A dear friend and long time avid gardener once told me “Life is too short to live with a tree you don’t like!” Applies to all plants, I think! Great show.

This fall, we’ve done the same. I’ve pulled plants I’m not in love with. We tote them to the front yard by the sidewalk and I write “Free” with sidewalk chalk. Within a day, maybe two, they’ve disappeared, and hopefully loved by someone else. It’s a win/win.

I am in the process of redoing several beds and removing plants. I gave away most of the the plants I removed. My neighbors had places in their yards for the plants, and I was glad. I like the beds better now with new plants, and my neighbors liked getting free plants. Win-win!

I think it is harder to remove a healthy plant than a sick one. My KZbin gardening friends have given me the encouragement to get rid of plants that don’t make me happy and it is worth it in the end.

Is love to have some David Austin roses, so I cringed a bit to see you throw that one away, but I agree - plant and keep what makes you happy! I’m busy rearranging my gardens now, too - worked three hours yesterday and already love the progress I made! So satisfying!

Does Strawberry Hill have thorns? You’ll probably snag your clothes if so. I’m not familiar with this rose, but I wouldn’t put most roses in a position like that. I have Zephrine Drouhin by my front walk, but it’s thornless and a sweet smelling, prolific blooming rose. The catch is that although it does repeat bloom, the encore is never like the fantastic spring show. Another plus, however, is that it blooms in spring and is finished with its first flowering before the Japanese Beetles emerge. Best wishes with your plantings!

Hi Matthew! It's too bad the rose didn't work for you, but the one you got to replace it is a beautiful color and will be really pretty there. I love the colors on the 2 climbing roses you are considering for your arbors. I'm excited for you about your fence going in next Thursday, weather permitting. Fingers crossed for good weather for you! I'm looking forward to seeing it and what you plant by it, and meeting your pups. Thank you so much for sharing!

Matthew, I totally agree with you on removing any plants, trees, or shrubs from my landscape that aren't performing or have reoccurring issues. After all, it's my property, and no one else is entitled to tell me what I should or shouldn't do in my landscape. However, I do love hearing constructive suggestions and ideas from other gardeners. I give away lots of starter plants and produce every year, and I love the suggestion that someone made about putting plant divisions on the curb along with a FREE sign. I may do that next spring, but I'll never give away something that has created a problem for me. I totally am enjoying your videos. Have a great weekend. ~Margie

I thought you said if it doesn’t fart joy throw it away lol. I had to go back and listen again and heard it correct spark not fart 💨 lol but fart works too!!! I have a couple David Austin’s I bought this year and none of them did very well. Im hoping it was just because it was the first year and that next year they will hit their stride. Your garden is coming along beautifully. Just bought a flat of pansies and violas for a cheap quick fix to my fall containers. It rained all day though so maybe tomorrow.

Yes. This video is very timely. I'm in my garden now and will dig up a big leaf hydrangea that has not performed well in 2 years and plant a little quick fire paniculata. hydrangea in it's place.

I always liked the colour and form of golden celebration flowers but hesitated because of the upside down blooms ☹️. I took a chance this year and although it scores on fragrance all the blooms are upside down, great if you're a lepracaun but disappointing AND it gets terrible Blackfoot. So despite the mouthwatering colour photos of this rose I might shovel prune it

Maybe if you had a place to make it arche and secure some branches all around and make it more architectural? I saw it in some English gardens and thought that is really nice! I want to try that as well. I don't know if they call it rumble rose bush ....not sure.

A hard pill to swallow is ripping something out and tossing it. I have stated before that I like to move things to a fringe area which I do have plenty of but I have lambs ear that must go because I am redesigning that whole flower bed to adjourn new veggie beds. It can be very invasive even though it has great texture and flower stalks. It is getting ripped out and put near the big pond. We do what must be done. Have you checked out any Brugmansia to add to the garden? They are magnificent and have a wonderful fragrance early morning and late afternoon. That roses failure may be the very reason it was pulled from the catalog. I can't wait to see the fence installed.

My sentiments exactly! Get rid of it if you’re not happy. Oh Lordy! I am starting Honeysuckles on an arbor. I hope that I don’t have the issues that you have had. Take care, 🌞 Sunshine!

That was a climbing rose. The long canes gave it away. When growing up and over an arbor, the nodding blooms face downward where you can see them! A climbing rose with clematis can go great when grown together.

I'm having the exact same problem with my rose which I also want to get rid of. Can it be the same rose? Mine is Crown Princess Margareta. Also can I recommend Kordes roses? They have none to very little blackspot and I have never seen them with powdery mildew at all. Their arborose series are all very beautiful with dark green foliage.

Crown Princess has way more petals than this one, but the color is very similar. I have looked at Kordes Roses, specifically for my moon gate and arbor, but they have such a small collection of climbers that none of the colors caught my eye.

I don’t really believe that you should do this. If it doesn’t make you happy, let it go. The fact you previously spent money on it is of no consequence. It’s a “sunk cost” as we like to say in accounting. You can’t get it back. But, do what makes you happy in your garden! I choose to get rid of things no matter how much I spent on them if I’m not happy with them.

I dug up all my store-bought roses this year after the Japanese beetle and aphids infestation. I've decided maybe roses are not for me ,I like to weed my garden once a week and enjoy it the rest of the week. I do not want too many fussy things to have to deal with.

I too have killed so many roses. I can grow many things and some I even push the zone limits but roses kick my tail. I have one rose, an Abe Lincoln that hs survived and even thrived in spite of me, he has been moved several times and even changed counties, and he is still growing after almost 30 years. He stays! 😊

A couple of videos back, you suggested the Oso Easy Double Pink Rose. I bought it in a 4" pot from Hirts and when it arrived, I put it in a larger container. It is in a sunny spot in the backyard. I am in Zone 7b (NC). Would you recommend bringing it indoors before the 1st frost? Or can it stay outside in the pot through the winter? If the latter, should I cover it when we have frost and snow? Thank you.
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden 2 жыл бұрын
I would heel it into a raised bed or plant it directly in the ground. I wouldn’t leave a plant that small out over winter in a container since it has a very small root system. It may be ok if you don’t have a bad winter and provide it some protection, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

The rose you pulled was Roald Dahl! I planted it bare root this spring and am having the same feelings about it as you are. The light green color of its leaves is normal for this variety. Flowers are very small and only last a couple days. Very gangly as well, so I’m hoping its canes get stronger next season

I think that looked like a Crown Princess Margareta?
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure it was Pegasus which they removed from the catalog. Crown Princess has way more petals I think than this one and the leaves are darker. Pegasus has “arching” growth, which in my opinion is just a fancy word for floppy, because that’s all this one did and why it was removed. I needed something much more upright in the area and didn’t have use for it elsewhere in the garden.

This broke my heart to see you treat this rose so brutally. I have never owned a David Austin rose. They are so expensive. It was beautiful and could just have been transplanted to a different location or given to someone. Perhaps guerrilla planted in a city planting are for others to enjoy.
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden 2 жыл бұрын
They’re not more expensive than any other shrub. You can order them directly from David Austin for around $30 each. I removed it for the reasons I stated. You couldn’t even see the blooms because they all hung downward. I love the color, but it didn’t make for a nice looking shrub. Space is a priority and if it doesn’t work, I’ll remove it. I used to have a harder time with it than I do now.
