Fun fact, Boston actually once had some of the longest piers in the world. Unlike New York which has one of the deepest natural harbors in the Americas, When Boston was founded, it was actually incredibly difficult and next to impossible for ships to dock because the water in the bay was so shallow. To remedy this, colonists constructed long piers extending into the bay so ships could dock, over time the the city grew and developers reclaimed land from the surrounding bay diminishing the true scale of the piers. Today the majority of downtown boston is on reclaimed land. Daniel Steiner explains this very well in his “Boston Map, Explained” video.

Great video as always, just a few recommendations: 1. The customs building/Maritime museum/ German elementary is diagonally fronting water, the roads that go around him intersect as bridges, I will recommend to run a small road with a key on the water side 2. I will really like to see the marina having some old row-housing, seems like something super iconic to New England port cities 3. Battery hill should probably be switched to some sort of British zoning (It's old enough to have been built by the British in a British style) maybe terraced housing or mixed use. 4.I think the city is big enough for some light rail/trams. The tram could be some preserved streetcar on one of the major roads of the city, nothing too big (this is America after all) and maybe use the small tram depot mod to avoid the giant vanilla building. 5. I really think somewhere near the old harbor a nice big church, can't be too old because of the fire but at least but at least 150~ years old 6. In general I think a city with a size and density like port John won't have any heavy industry in the downtown, I can definitely see using some factory props and building some old factory condos, in what reality is fishing warehouses existing near a large tourist attractions (the fort), a downtown with skyscrapers and on the water? Excellent video as always. 7. I think trying to build a large pedestrian area in the harbor could be fun 8. A lot of old brick surfaces on the peers could be a good look, I think Providence does that. 9. The park could have a statue (using some assets from the cemetery building maybe?) of someone/general memorial

Given the age of the port and with a large customs house, would have been a significant harbour for some distance. So it might have a regional name like Easthaven Wharf? The small lot in downtown would make a great site for a memorial park for the 'great harbour fire'. Thanks for another great video Infra :)

For that corner lot by the train station, I kind of like the idea of a mixed-used building, maybe imagine it as a bodega or a well-established local restaurant with apartments above it. Something small that's a holdout from before the high density build-up dominated the area.

Love the idea of a historic fire (or “conflagration”) as the driver for the buffer park. It seems like an idea that would have come out of the City Beautiful movement, c. 1890. Maybe that puts the date of the fire in the late 1880s. It could have been caused by any number of things, but it would probably have been fueled by oil, lumber, or even cotton warehoused in the port. Boston and Portland, ME both had incredibly destructive conflagrations in that era - not to mention the Chicago fire.

Saint John, New Brunswick also had a city-leveling fire in 1877 (appropriately named the Great Fire of Saint John). ⅖ of the city destroyed in forty hours of inferno so close to the shore it looked like the water of the harbour itself was ablaze
@Infrastructurist

1880s sounds about right - it matches my circa timeline for when the first development of the newer Port of Fort John started, and the general architecture of the old residential towers that face the park 😊

It's similar to what Toronto is doing with the Portlands waterfront redevelop right now. The canal running through the docks was probably originally for moving coal barges and the like through the dockyard. The lagoon would have originally been a small inner harbour. It was probably turned into parkland and a recreational marina after the heavy industry moved to the new port on the other side of the island.

The segments in front of the customs building don’t make a ton of sense. Historically, that building would have been built with the corner piece facing the water side (as representative buildings visible to all ships that come in), but then also the main entrance would be located on that corner face. In that context, having the main entrance on two spreading bridges segments is not very logical. My idea: delete the two separate bridges and draw a new bridge segment over the little pond, which then splits in two quay segments right in front of the customs building‘s corner face. That way the bridge would point right towards the building, which is exactly how it would have been built 18-1900s.

Another great build! I didn't think I'd like the canal behind the wharf, but I really like it. The wharf was probably built on a sandbar or barrier island that was reclaimed/terraformed. I'm from Seattle, and the entire downtown waterfront is literally landfill as it was a pretty severe cliff into the Puget Sound. The landfill was everything from dirt/rock, refuse, old boats and buildings and the like. I'm always amazed at the creativity of CS2 players. I would only make one very minor suggestion. Districts along water features should extend into the water feature as the district would be responsible for emergency services for water rescue and policing. Thanks for the amazing and fun content!

