7:00 this type of packing foam is *incredibly* strong and stable under pressure. It’s often used in zoos for faux landscaping, support and decorative rock work because of how surprisingly resilient it is! It makes perfect sense that it would be able to withstand a fish tank as well, because the weight is distributed evenly on both the top and bottom. That tank isn’t going *anywhere* hahaha

Qotw: Bettas are ridiculously hardy. I've rescued two that previous owners had in tall, skinny vases with no heat or filtration. One is going on 4 years old, he was full grown when I got him, and I believe that lady had him for a year. The other is maybe 2, but her previous owner literally just sat her in a vase outside on top of their trash dumpster. I'm glad I found it before the trash truck came around.

I think they’re only hardy if their genetics don’t suck. I had two that didn’t even live a whole year, one in a 5 gallon, one in a 10, i fed frozen food instead of pellets, I did weekly water changes, I tested the water often, I gave them live plants and still they sadly weren’t alive long

The fish "tub" is brilliant. Substrate and or gravel being so important for the food web, but just as importantly it stops the fish kicking up all the muck, which is what happens if you don't put Substrate in the tub

04:11 The bottom with the roots visible through the glass seems to be what I am doing in one of my tanks. I used the coarsest gravel and basically started by feeding my plants with liquid fertilizer (the theory was that I did not want to keep inserting tabs into the substrate. I wanted to feed my root feeder plants such as sword plants through the water column and the way to get that done was coarse gravel). After the tank started aging the detritus filled up the spaces in-between the gravel and added the nutrients. I do less liquid fertilizer feedings these days Normally i use sand, but it was too easy. I wanted to challenge myself and experimented with a coarse gravel only tank. I miss sand, but I don,t regret doing it

QoTW: Guppies! They are so easy to take care of, even the really fancy ones. Mine, before I moved and gave them away, overstocked my tank, yet they somehow managed to hit that sweet spot in my planted tank of keeping they population stable. And I had 2 cory cats and a ton of snails that hitched a ride on my plants. My plain grey cory was slightly bigger than my thumb and I got him as a baby. My Albino wasn't far behind in size too. (I got him a few months later as my grey was the only they had.)

A fair sized tub from a farm store (like you'd use to water horses) can be planted and stocked with goldfish or fathead minnows in colder places. I'm in PA, and when it starts freezing, I put a small pond heater in, just keeps the water from freezing. Def need cold hardy species, but elodea Canadensis, and American lotus, as well as some water lilies are fine. If you have a sun room, a small tub works well.

For indoor purposes a patio pond in a large plant pot is great. I've got one in the corner of my living room with a bunch of great plants growing out of it. Really brightens up the room. Especially when the light is on.
@spiderlee5585
@spiderlee5585 24 күн бұрын
Yes indeed. So long as you have a good, consistent source of water movement and at least 100 gallons worth of water in the "deep end" of your tub or pond, most goldfish and minnow species will overwinter just fine in temperate areas. Obviously, uh, be more considerate if you're in the blizzard ground zero or a much colder area though. A tub pond in the center of a little glass greenhouse comes to mind, though it's hard to tell whose idea it is--human or the plants.

I was given 6 "polar blue parrots". A about 3 years ago, my furnace decided to stop working on the coldest days (-25) of the year and it was almost 40 hours before repair man arrived. Although I did everything I could, moved as many fish as I could into buckets to a warmer space, some tanks got down to 38-40ish degrees (f) (entire house was down to high 40s) I thought all the parrots died.... nope.... once the furnace was fixed and the temps rose all 6 were still alive... and still are. Yes, I was shocked -- tropical fish surviving 38-40 degree (F).

A hale and hearty greeting to my FTR community!! I'm in a hurry this am so I'll just wish everyone an amazingly awesome week!! ✌️ QotW: after keeping Medaka I'm going to say they're probably the easiest, most hassle free fish. If you're inside and your house doesn't freeze 🥶, you are totally fine without a heater, they'll take any prepared micro pellet or flake food as long as it's powdery or just really small, they can do a totally planted tank or just a bare bottom, they reproduce but not excessively like guppies, I have then in tanks with plants and no filter and tanks with filter, if you live in a mild climate you can keep them outdoors in tubs year round and they're pretty easy to find and the older varieties are pretty affordable now. You haven't seen a beautiful fish till you've seen platinum Medaka outside in a sunny tub, they absolutely glow!!

