Indeed, I had to close my catering business purely because of the volume of paperwork involved around new rules on labelling for outside caterers around 8/9 years ago. Very different rules if you run a restaurant but they've made sure a lot of us can't afford to eat out so they are closing in droves. Our nearest small town is supposed to be getting regenerated but funny old thing, they've run into financial problems and there's only a few shops left.

So what other taxes will need to rise to make up the shortfall from losing the £35 billion worth of tax revenues from the motorist each year? Any ideas? One of these government quangos recommended 6p per mile so my car tax will go from £35 per year to £810, yes you read that correctly. So my license will be handed back like so many others will. Many of my foreign colleagues habe already said they will return home and I'll work locally going back to what i used to do. Remember Food shortages due to lack of drivers well get ready for this. Pay per mile is a duplication of the existing fuels taxes on petrol / diesel etc. Petrol and diesel are already taxed at 80+% at the pumps. The objective being to get drivers to obtain the highest MPG through vehicle choice and careful driving. Pay per mile subverts the right for a driver to choose how much they are prepared to consider the cost per mile of their driving. Will we have to submit mileage reports? OR will they use on our MOT's / service documentation? Difficult to administer and an unfair tax.

Definitely think there has been an anti-car agenda for some time; the 20mph Zones are big in Wirral now too, usually with a Road narrowing scheme, when I wrote to the local councillor his response was unsatisfactory to say the least! However, just like the proposed council tax reforms, pay per mile will be very expensive to implement and will not raise enough to pay for costs of implementing the scheme, unless of course, the new charges are very high.

My daughter lives in the Netherlands, I take her to the airport(40 mins) and pick her up. Fuel costs plus airport parking cost me around £12. If I do what the elite want and use our wonderful public transport it takes 3 hours to get there, I would have to travel with her as she can not manage a suitcase, carry on bag and grandchild. Total cost is £60 , I would be out for 7 hours or more and the elite call this progress.

What is equally worrying is how the government would implement such a policy? They would need a way to reliably measure this, which means trackers on vehicles. I also bet there will be a minimum payable amount regardless of the miles you do. The only silver lining is if this is applicable to electric vehicles. These are heavy vehicles that damage our roads more than ICE cars and they should pay their way.

Public transport is non existent apart from London, my daughter can't even get a bus from one town to another as they are so unreliable. If they do charge per mile those that don't pay tax or insurance will still get away with it. These individuals need to be targeted first, it's a huge chunk when there is roughly 1 million not paying it I just changed my RAV4 for another and had to pay £600 per year for my tax, my previous one was £180. The motorist is just being screwed left right and centre at the minute

We pay the "Road Fund License," which when I started driving, was £155 for every car, for my last car it was over £300, for some new cars it's as much as £2,745, plus an extra £410 on top for 5 years after the first year! It's absolute bloody extortion! 🤬🤬 We pay fuel duty on our fuel, with vat on top, which is effectively pay-per-mile already! We're legally bound to pay insurance premium tax on our insurance, which seems to be an ever-increasing cost. Then we pay another bunch of tax on parts and labour to keep our vehicles safe and on the road. We pay plenty of taxes overall as vehicle owners and road users, it has to stop somewhere, and frankly it should have stopped at the turn of the bloody millennium!

The new proposal is being considered because government is well aware of the uptake of EV's and low emission cars and know it will hinder their income significantly as time moves on. The UK tends to roll out new VED schemes to newer cars and the general opinion is we will see a gradual rollout, starting with EV's and hybrid cars, then moving on to low emission cars. These cars are where the car tax is hemorrhaging lost revenue and will bring a swift boost to the coffers. The rates are believed to be around 3p per mile, so an average driver maybe looking at a cost of around £240 for the current average driver that travels 8000 miles per year.