There should be pieces of old rail lines and possibly even an abandoned rail line running along the coast. The rail could connect to the destroyed bridge. name suggestion for the old harbor: Port St. Elmo St. Elmo’s Fire is a weather phenomenon that was seen as an omen of good luck by sailors, but the name can also subtly call back to the “great fire” lore. ties the two concepts together a bit, fire and sailing, in a sort of ironic way seeing as a fire is far from lucky.

This is maybe going to sound much darker than I meant it to, but I kind of like the idea of letting things burn down every now and again in my builds lol. It feels like a realistic and kind of random way of justifying more modern upbuilding. I've also used it as a reason to drop down greens and/or parks. I've found that it's a good way of telling the tale of your town. I think it makes links in your head that makes it easier to remember why things turned out the way they did.

Super cool looking and creative as usual!! Boston, like many U.S. cities of the time it seems, did actually have a big fire in 1872, starting in a warehouse and destroying most of what is now the financial district. It was rebuilt with straighter, wider roads, and the new Post Office Square afterwards. It makes sense the city would do something similar here! Not to mention, your canal looks like a much cooler version of the Rose Kennedy Greenway, the park sitting between the water and downtown, formerly the Central Artery Elevated Highway (I-93). I say cooler cause instead of burying a highway you put a pleasant park and canal. I digress, great work as always, looking forward to seeing the next video!

Thanks a lot! Yeah it's wild how many cities have had "great fires", and I think the canal at least makes the beautiful ornate 1880-1920's architecture close by more plausable, instead of having industry stacked right up to the beautiful downtown up until de-industrialization of 1960's and onwards :-)

If I can make one suggestion for the fort, I think one thing that may be a neat addition would be heavily planting tress in some areas along the lower wall and leaving large open green space around the twisty path. A lot of former forts in New York City had been left to get wild like that with public parks such as Fort Totten, or Fort Tryon (although Tyron was actually a palatial estate) for inspiration. I think filling out the tree density would make sense for a big public park near a dense neighborhood like that.

An idea for the Buffer Park could be the Tollhouse Brink, which would stem from the early plans for the customs house to be the only building to be rebuilt there. A brink means an edge or margin, associating it with the transition from the land and the sea, but the settlers from the Netherlands and northern Germany would also likely interpret this word as a public green space, sort of a village green - I believe the Danish name for the concept is forte - creating an interesting ambiguity for future placename researchers.

Can we call Old Harbor, "Indian Rocks Park?" It could be a perfect name for the area. Back in the day the bay would have been perfect fishing for the native Americans as it shields from the ocean. The rocks part could be from when development happened they found a bunch of arrow heads and flint and stuff while digging. The fire could have happened due to America's historic racial problems. Could have been the native Americans mad about taking off their lands or racial group mad about the name. Or even the fire could have started due to an attack by the damn red coats during the revolutionary War.

An explanation for the fire could be that, during World War I, the United States was deploying large numbers of troops and vast quantities of war materials to Europe. The port facilities were overstretched and operating far beyond their intended capacity, which meant proper safety precautions were not followed when storing explosive materials in the warehouses. These materials, waiting to be loaded onto cargo ships, were often stored haphazardly due to the severe overcrowding. In this chaotic environment, a worker discarded a cigarette that accidentally ignited an artillery shell lying on the floor. The shell, improperly stored due to the lack of space in the warehouses, triggered an explosion. This initial blast set off a chain reaction among the stockpiled explosives, creating a massive inferno that consumed the entire port district.