QOTW: Honey Gourami/Clown pleco. Honey Gourami because I have never had one die on me even after many tank scares and no one picks on them in my tank, and they dont pick on other tank mates in my experience so far with community tanks. As for the pleco, i have a little story: when i was 12 i had a 50 gallon community tank with a Clown Pleco for 4 years that I NEVER got to see after introducing it to my tank. Then, I had many fish in my aquarium die after the lid with little holes in my fish food container fell off in my hand dumping a WHOLE thing of food into the water. I hoped the filter would kick in and the fish wouldnt die but they did. I siphoned out all the water, and around 3 weeks to a month later, I made preparations to empty out all the decorations and gravel to empty out the tank to see if i wanted to start again. I emptied out the gravel and washed it in my back yard, and i did the same with all the tank decorations (one being a sunkin hollowed pirate ship). When i finished, i got all the decorations and put them back into the tank. The moment i put the pirate ship in the tank the vibration cause my clown pleco hidden inside to flop around inside the tank. Fortunately i had water in a bucket sitting around over 24 hours and put it in the bucket of water in the off chance I wanted to redo the aquarium. I quickly filled the tank and put water conditioner and put it back inside. I later redid my tank and it lived for 5 more years no problem. This was also before I knew about the water cycle n stuff so idk how it survived all that.

QOTW: Kuhli loaches! I had a tank I took down and it sat for a month on the floor in a corner with just the mulmy substrate and tiny bit of water I hadn't taken the time yet to clean out. I happened to see movement one day and it was a kuhli loach skirting along the substrate! The poor lil guy had been hiding in there for a month with almost no water, no food, no heat, no aeration! I felt so bad for him that I had missed him when I moved all the other fish out but he was a trooper and held on despite my negligence and the terrible conditions. edit: typo fix

Livestock water tanks make the best ponds. If you compare them to the cost of an aquarium, they're usually about $1 a gallon. Sometimes you can find them for half the price. I think my 300 gallon cost about $150 when I bought it about a year and half ago.

I have 4 tanks and only my 8.5 gallon Opae Ula tank with 200+ in it has never crashed. I do not have to do water changes and once the algae started growing on the side do not have to feed them. I do give them treats but do not have too. I only need to top off water as it goes down. I have a heater for them and a sponge filter that I have not touched in 2 years. So yea, that tank is my favorite tank.

My favorite easiest fish to keep is Medakas, throw them in a pond, they'll happily breed there, throw them in a 10g, happily breed there, too. Don't have a heater or chiller? Good. They do not care and will be fine when that pond freezes over as long as it doesn't become a block of solid ice, they however will stop breeding at around 18°C, also, you want to put them into a tropical community? Absolutely can do, they don't mind temperatures up to 30°C wich is about 2°C warmer then the recommendation for tropical communities (28°C). Hard water? Soft water? Medaka doesn't care, they'll just ask 'where spawning mop at?'. I love them. They come in so many different colors, too. Miyuki (White with Shimmer), Platinum (plain white), Koi variants (tricolor, bicolor, yellow-white, orange-white, mixed with black spots...), etc. Funfact: The fish on the ISS are also Medaka, Platinum Medaka to be exact, they got transported up as eggs to study the development of fish in space. I know i'm fangirling, tho i am not sorry! They're awesome. :D

I have a 20g planted tank right in front of a west-facing window (I, uh, ran out of room for tanks) but I painted the back black, loaded it with red root floaters, and have my biggest house plants (monstera, peace lily) growing out of the back. That is, a ton of the natural light is blocked - with the exception of a patch that gets in through the cleared feeding ring, but a couple nerite snails take care of the resulting algae patch on the glass. I've gotten some of the most beautiful pictures of tiny golden light rays shooting into this tank through the floaters when the hygger is off. Limited window light has turned into my *favorite* place to put a tank.

