Pay per mile is a duplication of the existing fuels taxes on petrol / diesel etc. Petrol and diesel are already taxed at 80+% at the pumps. The objective being to get drivers to obtain the highest MPG through vehicle choice and careful driving. Pay per mile subverts the right for a driver to choose how much they are prepared to consider the cost per mile of their driving. Will we have to submit mileage reports? OR will they use on our MOT's / service documentation? Difficult to administer and an unfair tax.

We have paid per mile for years, it is called fuel ''duty'' a tax on fuel, then we have to pay VAT on the taxed fuel. A tax on tax. These politicians have a fixation on taxing us as much as they can,

We pay the "Road Fund License," which when I started driving, was £155 for every car, for my last car it was over £300, for some new cars it's as much as £2,745, plus an extra £410 on top for 5 years after the first year! It's absolute bloody extortion! 🤬🤬 We pay fuel duty on our fuel, with vat on top, which is effectively pay-per-mile already! We're legally bound to pay insurance premium tax on our insurance, which seems to be an ever-increasing cost. Then we pay another bunch of tax on parts and labour to keep our vehicles safe and on the road. We pay plenty of taxes overall as vehicle owners and road users, it has to stop somewhere, and frankly it should have stopped at the turn of the bloody millennium!
@philiphughes411720 күн бұрын
For every £100.00 of fuel you buy, 63.5 %is tax ! Lob in Road Fund Tax, Insurance premium tax . Just let that sink in, and weep.

I predicted the term Pay Per Mile over 10 years ago when EV's were being sold. It was the only ligical way I could think the government could tax a vehicle that doesn't pay fuel duty.

The new proposal is being considered because government is well aware of the uptake of EV's and low emission cars and know it will hinder their income significantly as time moves on. The UK tends to roll out new VED schemes to newer cars and the general opinion is we will see a gradual rollout, starting with EV's and hybrid cars, then moving on to low emission cars. These cars are where the car tax is hemorrhaging lost revenue and will bring a swift boost to the coffers. The rates are believed to be around 3p per mile, so an average driver maybe looking at a cost of around £240 for the current average driver that travels 8000 miles per year.