For the empty plots you should put either a really old or famous hotel like the Roosevelt in LA or the don cesar in Florida, or putting in like a Ferris wheel like in Seattle’s pier or the London eye would be really great. Maybe an alternative to your fire/ buffer park story is the Hamburg Speicherstadt - which is a dedicates old trading harbour with a lot of canals inbetween (it is an island now) - the canal you dug was to increase the number of ships unload in Fort John back in the day when the ships where small - and a storm flooded/ rinsed under parts that are now the buffer park - so name it maybe flood park or something like that

To explain that channel park (I've seen these in actual northeastern cities, so what you've built isn't totally off base) along with the lack of rail infrastructure around the industrial port... What if the fire started in one of the old port rail yard's fuel storage tanks and led to a massive conflagration that took out much of Old Port's service infrastructure and old Customs Building. At the time, residential real estate along the old harbor was increasing in price and heavy industry was already migrating to the other side of the island with the construction of a larger, more modern port in the early 19-teens to support arms manufacturing for the Great War. The fire, the Lowell Yards Fire of 1918 (which was after the decommission of the Boston and Lowell Railway), led to the start of downtown redevelopment into a center for commercial and residential infrastructure and conversion of the old harbour to light industry and eventually to what it is today. The park was named the "Lowell Yards Memorial Park," though as time went on most locals just call it "Channelside" because it sounds more trendy. I think that also builds into the old customs building being moved - as it burnt down in the Lowell Yards fire, what could be saved from the old building was rebuilt into the New Customs Hall (now museum). Hope this seems cool!

I think you can justify some early 1800s buildings on the island that's closer to the battery because there's a natural firebreak there. In Boston and Newburyport, the fishing and oldest warehouses are two and three story red brick buildings. For a small-scale reference, Market Square in Newburyport (more historic and less populous than Boston / Cambridge Charlestown). In Boston, the iconic used-to-be-a-warehouse buildings are centered around Commercial Street in the North End. Another Boston tourist staple that might be worth incorporating is Faneuil Hall / Quincy Market, which has in its history of being a public market, a glass-covered roof, like a modest Les Halle, which you could build with a greenhouse asset. The market idea is also at odds with surviving in the downtown fire story, but I would like to remind you that Boston has hosted one of the most bizarre disasters in history - the Great Molasses Flood of 1919 - so you are welcome to choose a story that's equally improbable., perhaps something about whale oil.

Considering the fire disaster backstory, maybe the park should be some sort of "memorial" park. Also, as reactive as politics usually is, I think a large fire station / disaster recovery center would be a natural fit for one of the repurposed piers.

heyy, great videos¡¡ you should place and old marketplace that has been half redeveloped into a more turistic way where you can buy raw fish o have a fish meal for example

In my imagination the fire would have also spread a little beyond the transitional zone, destroying historical buildings which is where now the modern skyscrapers stand. Maybe the park name could be something to commemerate the victims of the fire

Long time viewer, first time commenter. Love your channel! One thing I've noticed is the lack of churches in the North American inspired cities. Before the industrial era, North American city skylines were dominated by Church steeples. For any semblance of realism, there should be some placed in the city, particularly a New England city

Love the canal idea, however since it's a modern artificial canal you should make it run straight and alongside with the road. The lake seems an overkill, would not be a justified public expenditure

@10:50 -- on the one hand, a historical preservation society would be appalled by the installation of solar panels atop a historical structure. On the other hand perhaps it shows renovation for sustainability?

I'm really feeling the lake and I think a good name for it could be "Prosper Lagoon" very in line with puritan naming and lagoon is a fun word :3

Given its proximity to downtown, that open spot could potentially be used for a ferry terminal.

The roundabout in front of the customs office shouldn't be clear. I think an old, huge tree would fit way better. The reason behind is that the tree survived many storms, and that's why sailors called it the lucky tree for centuries. In modern times, the city wanted this tree to be cut down to make a crossroad, but people of Fort John protested against cutting it down, forcing the planners to design a roundabout around it.

Lovely little place! I enjoy the red surfaces, I want to use them all the time myself because I think it makes everything look cool :D But I'm a bit too lazy to use them often... I've been dreaming of a mod that lets you choose road and pavement surfaces for either specific roads or entire regions or smth. Or maybe you select a surface, click on a road and it sets the road's surface to the one you chose. Also your ideas about the better service area picking UI were really good! Have you noticed that you can't designate areas for road maintenance? It caused me some trouble once because I had two areas connected by a long two-lane bridge and the road maintenance vehicles traveling from one side to the other kept really slowing down traffic, and I found out I couldn't force them to only maintain roads on their respective sides 😅 And I've rambled a bunch now... Sorry

Great build. Would love to see some surviving historic housing stock from the early/colonial days, maybe rowhouses. Like Boston's North End. But otherwise wonderful job.
