Sonoff recently announced the Sonoff NSPanel, a Smart Switch with a touch display that allows you to control all of your smart home devices in one room all from one central smart home panel. It features a touch display, esp32 and a Nextion Display, works with Home Assistant and has the potential to be flashed with firmware like ESPHome or Tasmota. But, have there been any shortcuts taken with the Sonoff NSPanel and just how good is it?

A few more sensors like motion-sensor, proximity for the dimming of the panel itself and light level would make this a no-brainer. Home-Assistant compatibility provided...

Agree, lux & humidity sensor too. Minimise the amount of sensor devices needed, which are usually battery as well. Motion sensor as you say, and a nightlight mode to barely illuminate the area by the switch (love the ones on the Ring smoke alarms)

Man, I wish Sonoff should realise their market position and worked more tightly with Home Assistant. Imagine there was an option to control HA entities -- whew, they would sold out immediately. I mean, if there ever is an ESPhome sketch we could use to flash it, I'll definitely try it out.

I totally agree! Imagine this switch with a cloud-free firmware and no need of a Neutral *wire. Wouldn't everyone here buy at least one of them? Yeah, every company wants to have their own "ecosystem" but making a flexible product would make the product even popular... All tech-products have a small lifespan due to rapid advance of technology, so why not make your products available to everyone ?

The need for a neutral wire at the light switch is a real killer for older homes where only the live wire is present at the switch. That's a shame because the panel looks awesome with real potential if/when it can be fully integrated with Home Assistant local control.

Problem is, without a neutral wire it either has to do one of two things: 1. Be a dimmer, and only dim to 1%, so that it doesn't shut off altogether... This wouldn't allow it to run the screen anymore though when your lights are "off". This is how most switches that don't require a neutral wire work. 2. Have the switches do nothing, and be "always on", so that it always has power, and then instead you'd likely need to use smart bulbs and have the switches control them. This is more doable, but it forces you to buy smart bulbs to make it work, which immediately ruins its sellability. Either way, it wouldn't work for a panel like this, and sadly, neutral wires are just required to get smart devices to properly work, since they need to be always on.

What is a huge issue for this is that most homes, at least where I live, have their light switches about 1m-1,20m from the floor. These panels look awsome but if you are looking and reaching down all the time it gets old real fast. So it might be a direct drop in, but in a lot of cases it would be worthwhile to move the actual switch upwards. Depending on the wall type this is not always easy.

Tell them they're about to get a customer with a ton of orders as soon as this thing drops. 10/10 exactly what I was looking for in a smart switch. Controls lights through panel, has alternative functionality tied to it, can still be used on app...and if turned off, doesn't disable the device. God damn. Finally. Thank you for making this video. I'm adding this to my favorites, following you, and 100% buying this the moment it drops.

I just received mine, which I ordered in November on Kickstarter. I didn't turn it on yet. My first impression: I like the color, it looks good and it seems to be professionally produced. My first impression of the two buttons is not so good. If I press each button exactly in the middle of that button then they work fine. But if I press a button near the outside frame then it does not switch, or maybe only if I press hard. And this is the situation with a brand new device. I am not confident those switches will work reliable, especially over years. Maybe they will address this mechanical problem in the later production version.

motion sensor in the bedroom.... that's why they didn't do that. would be turned on for most by their movement in their sleep. adding that light to a room can mess with some while sleeping. Though the option to ADD a motion sensor to trigger that response might be better, to allow for the angle of the sensor to be adjusted.

Not really a valid reason when they could add the option to disable the motion sensor for example in a certain room, or they could have time schedules for when it was active.

