Imagine if he made a dramatised movie depicting 9/11 where the terrorists are foiled and the planes land safely. People would be furious. However, there are people defending these movies that cannot put themselves in the shoes of the victims affected by these tragic events. "The Haunting of Sharon Tate is probably the best film I’ve ever seen; provides real insight into these shocking events." is one comment you can read on an article criticising the movie. "Real insight"?! These people actually think what happens in the movies is in some way "real" when it is trying to entertain people with the murder of real people by dramatising it.

I hate it when murderers are portrayed as having Dissaciative Identity Disorder in cinema. People with DID are no more likely to harm another person than a person who doesn't have it. If anything, people with DID are more likely to be victimized again, because people with DID are so commonly survivors of severe neglect and abuse during thier childhoods. I have had people react with fear, when I tell them that I have this. I had a roommate in a domestic violence shelter, who asked to be moved out of my room, as soon as she found out that I had it. I am not a danger to anyone, my behavior is pretty normal and consistent and I have no temper.

So, I read "If I Did It" for a class assignment (and btw, all sales of the book go to the Goldman family, and the cover even makes the word "If" smaller and has the subheadline "Confessions of the Killer"). And once you get to the actual murder part of the book, O.J. goes off on this weird little tangent where he starts recounting the murder, mentioning this accomplice named "Charlie", only to then end it with a sort of "Aha, gotcha, you thought I just confessed, didn't you?" And I'm wondering if the "Charlie" in there was supposed to be a reference to that. By the way, the ghostwriter for the book 100% believes O.J. did it, and thinks the "Charlie" part was just to trip up the reader. Also, it seems the movie totally messed up the actual facts of the case: After the recital, Nicole and her mother took the kids to a restaurant that Ron Goldman was a waiter at Mezzaluna Trattoria. Nicole's mother forgot her sunglasses, and while Goldman wasn't their waiter that night, since he had been friends with Nicole for six weeks up to their deaths, he agreed to bring over her glasses on his way home from his shift, at 9:33 PM. Oh, and according to Simpson, the argument they had at the recital was over what she was wearing, and her love life. Yeah, ironically he does a pretty terrible job at making the reader convinced that he DIDN'T do it.

The thing that really pisses me off about these true crime films that dramatize the life of the victim under the guise of “returning the power” is that they never had power in the first place. If they had any power over their circumstances, they wouldn’t be dead. At this point, when I hear “give power back to the victim” by creating these blatantly false vignettes of awareness and rebellion, I can’t help but to the think the director blames them for succumbing to their fate. Sharon Tate and Nicole Brown didn’t have the power. Their murderers took it from them and it can’t be returned. That’s the tragedy. It’s superficial to write a script that “gives them back their power” and then kills them anyway. At least Tarantino, in his crassness, was willing to rewrite history for the catharsis of abused parties.

Yeah, it's always a weird thing when actors you admire start appearing in garbage. Ray Milland won an Oscar in 1945 for playing an alcoholic in Billy Wilder's *The Lost Weekend* (see it if you haven't). He was a fairly big star throughout the 30's and 40's, appearing in really good films like *The Uninvited* (interestingly creepy old haunted house-film) and Wilder's directorial debut, *The Major and the Minor* (definitely an odd film, but...lol, mostly quite charming and witty; co-stars Ginger Rogers, who essentially can do no wrong). BUT THEN...by the 70's Milland is doing crap. He makes one film in particular, in 1972, called *The Thing With Two Heads* co-starring (absurdly) Rosie Grier, the NFL player. The film's synopsis from Wikipedia: "...Milland plays a racist brain surgeon with a terminal illness who transplants his head onto a healthy body, an African-American prisoner." The poster must be seen to be believed. Another example of The Mighty falling hard would be (in my opinion) Carrol Baker. Carrol Baker is one of the most genuinely talented actresses to ever work in cinema. Her starring debut film was Elia Kazan's *Baby Doll* and she kills it like few other young actresses ever have. Her performance left me awestruck. After that she's in George Stevens' masterpiece *Giant* (sharing scenes with James Dean) and for the rest of the 50's and 60's she's doing reasonably good work, working with directors like William Wyler and John Ford. And so this is why it's so disheartening (for me, at least) to see that by the 70's she's in Italy, making trashy giallos with gratuitous nude scenes and everything. I know giallo has its fans (Tarantino, for instance), but personally it's never been my thing. Sometimes I'll be watching John Ford's *Cheyenne Autumn* or something, and I'll think, "Goddamn, in 10 years this amazing, gifted actress is going to be languishing in giallo mediocrity...." Late in her career Baker does appear in a few much better films (Fincher gave her a supporting role in *The Game* back in 1997), but not many. The bright side is- the *great* work these actors do is immortal. It's not like we lose it when they unfortunately also do trashy work. But it's never not disorienting to see them IN...trash (like Suvari is here in this vid). Just another reminder, actors' careers have peaks and valleys. Even great actors.

I remember one actor was asked why he was doing such good movies and then bad movies in between, and he basically said he needed the money and wouldn't be waiting for the 'good role' to come because maybe it wouldn't. Just a few of them have the good luck to be selective in their work, and even then it's not entirely up to them.
@mcnultyssobercompanion63725 жыл бұрын
@@unouni2548 Well said. I actually was just watching a video JoBlo put out on Cuba Gooding Jr. (JoBlo puts out surprisingly good vids on cinema), and it was interesting- and unfortunate- how the "quality" of his roles "fluctuated" (for various reasons) in the years following his Oscar win. Acting is a particularly brutal art in that actors are not (unless they're capable of writing roles for themselves) *in direct control* OF their art. Even the most successful actors are essentially at the mercy of what they're offered, or what they can find. It's tough. I think an actor who has been making extremely wise choices in recent years is Adam Driver. If you look at his filmography the last 7-8 years you see major blockbusters intertwined with fantastic little indie films. And he's fostered relationships with influential indie filmmakers like Jim Jarmusch and Noah Baumbach, which will likely pay creative dividends for years. Basically Driver will make one giant film for the paycheck, and then make several small indie films for the soul. For that, I respect him very much. And while I'm at it...lol, he *was fucking robbed* of a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for Scorsese's "Silence". That scene on the beach? "No! Take me!" Amazing. Don't even get me started on "Silence", lol...A tragically neglected film. In my strong opinion.

