I'd rather just make a little less on a build than sell something I can't be confident will still be working in a couple of years. A Ryzen 5500 will still outperform one of these old Xeons and they're $100 new. You can buy used AM4 boards all day long for $50 these days. I also don't have to wait two months for parts to arrive from China. All it takes is to have the patience to spend about 3 hours a day on eBay and you'll find the deals.

That Time Spy result is just sad. I get close to 11000 points with my 3060, running with a 5600X. Even with a GPU underclock, I still get nearly 10000 points. Part of it is the fact that it is a cheap 3060 but part of it is the fact the Xeon really can't do it justice. The cherry picked game examples in this video don't tell the full story of what gaming on an old Xeon is like in 2024.

As far as I remember this is the first time I watch one of your videos. Good video, well laid out. One of my favorite parts is your voice. I am finding it very easy to follow and never once I had to repeat any segment because I didn't understand something you said. I am not British, so I don't know what exactly accent you have there, but whatever it is, it works for you so well! I have a similar CPU, the i7-5960X on a PC which unfortunately died on me few months ago. I am pretty sure the issue is the motherboard, but as I can't afford to get a new X99 motherboard, I am sticking to my even older i7-4710HQ based laptop. The price difference for the CPU is indeed crazy, I bought my i7 10+ years ago for 1000 euros. I still regret doing so, though mostly for its lack of iGPU and quicksync, which I ended up needing more than I originally thought I would. I don't have money, but I am tempted to give it a go and order a X99 motherboard if I find one with at least two M.2 slots and 4 DIMM slots. If I somehoe have the money of course. I do not recommend it (or similar CPUs) in 2024, newer CPUs are so much better it's insane, but for a budget system if you can find the hardware very cheap, it can work. The RTX 3060 (which is beautiful IMO) feels like a good pairing. Thanks for the video.

They really aren't great in 2024. The first gen E series CPUs have literally half the single thread score of a Ryzen 5500. Here, the 2689 is severely bottlenecking the 3060 in CS2 and it is because of the CPU single thread score. A 4th gen i7 will definitely perform better in CS2. Starfield isn't a reason to buy an E series Xeon because by the time you pay for the power to run it in the UK, you would have been better off just buying a Ryzen 5500. Also, the high end Xeons turn those cheap X79 MBs into a fire hazard. Unless you go with a V3 or V4, you won't have AVX2 support which means there are already games you can't run and you're not going to be playing too many new releases moving forward. You also won't be able to install Windows 11 on it. You can bypass the check but Microsoft has stopped pushing Windows 11 updates to machines without AVX2 support. I feel like this test was cherry-picked and OP made no attempt to demonstrate what are some very real limitations these days. The fact Starfield is poorly optimized and needs more than 8 threads to run really isn't an argument for these old Xeons because any Zen 3 6 core Ryzen will perform much better. I played Starfield on an overclocked Ryzen 2600 and a 3060 at 1440p with a mix of medium and high settings and got double OP's framerate. That was at launch. I would really recommend that most gamers just skip right over that title. I played it for free and still felt like I got ripped off.

I'm not sure AVX2 is supported in this particular CPU, but people beware, certain games like MotoForza 5 will not run at all without AVX2; the developers have made it a requirement, so even if your Xeon is a beefy one with a lot of cores and thread, this very requirement may render it obsolete.

It's really worth noting in your video or description. TBH, I really hated this requirement because its microcode baked into CPU architecture moving forward, which like I said makes your old CPUs obsolete. My rule of thumb is that once a hardware that I have no longer is able to run a new software or game I just bought, it's time to upgrade. For the longest time, I had my i7 2600k, as it ran anything, be it lower settings on some of my games, but the moment I bought MotoForza 5 and it won't run and crashes into an error saying missing AVX2, i was pissed because not I have to upgrade to at least i7 4790, so I went with the latest and greatest 9700k. Personally I am thinking a used Ryzen first gen 1700/1700X and a new B350/450/550 Motherboard is the steal. All of it is DDR4 and can allow you to bump up to a 5800X3d in the future. If one is fine with a used MB then even better. Yes your 1 pound chip is a bargain, but it is using questionable MB's and old tech with no upgrade path. Old AM4 has been around so long. The bargains are there. One can get whole systems for a super bargain. Liked the vid btw and keep up the content!

Completely agree, highlighted in the video or tried too. Yes a 1700/1600AF etc would be better but then your £50/£60 in for an AM4 motherboard £30/£40 for the cpu and £30 for the ram so at least a £100 which is a lot when you’re on a budget. Completely agree AM4 is where it’s at, if you can and I’d always look for a used bargain first but for the £40/£50 mark your looking at Haswell H81 and an i7 4770 etc which this option is miles better. Really X99 is the better bet at the moment if you really are skint or just save up.

Kids these days don't know the joy of having a 1 core CPU and overclocking it to absurd frequencies

Haha yes that was the good old days! 486 was my first system and that’s a long long time ago 😅

My Xeon E5-2696V3 turbo unlocked with quad channel paid €44 kicks the ass to Ryzen 5800x3d . Maximum TDP 175W🤓☠

I am pretty sure, it doesn’t, as long as it is not cherry picked benchmarks or apps/ games.

It would put up a good fight and maybe a Ryzen 3600/5600. 5800x3D is a beast of a chip 😅

3060!? Likely of a CPU bottleneck no? Those cards bottleneck even with first gen Ryzen.

Agreed, it was more of a real world test. What would a sensible pairing be given the market in 2024. RTX3060 12GB takes the ticket 🤩
