better ask somebody. Lol. Wish we could have traded weather and I would have gladly done it so you could ride today. I won't rub in any details except it was exceptionally nice!!! Stay safe and wishing for better weather in the PNW!!!!!!

Absolutely great video on the rear brakes. Will downloaded to my archives. I replaced bearings in my rear wheel at 50,000 miles on my 14 RTL. When I put it all back together and aligned everything properly the brakes pads were tight and no loose play on the disk. So after test ride I knew something was incorrect. After I took it apart again I found that shim on the caliper that I knew was there was somehow missing. Somehow in the process of disassembly it fell off and rolled somehow under my tool chest. But that one little shim made all the difference I'm glad you pointed that out. BC

There is an aftermarket tool that is a little square block that you can back the park brake off with, too. Use with a ratchet. Works ok, too. Used on many auto applications. There are a lot of moving parts inside that brake piston. I don't like the design, but it works for the most part, but makes the caliper cost way more.

I have a 2013 ST and the 2013 BRP shop manual. The manual says nothing about turning the rear brake caliper disc clockwise to move the piston in. Just thought people may want to know that the manual is wrong in this area. But, doing the brake pad replacement is dead simple.

Have you had an issue with the parking brake motor? My motor will not move at all and seems like it's in between on and off. The cable freely moves after I disconnected it at the caliper. 2015 Spyder rts se6. The micro switch looks to have some oily dirt on it also. I will check fuses tomorrow also after I pick up my new pads from the dealer.

I have found on EBC brakes they seem to not be aggressive as OEM brakes on any bike. When riding it takes more pressure to get brake friction to feel.
@alanmann9656
@alanmann9656 Жыл бұрын
Well I have found just the opposite. I know Shawn has to say Brembo brakes is better because he work for a dealership. I have had a 2019 RT limited 46000 miles and have replace the pads three time and BRP pads wear fast and do not have the braking power of EBC pads. I have a 2023 RT Limited now with 9000 miles and the rear pads are close and I will be putting EBC pads on it.

Been watching since getting my 2013 RT-S January 23. Changing rear brakes all went perfect until I could NOT budge the piston! Big Needle Nose didn't work. Applied as much inward pressure as I could manage and never felt any movement inward and certainly didn't twist! Very different than all the videos which appear stiff and hard to turn but my experience was more like STUCK! Any advice?

On a 2012 RT I'm about to do rear pads...the parking brake is a bit different(non Brembro) is there any additional worries from what you have described...you mentioned these older models have splines ....do i need to remove the parking brake pulley and if I do does that return spring stay in the pulley or does it come flying out? I appreciate ur videos THXS!!

Is it necessary to take the brake reservoir cap off when screwing in the park brake piston?
@TheSmoaksVlogs
@TheSmoaksVlogs 3 жыл бұрын
No, as the park brake is purely mechanical…. However, if it’s really stiff, you may apply enough pressure to push the hydraulic piston back into its bore. In that case, make sure you don’t push too much fluid into the reservoir and cause an overflow. All that being said, you’re usually replacing pads when resetting the park brake, so again, keep an eye on the fluid level in the reservoir… Thanks Carl!!

Shawn, We recently purchased a 2016 Spyder RT Limited with 2800 miles.. yes not even broken in... well we had some problems with vibrations when running above 45.. (my thought wheels out of balance, brake problems) the dealer sent me to there sister shop a CamAM dealer.. they said yes there's a problem and after trying a few things came out that both front rims were bent.. (covered under warranty thank god) also I'm getting a brake pad smell (usually in the back of the bike when I stop) but not all the time.. and was told everything is ok with the bike didn't find anything.. I have emailed the dealer a few times with no response. guess I'm on my own now.. Now asking you any Ideas on what to look for?? otherwise the bike runs awesome... put over 3500 miles on in less that 2 months

@TheSmoaksVlogs

If you have that going on, and everything is adjusted correctly, there's a new bulletin about that..! Dealer needs to perform a some tests, if it fails, there is a new park brake motor available. Thanks!!

@TheSmoaksVlogs
@TheSmoaksVlogs 3 жыл бұрын
Use the two holes in the caliper piston to turn it in clockwise with strong snap-ring pliers or needle nose pliers. Make sure the park brake is released and you’re not actuating the arm while turning the piston in… You can get a socket set for cars that make this much easier. When back together, make sure you pump the brakes to pressure before actuating the electric park brake..! Take care Peter!! 👍