@@Chris-ft2yx lol..thanks, I appreciate that. :) Although I can't believe how long these comments of mine were...Still, it's nice to see the few dozen "likes". Amusing postscript: the Covid lockdown happened not long after my first comment here, and I subsequenrly started watching a lot more films as a result, like most everyone else, and along the way I actually *got kind of into* Italian giallo films. I now feel bad I was so vicious in my appraisal of them up above. I mean- they're trash, no doubt, lol...but they're *frequently really well directed* trash. Many of them, to my humbling surprise, are even littered with actors giving quite good performances. The Italian director Sergio Martino is the one I've found I like the most. His film "What Have You Done With Our Daughters?" was the one that really surprised me. After that I started sampling more of the genre, and suddenly I realized why it has so many fans. All in all, ten months ago I totally spoke out of turn- I was clearly criticizing a film genre I knew much less about than I thought. Thanks again.

Using real crime scene footage? That's disgusting. I remember liking most of The Black Klansman, until the end. They showed legit snuff porn footage of that poor protestor woman who was hit by the car and murdered when that piece of shit drove through the crowd. I didn't want to see that. I've been avoiding the footage. I dont need to physically see someone die to know that it's horrible. And how dare you use someone's horrible death as a little clip at the very end of the movie. It wasnt even about her. Also, there was absolutely no warning that we were about to see someone literally die, in real life. I started retching and having a panic attack in the theater and had to ask my bf when it was okay to look at the screen again. I don't want to see that shit. Reading about it is bad enough. And: she. Was. A. Person. Dont play her death over and over to an audience of millions just for your gain. She deserves some damn dignity and her family deserves privacy

@ladyshaylala38704 жыл бұрын
Super late to the video and it may have already been brought up, but my US History teacher in hs told us that apparently after the trial OJ wrote a whole book about the murder that included a ton of sensitive details that he shouldn't have known. It was basically him saying "oh I didn't kill her but if I HAD this is how I would have done it" and they couldn't retry him due to double jeopardy. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the book but I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find thru google

WARNING! Daniel Farrands has yet another one in post production! He seriously has a new film on the way called American Boogeywoman, based on the life of serial killer Aileen Wuornos. I read the plot synopsis and thought "Oh my God, I actually feel insulted on Wuornos's behalf, why even use her name in this?" I researched her for a paper back in college and honestly, the inaccuracies are loaded into the synopsis. Here's the IMDB description for American Boogeywoman: Based on Aileen Wuornos's early life, America's most notorious female serial killer, back in 1976 a young Aileen arrives in Florida searching for a new life that will help her escape her tragic past, marries a wealthy Yacht Club president and has the chance to start again as part of Florida's high society. But tormented by inner demons she surrenders to her murderous impulses and wreaks havoc in the peaceful seaside community of Deland, Florida.

Just an FYI to clarify, Mena Suvari hasn't been in a lot of projects since she was blacklisted by Harvey Weinstein. Also, Kris Jenner was married to Caitlyn Jenner, formerly Bruce, at the time this happened. Edit: I got Mena Suvari confused with Mira Sorvino. Sorvino was the one blacklisted by Weinstein.

I actually didn't realize she was in the Weinstein camp, that's even more depressing to me
@mcnultyssobercompanion63725 жыл бұрын
Suvari actually has worked...very steadily, since 1999. I'm hardly a scholar on Weinstein's crimes (which are clearly voluminous). And it's entirely possible he came on to her as he did countless other women. But I'm just not personally aware of any black-listing taking place. If you look at her filmography, between film and television, she actually has appeared in projects, a lot of them. Pretty consistently. I just personally never saw Suvari's name attached to any allegations. But, again, I'm not an expert.

McNulty's Sober Companion I apologize. You're correct. I got Mira Sorvino and Mena Suvari confused.
@mcnultyssobercompanion63725 жыл бұрын
@@angelwings1979 Ah, got it. No need to apologize. :) I was sincerely curious IF Suvari was a victim as well. Who knows. It's quite horrible what happened to Sorvino. Her Oscar win for *Mighty Aphrodite* was well deserved (the supporting actor categories are USUALLY less a cause for outrage than others...). It's a VERY idiosyncratic- though quite skillful- performance. And so...it's really tragic. Who knows what kind of great work Sorvino would have done. She's certainly capable. Weinstein is basically the antichrist of cinema.

A rather skeevy movie about 2 Canadian serial killers (one being the title character), played by 2 Americans - Misha Collins (who regrets doing it entirely) and Laura Prepon - directed by an American and filmed in the US. Best part? They made one or said seiral killers an abuse victim when she very famously wasn't. Basically the whole thing is a dumpster fire

I may be mistaken, but this guy’s films sounds a lot like An Italian cartoon that was made about the Titanic disaster but instead of an iceberg being the cause of the sinking, it was sentient sharks with torpedoes who were working in league with the main human antagonist. And instead of sinking with a tremendous loss of life, in this bizarre cartoon universe an overly sized and very friendly octopus comes in time to hold the ship together so it doesn’t break up until all passengers and crew are safely off. In the end, they even pull a fake death scene for the octopus, but look, he’s perfectly fine! I wish I were making this abomination up, but every word of it is true.
