I particularly enjoyed your motorbike ride all the way, when you decided to stop for the night. Riding motorbikes in the monsoon season is a challenge without the rain gear in South East Asia. Getting drenched in the rain and the wind chill makes one really feel cold. The good side to this is, you would build some immunity of catching a cold. It is such a dreadful feeling coming home totally drenched and rushing to the bathroom, remove the clothes and then have cold shower. After which, getting into warm clothes and enjoying a warm drink takes you to high heaven reminiscing the journey. What a great feeling.

This is the beauty of freedom, no need to be rushed because of limited vacation. There are many local home stays if it has good view, 500 THB is quite normal. Of the beaten path is the characteristic of your channel! Have a safe and cautious ride!

I agree Chad, Temples in Thailand are so beautiful and serene. No Matter you are religious or not but once you go inside and sit there for a while, they start to draw you towards them. It is just an unexplainable thing which I have experienced too.

I did the Mae Hong Son loop on a 500cc Honda and loved it. I would recommend at least a 250cc bike. Wait until you hit the really tight mountain hairpin curves, that's where the extra power helps with climbing around those corners. Love seeing your adventure! Enjoy and be safe!

I drove a Benelli TNT 300 to the mountains north of Chiang Mai, it was really nice to have real tires and brakes there... Especially with packing of 320 kg / 705 pounds. One problem though was my lady that were afraid I would drive too fast, so back I was driving slow, downwards. Which led to overheated engine x-) , and it shut off! Had to cool the engine down 1.5 hours. Good lesson.

That was some solid rain... I live in Chiangmai, and have been wanting to do the loop for months. It will be soon, maybe next week. I have a Yamaha NMAX 155, and had originally planned to ride that. However, I just returned from a long trip down south to Ko Phayam, with stays in Hua Hin and Bangkok. Almost 3,000kms on that thing, and I am certain it's not for long rides. It will do it, but damn uncomfortable. So, for the Mae Hong Son ride I've decided to rent a V-Strom 650 or CB500. More comfortable and way more fun. No struggling up the hills for me! It'll be cool to see how the rest of your ride goes. I'll be watching from the comfort of my condo in Chiangmai...

I had to chuckle some. I've ridden the Pai road several times, and just about every time you run into rain as you climb into the mountains. Same as when going to Phitsanulok. We were caught in a downpour one time going to Phitsanulok, and eventually I just told the group let's go, it will dry out in about 15 minutes. Sure enough, once we got out of the mountain area it was beautiful and sunny, and we did dry out. I like your adventure character, because that certainly is needed in Thailand. Did the Mae Hong Song loop as well, a beautiful ride, but I was also on a 300cc Sym scooter, made a big difference. If you haven't gone to Phayao, I recommend it, and the older temples on the far side up in the mountains.

Hey CB.....Light rain will make the surface like an ice rink as all the crap just stays on the surface, heavy rain tends to wash all the oil,etc off the roads its the painted lines that are the most dangerous when descending roads like that in the wet!

I had the exact same conditions when I did the same ride in 2014. It was frikkin freezing and I had no rain coat. I made it to Pai though. Just saying Chad! It took two hours and a hot spring to defrost though. Admit I would have stopped if I had more time. Got to enjoy it - no point rushing.

thanks fro bringing us along; BTW Bangkok, I jump the Motorbike Taxis, they are pros and always get it done, no problems , no conflicts. Walking in Bangkok is another thing altogether, while walking down the sidewalk, you may well be over run by a speeding motor bike short cutting a traffic jam, then much like being in a Jason Borne movie, instantaneously you will need to develop Ninja skills in order to survive.
