Its nice of you to share your fitting experience. It seems you'd fallen into a lot of the misconceptions and myths that a lot of people do when it comes to club fitting. People that consider themselves tall think they need longer than standard, and people who think they're strong or fast think they need stiff or extra stiff. Many people are bullheaded and not open to change, but the people that are open to listen to a fitter and are willing to try something different from what they have used in the past can see significant benefit from a fitting. If someone sets up with bad posture (legs too flexed, upper body too upright, arms laying on top of the chest their hands will be positioned high, grip points at or above the belly) they'll think the need longer or more upright clubs (or both). Take the same golfer : hinge them from the hips with the center of the hips positioned above the ankles, let the arms hang to the side of the chest (look at a close up of Mcilroy at address), and let the arms hang under the shoulders, and you find the golfers back and club shaft now create a 90* (or close to it) angle. Now the club shaft points along the beltline, and a standard length and lie angle work well. Now if someone swings, comes out of their posure, and early extends (or swings excessively out to in) once again the fitting will suggest more upright lie, but if the golfer swings with good posture and doesn't early extend, and brings the hands and arms down (like the pros) instead of out the hands will return to a similar height at impact to were they started at address and lie angle fitting will be standard to maybe even flat. The more flexible a shaft the higher it can potentially kick the ball (if you're transferring energy into the shaft) and the steeper angle of decent that can be produced., The stiffer the shaft the less it will bent, the lower the ball will be launched, and the lower angle of decent that will be produced. Rory Mcilroy is both strong and fast (swing speed wise), yet he hits the very wippy and flexible G-Force swing speed trainer straight and on a good height. That's because his swing is on a good path into the golf ball, and he is transferring energy into the shaft (which causes the shaft to straighten) at impact.

Great film Rob.. I’ve played golf since I was 40 ( now 60) .. have owned over 100 sets of irons from vintage to new.. as I love trying different types to see how they work out.. although I found that stiffness did make a difference.. I always managed to manipulate my swing to more or less fit the irons I had at the time.. from blades to the chunkiest.. seeing this film makes me realise the benefits of fitting are to get better margins and tighter dispersion.. really interesting to see Laura go through the numbers with you and a great thing to do if you want to be the best you can be at golf..👍

I'd be interested if they tried changing the head weight as well. Going from the 14 to 16 gram weights can add to the launch/decent angle as well.

Great video l am also 6'3" my current set are 1 1/2" inches longer and 2 degrees upright they are now 10 years old. I have booked some lessons as my swing has changed since a knee replacement and l have just turned 60. I intend to go for a fitting but wonder if getting fitted on a mat when we play off grass gives a true reading what do you think. cheers
@RobMcGarr
@RobMcGarr 9 ай бұрын
Good question. I don't think hitting off a mat really changes the way you swing, so wouldn't affect what length/lie you need, but you could always go for a fitting somewhere where you can hit off grass if you're not sure.

The length and lie angle is fascinating. I’m 6’4” and my irons are 1” longer and 3 degrees upright. They were more of a static fit 6 or 7 years ago. Might be time to put myself in the hands of a professional.
@RobMcGarr

Yeah I think things have come on a bit since static fittings, I guess because it's impact that matters more than anything else!
@fairwayfirstgolf2033
@fairwayfirstgolf2033 9 ай бұрын
Static fit is a reasonable starting point but it isn’t the final word in fitting. As a tall golfer (6ft6) I have done lots of fittings like this and played everything from standard (whatever that is this week!) length lie to +1.75 and 4 upright or more. Someone smart once said that you should probably play the shortest irons you can comfortably play because the odds of hitting the centre of the face go up. This is probably solid advice. I have played some good golf with all standard, r300 shafts at 6ft6 and 90mph or so with my seven. Maybe going in with an open mind and trusting the process/fitter is key.
@RobMcGarr
@RobMcGarr 9 ай бұрын
@@fairwayfirstgolf2033 Yeah I did think that shorter shafts should make it easier to hit relatively straight, and they didn't seem to cost me anything in clubhead speed.

Would it not make sense to use a premium ball for a fitting? Surely that would alter the numbers for spin rates etc
@mrwoo33
@mrwoo33 9 ай бұрын
Did you have the same swing weight? Were the shafts lighter? And the same length? Just curious that's all. Think the pro are hollow back design so I'd be expecting a little extra ball speed over the I25. Great video 👍

I guess I just don't trust humanity. Every time I turn around, I see people doing things out of greed. My fear would be that instead of getting an honest club fitter, I would get someone out to make a sale rather than keeping your best interest in mind.
@todaysgolfer
@todaysgolfer 9 ай бұрын
Definitely not an issue, here. The fitter wasn't there to sell us the product. We needed to be fitted for the best Apex irons for Rob for further tests and review. Possibly more of an issue if you got to retailers for fitting, where they need the sales and could work on a commission.

It is fair worry. I would suggest going to a fitter who charges a decent price for a fitting that is not refunded if you buy clubs (or knocked off purchase price of new clubs), that way it reduces the financial incentive to sell.
