Rivers are actually not so great as borders, since they sometimes change course. That causes a whole argument about whether the border still follows the original course or the new one That leads to one of 2 bad outcomes. Either the river is no longer the border (even though everyone has become used to it being the border) or someone just lost land to someone else Mountain ridges are much better since they are not easily crossed and they rarely move over time
@aaronh616910 ай бұрын
Ah, the Serbo-Croatian border.
@rateeightx10 ай бұрын
Yeah, But the problem with Mountain Ranges is, compared to rivers, They're relatively rare, So in some cases your choices for borders are: A river, Or a completely arbitrary line. In such cases, Personally I'd go with the river just because I think it looks nicer, plus rivers don't often shift by _too_ much, so even if one side does wind up losing land it's usually nothing catastrophic.

Venezuelan here: this has already been brought to attention in other places of the interweb but this "10 million voters 95% of whom said yes" figure is really being called into question because there was not actually a lot of people going to the voting centers, they were mostly empty. And this government isn't exactly known for being fair with elections. So they claim that 95% of voters said yes but most likely these figures are fabricated by the government so they can say the have popular support and just continue with their interests as usual. On top of that, I've heard a lot of people who work for the government say that they were forced by the military police to vote yes "or else"; and some reports of people being held at schools (we use schools as voting centers, not sure how common that is worldwide so I'm mentioning it just to be safe) and were not allowed to leave until they voted yes.

I wish it were otherwise, but Guyana doesn't stand much of a chance, jungle or no jungle. They're a young country of less than a million with little to no army, no military tradition and no serious support from abroad. In contrast, Vietnam is and always has been an exceptionally militaristic country with a long history of thwarting invasions. When they fought the US, the North Vietnamese already had decades of experience from their recent wards against the Japanese and the French. They were highly motivated by ideology and nationalism, and received ample support from the USSR and (initially) China. Jungles alone aren't going to hand Guyana a victory here.
@junovzla10 ай бұрын
I think Venezuela isn't going to be successful but not because of jungles specifically. We have them jungles too and I'm sure the military more or less knows how to deal with them. The thing is that there's a lot of shit going foul with Venezuela rn and if we try to actually invade another country it's going to be much worse for us. I guess it's just me hoping that we don't do anything because I know it will be bad lol.

I don´t think Guyana will stand alone. Brazil will not stand by, and has already sent troops to the border. Territories of The Netherlands and France are way too close for comfort. The US will not want an anti-west regime to expand. And much of the oil from Guyana is extracted by China, so China also won´t want this either.
@filipesmits215710 ай бұрын
Brazil is here too keep peace and mediate between Venezuela and Guyana. Maduro and Lula have great relationship so that would be alright. Dutch territories arent close to the region. France has not so much to do with this. The US also spend a lot of money and negotiation to the Maduro government, and they won't throw that all away. China is doing way more business in Venezuela than in Guyana, but I think China will play the same role as Brazil.

Id like to visit the British sometime in the future, for my masters dergree perhaps, but the situation does look Grim. I hope all works out well with no violence, becaue there is a 60:1 ratio. If 1 or 2 % of the Venezuelan population decided to relocate themselves there, they would be larger than the whole population. And we speak English, and are not aware at all much about spanish culture and so. We are mostly culturally tied to the caribbean, the USA and England. Fun Fact: Guyana has had ~700 000 in population for the last 30 years. Thats bcuz of migration. In Total, the population of people that have migrated from the country is probably significatly larger than those that have stayed, about 1.3Mil. Guyana has had one of the highest suicide rates and one of the highest brain drain rates in the world.

Hi, Greetings from Venezuela. If it makes you feel better I think that if we actually try to invade it's going to be equally as bad for us (if not worse) than it will be for y'all. Venezuela's current internal situation is very grim and it will only get worse if we take action, because the US will be handing out sanctions freely, and our economic situation is gonna get hurt real bad and we're gonna have another 2018 event (for context in 2018 a good portion of us were basically right next to dying of hunger because there was quite the food shortage and and inflation rates were quite intense). So yeah, I don't think the government is stupid enough to actually take action, and if they do it's gonna be terrible for the both of us.

Guyana is dealing with Exxon-Mobile because they (Guyana) do not have the experience or expertise to get the oil themselves. Venezuela's oil production has dropped significantly and continues to drop, so if Venezuela does take over and Exxon-Mobile is no longer involved, the odds are that the oil will not be accessed at all for a while. It is difficult to imagine any oil company getting involved in a venture that will require a substantial amount of money to access when this can be seized at any time by a government that has done this repeatedly before.

Technically, all of the land from the Orinoco River to the Amazon River is the Guyana Shield, so there are 5 Guyanas: Spanish (Venezuela), Portuguese (Part of Brazil), British (Guyana), Dutch (Suriname) and French. And also, the Region between the Esequibo River and Venezuela was part of the Spanish viceroyalty of New Granada, until the UK took a chunk of Suriname from the Dutch and ocuppied the area from Venezuela. I do not endorse any effort to retake it or the Venezuelan government, but this is another prime example of the British messing up borders.