Got a beautiful pair of Rams for my other tank - I loved them. Then the female just disappeared; then over half of my neons just died; then the male started acting aggressive and was bleeding from a patch on his head; then he died too that night. I think they had a parasite that wiped out most of the tank. Now all I'm left with are 8 neons and a couple of Ottos. :(

On the cat-arapaima situation. Cats reflexes are way quicker than usual prey since they're "apex predators". This is why pet cats don't get eaten by snakes, or injured by big rats, foxes, wolves. Their reaction speed generally keeps them out of danger. I don't know how fast an Arapaima could strike but it would have to be faster than snakers/scorpions or crocs.

Two months later I have 4 males (pretty sure one was bullied to death), 4 females (pretty sure one passed after birth), and dozens of TBD. The only work and stress their tank has brought me was in the form of plants. The fish are just chilling. Though I suppose my rice fish, neons, betta, and snails are the same. But they aren't going to reproduce forever like the guppies will, so I'll give the prize to them.

Tbh the hardiest fish I ever kept where my snakeheads. Depending on the species they don't even require heating, they're not the biggest community fish once they're adults so if you keep them alone in a big enough tank you don't really need filtration (especially since they breath air anyways), mine always ate frozen food without problems... never had any complaints. They do like to re-model so planting can be a little difficult, but otherwise 10/10 fish imo.

9:56 me with white cube 2x2 ikea kallax and 90l (around 110-120kg with all stuff) fish tank on it 💀 Yes I agree, it is very bad idea especially with chest of drawers. At least Kallax has a section in the middle and is screwed to the wall. It will stand until water gets on it. So every time I change the water I put tissues on it from all sides 🤣. I use it because my budget is very tight and I was the person who bought a goldfish and put it in a 25 liter aquarium💅. Later I realized that the aquarium urgently needs to be changed and finding a stand is a problem especially when you buying cheap fish tank from Facebook without a stand.

I still don't have a fish tank so I don't know what the easiest fish to take care of is for me. Growing up we had a small sucker fish of some sort that seemed to always out live the other fish in the tank, probably some sort of small plecco, it didn't need much attention if I remember correctly.

My first thought when I think about having a tub like that is mosquitoes. It's gorgeous, and I'd love to have it, but that ankle-biting aedes mosquito ain't no joke.
@michaellavella2377

The fish will eat them. Plus it'll attract dragonflies which will also eat them. A healthy pond won't increase your mosquito numbers and will likely lower them if they are a problem to start with.

QOTW: my green sunfish is wicked easy to care for. She eats anything I put in there, never been sick a day in her life, always lively and interactive. She lives in a 125 gal with an elephant trunk snake. She was meant to be a feeder but she’s a SURVIVOR. I think she and the snake gang up on the new feeder fish.

I live in Texas and recently got a 125 gallon tub for my turtles (it has a couple shallow ledges and a wonky shape which would be great for aquascaping too) If I ever rehome them...

From my experience harlequin rasboras, bronze/albino cories and bristlenose plecos are pretty hardy. I have not kept them but I heard paradise gourami and honey gourami are also hardy.

Being in south Louisiana when I see a pond like that all I can think of is mosquito breeding! I guess if you have the right fish they would eat the mosquito larvae?

qotw: albino bristlenose, just give them a nice stick and don't forget they're there. (I can't speak for other plecos but often the more invasive the species, the easier it is to keep alive.) Objectively: zebra mussels & kudzu! 🤣

QOTW: I've been most successful with guppies. Sold the babies. Endlers and Least Kilifish also did well and got babies, but not as good as the guppies; their babies weren't as hardy. Ember tetras are also good fish, if you dont want to deal with the babies. Personally, no matter what fish it is, I have much more succes buying fish from local fish store than online.

The guppies and mollies are the most easiest fish to take care of..you don't need to get other pair if you got a 3 or 4 female guppy with 1 male guppy.They make money for you🤑 and silver gaurami's too but it hard to make baby fish with them
