What is a huge issue for this is that most homes, at least where I live, have their light switches about 1m-1,20m from the floor. These panels look awsome but if you are looking and reaching down all the time it gets old real fast. So it might be a direct drop in, but in a lot of cases it would be worthwhile to move the actual switch upwards. Depending on the wall type this is not always easy.

The need for a neutral wire at the light switch is a real killer for older homes where only the live wire is present at the switch. That's a shame because the panel looks awesome with real potential if/when it can be fully integrated with Home Assistant local control.
@EverythingSmartHome3 жыл бұрын
Totally hear ya!
@MarisaClardy3 жыл бұрын
Problem is, without a neutral wire it either has to do one of two things: 1. Be a dimmer, and only dim to 1%, so that it doesn't shut off altogether... This wouldn't allow it to run the screen anymore though when your lights are "off". This is how most switches that don't require a neutral wire work. 2. Have the switches do nothing, and be "always on", so that it always has power, and then instead you'd likely need to use smart bulbs and have the switches control them. This is more doable, but it forces you to buy smart bulbs to make it work, which immediately ruins its sellability. Either way, it wouldn't work for a panel like this, and sadly, neutral wires are just required to get smart devices to properly work, since they need to be always on.

Can this control devices already in Google Home, or does it only control Sonoff products?
@melliflousbufo3 жыл бұрын
Good to point out that the device needs a neutral but it's perhaps worth stating that this is likely to be a significant barrier to use here in the UK. Most homes have a live-loop for lights with no neutral available at the switch. Some of the more enthusiastic of home automation enthusiasts might think they can export a neutral feed from a nearby power socket but that can introduce significant hidden dangers, especially to anyone performing work on the electrical installation in the future. Other opinions are available, of course, but I don't think it's realistic (or safe) to suggest that a device like this is a DIY install for the vast majority of UK home owners.
@Meza2013 жыл бұрын
For UK homes... Could you put a sonoff mini in the ceiling rose for doing switching (via WiFi) , and then repurpose the 2-core switch cable as a live + neutral supply to the wall display? (rather than it being a live + switched live)
@melliflousbufo3 жыл бұрын
Good suggestion but there are a couple of regulatory hurdles to overcome within UK legislation. The first is around "maintenance free" junction boxes - anything hidden (behind a wall or in a roof cavity) needs to have maintenance-free connections and it would be difficult to suggest that a separate switched low-voltage device satisfies that. The next is around wiring - you could certainly repurpose existing ways but you would need to sheath each connection with an appropriate colour, including the outlet from the distribution board. Bear in mind, also, that most UK lighting circuits are rings so this means re-purposing and re-sheathing every node in the circuit. The goal is laudable - that any future electrician sees a black or blue line and assumes that this is a switched live return rather than a potentially live feed. What you're suggesting is perfectly reasonable but the UK wiring regulations are especially stringent and (in my opinion) with good reason.

Are the 2 physical switches customisable? In that for a room with just one standard light they can be on/off, or one button to toggle on/off the other to be used as a virtual switch for another device (room lamp on smart plug)? Or with a dimmer, is one button for dim and the other brighten? If these can definitely be flashed then they are a game changer for my setup, where neutral wires are available anyway.

I just received mine, which I ordered in November on Kickstarter. I didn't turn it on yet. My first impression: I like the color, it looks good and it seems to be professionally produced. My first impression of the two buttons is not so good. If I press each button exactly in the middle of that button then they work fine. But if I press a button near the outside frame then it does not switch, or maybe only if I press hard. And this is the situation with a brand new device. I am not confident those switches will work reliable, especially over years. Maybe they will address this mechanical problem in the later production version.

Hmmm... So - yes - this is obviously an interesting proposition. But for 74$ is it competitive against a 2-3yr old budget tablet of phone? Probably not, especially if the tactile feel of those two switches means little to you. In fact, there are a ton of ways one can either reproduce or surpass this. And you don't even need Home Assistant installed necessarily - you could use something like TouchPortal + HomeAssistant and/or MQTT plugin instead, and make your own custom skin. Also, no need for a neutral wire (which is something a few EU homes struggle with). That said, Kudos to Sonoff for realizing there is a market for something like this in what seems like a very decent effort.

I saw a review of the US model yesterday and was a little surprised to see it being only 2 amp. That makes it a bit too risky in my mind. The us format looks nicer and the huge square EU model wouldn't fit the wallboxes here. I'd end up having to sort an external box which isn't optimal. Other than that, once it is usable on esphome, I would be very tempted and will likely grab a couple for experimentation. Wiring up a humidity sensor might be the first project.

I have a 2 switch Brilliant switch in my foyer, and I can get almost 8 of these compared to the one Brilliant switch I have. I really want to back this, but my experiences with Kickstarter campaigns, have definitely not been the best!

Wish I could try one of those Brilliant switches, we don't get them here unfortunately!

Whoohoo!!!! Yup … would love to drop one of these into a few rooms here at home and hopefully the KS will have them at a good price. I agree that I don’t like it when established companies use KS to do a first run of a product but that’s their choice and if it offends me then I don’t have to back it but it’s pretty and shiny so I know that I will as soon as I can find it on there. :-)

Totally agree!! Look forward to seeing how many you pick up!