Good to point out that the device needs a neutral but it's perhaps worth stating that this is likely to be a significant barrier to use here in the UK. Most homes have a live-loop for lights with no neutral available at the switch. Some of the more enthusiastic of home automation enthusiasts might think they can export a neutral feed from a nearby power socket but that can introduce significant hidden dangers, especially to anyone performing work on the electrical installation in the future. Other opinions are available, of course, but I don't think it's realistic (or safe) to suggest that a device like this is a DIY install for the vast majority of UK home owners.
@Meza201
@Meza201 2 жыл бұрын
For UK homes... Could you put a sonoff mini in the ceiling rose for doing switching (via WiFi) , and then repurpose the 2-core switch cable as a live + neutral supply to the wall display? (rather than it being a live + switched live)
@melliflousbufo
@melliflousbufo 2 жыл бұрын
Good suggestion but there are a couple of regulatory hurdles to overcome within UK legislation. The first is around "maintenance free" junction boxes - anything hidden (behind a wall or in a roof cavity) needs to have maintenance-free connections and it would be difficult to suggest that a separate switched low-voltage device satisfies that. The next is around wiring - you could certainly repurpose existing ways but you would need to sheath each connection with an appropriate colour, including the outlet from the distribution board. Bear in mind, also, that most UK lighting circuits are rings so this means re-purposing and re-sheathing every node in the circuit. The goal is laudable - that any future electrician sees a black or blue line and assumes that this is a switched live return rather than a potentially live feed. What you're suggesting is perfectly reasonable but the UK wiring regulations are especially stringent and (in my opinion) with good reason.

Are the 2 physical switches customisable? In that for a room with just one standard light they can be on/off, or one button to toggle on/off the other to be used as a virtual switch for another device (room lamp on smart plug)? Or with a dimmer, is one button for dim and the other brighten? If these can definitely be flashed then they are a game changer for my setup, where neutral wires are available anyway.

I have a 2 switch Brilliant switch in my foyer, and I can get almost 8 of these compared to the one Brilliant switch I have. I really want to back this, but my experiences with Kickstarter campaigns, have definitely not been the best!

I saw a review of the US model yesterday and was a little surprised to see it being only 2 amp. That makes it a bit too risky in my mind. The us format looks nicer and the huge square EU model wouldn't fit the wallboxes here. I'd end up having to sort an external box which isn't optimal. Other than that, once it is usable on esphome, I would be very tempted and will likely grab a couple for experimentation. Wiring up a humidity sensor might be the first project.

Believe it or not, the US version has the same screen size, just rotated the other way

Would this work with WiFi GU10 downlighters? Is it Tuya Smart Life compatible or just ewelink? Looking at getting some WiFi downlight bulbs and would love to know whether this could control them

Whoohoo!!!! Yup … would love to drop one of these into a few rooms here at home and hopefully the KS will have them at a good price. I agree that I don’t like it when established companies use KS to do a first run of a product but that’s their choice and if it offends me then I don’t have to back it but it’s pretty and shiny so I know that I will as soon as I can find it on there. :-)

Control Hue groups of bulbs? Shame it's not available in white, as black doesn't fit well at times... Shame it hasn't got a light sensor so it brightens/dims according to brightness of room.

Hmmm... So - yes - this is obviously an interesting proposition. But for 74$ is it competitive against a 2-3yr old budget tablet of phone? Probably not, especially if the tactile feel of those two switches means little to you. In fact, there are a ton of ways one can either reproduce or surpass this. And you don't even need Home Assistant installed necessarily - you could use something like TouchPortal + HomeAssistant and/or MQTT plugin instead, and make your own custom skin. Also, no need for a neutral wire (which is something a few EU homes struggle with). That said, Kudos to Sonoff for realizing there is a market for something like this in what seems like a very decent effort.

Hey does it tell you how long you let the light on because I am a watts and kilo watts fighter meaning if my bill comes at a price abnormal, than I add up the hours I used the utilities at home and add it all up a watts cost 0.001 USD a Lifht bulb uses 70watts multiply the watts with the price of a watts an that your total use . So I want to know if this device does counts the time you left anything on.

This kind of price for a light switch is hard to justify I think, especially as it might look dated after just a few years. Might make more sense for commercial settings. Whole home display I can justify, smart automations for each room are good, but a display for each room is putting form over function I think.
