The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered

2 ай бұрын

It is March 6th, and 549 years ago today Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born in the Republic of Florence. Known simply as Michelangelo, he was a sculptor, a painter, an architect and a poet. Widely regarded as the greatest sculptor in history, his works can certainly be said to have stood the test of time. But, of course, over that time, things continued to occur on March 6.

It's interesting to note that Davey Crockett was rarely ever called "Davey" by people who knew him. He was regularly called "David" Crockett. There's speculation that the nickname may have come from the song in the 1950's that played in several Disney movies starring Fess Parker.

I'm very sorry, but you're wrong sir. David Crockett was very much aware of the moniker "Davey" and he absolutely HATED IT. It was created LONG before the song from the 1950s. It started with a play that was written and performed before he left for Texas. The play was popular in the Washington DC area for quite some time. Unfortunately, most of the play was not based in facts. The play stylized him as Davey and the nickname followed him everywhere. He insisted that he be called David. I honor his wishes from Nacogdoches, TX.

Michelangelo made fresco paintings. One of the tools employed in such work is to sketch out the preliminary outlines onto paper, then affix these drawings to the freshly applied _intonaco_ where the markings were transferred onto the wet plaster. There they served as a guide for the actual painting. The paper draft pressed to the plaster was called a cartoon... ...so Michelangelo drew cartoons for a living.

The Dred Scott decision was one of those key historical events that was severely undertaught when I was growing up. Schoolbooks generally said what it was but didn't go into detail as to its true significance. It was only many years later that I learned just how bizarre that decision was. Because the Supreme Court said that slaves weren't citizens, that appears to have lead directly to the 14th Amendment after the Civil War, the 13th of course abolishing slavery.

Henry Grosmont Earl of Lancaster was made Duke of Lancaster on 6th March 1351 by Edward III. No dukedoms existed in England before the 14th Century. The Dukedom of Lancaster was A-List from the start until the present as from 1399 the Dukedom has been contingent with being the monarch and uniquely the Monarch/Duke has a political representative right in the heart of government. The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster sits in the Cabinet with the Prime Minister and other Secretarys. This was prior to "newbies" and other "Johnny-come-latelys". 😉

With regards to the Texas Revolution: Texians didn't react solely to the massacre at the Alamo in a manner opposite of the opinion of Santa Ana. The massacre of the troops at Goliad under the command of Colonel Fannin shortly after the fall of the Alamo was a highly significant motivator as well. In truth, it was a combination of BOTH atrocities that fueled the fires of Texas Independence. Not one or the other alone.
