I had a mostly white female with bits of blue named Opal I fell in love with her colour and personality. Before I got her she was living in a tank full of females then she got 5 gal tank with 2 aquatic dwarf frogs and a hillstream loach they all got along well and she turned darker blue

I got a tiny goldfish when I was in school for biology class, something about observing behavior. It's been well over 10 years and several tanks now, and he's a big happy boi. People need to realize that goldfish can live long and healthy lives if they're looked after properly.

The person who set up the tank at 6:30 is teachable. +They did enough research to add a sponge filter and a heater. +They made a custom setup from parts - a good sign. It's not a 1 gallon kit. They can be convinced to change out and add things. + It's less overstocked than some first tanks. No pleco, and the goldfish isn't single-tail. There's hope. And they need some help.

I grow basil. It’s so difficult to grow from seed but I bought a small half dead plant at my local grocery store and did a hydroponic type setup with clay beads in a pot in one of my tanks. That plant took off! It’s huge now. You should definitely try it and there’s nothing better than fresh basil.

Hydroponics is fun. I’d recommend trying a different seed source for your basil or perhaps another variety. I prefer sweet basil. It’s always done well for me. Genovese is a little strong smelling for my taste, but it’s probably good for pesto.

I usually have zero expectations with beginners, but I'm glad they post their terrible mistakes looking for help, specifically so I can help them. Contrary to popular belief, most beginners learn more from patient advice givers than if they get lamb basted over being a beginner, which likely results in more benefit to their fish than if they feel like giving up.

There are no freshwater cephalopods. However, octopi have been known to leave saltwater enclosures and move to fresh water enclosures to get food. They can tolerate it for 30-60mins-ish iirc.

Qotw: If I could eat any carb I wanted to right now, I’d probably eat garlic bread. Fish tank updates: I caved and got a new betta for my 5g tank yesterday. He had been in the store for a while, and he appears to have been born missing most of his dorsal fin. There’s a little spindly nub of a dorsal fun, but his back does not show any signs of ever having a full dorsal fin. (Pretty much it looks like he’s bald) I’m hoping that he will do well and get along with his nerite snail companion!

For the weekly question- I existed sheerly off of naan & avocado for almost a month. Delicious, especially if you toast the naan so that it’s soft & warm. Currently sick at the moment, so it’s been instant ramen for a few days now, keeps me full- adding chicken & broccoli makes it tastier & much more delicious. Carbs are wonderful.

Basil is one of the easiest plants to grow with aquaponics. You could keep a healthy basil plant alive, indefinitely, in a 20 gallon tank. Basil, parsley, and mint are all EZ mode to grow either hydroponically, or with aquaponics.

I had bad luck with parsley and cilantro. My leaves always got tough. I tried tap water, filtered, distilled. Two different types of nutrients. It’s possible the seeds just weren’t good for hydroponics, but I’m sticking to soil for them. Hydroponics is so much fun if you like science and experimenting.

@@labachaterairlandesa I grow mine in rafts, with net pots and porous substrate. Cilantro and flat leaf parsley don't like wet feet, so I use Japanese parsley (Oenanthe javanica), also known as water celery. Basil and mint love wet feet as well.

Sorry for leaving multiple comments; I can't find my first to edit this on, but 7:04 I had a friend in childhood who's parents had one full reef aquarium and then several barren aquariums like this one. The fish were VERY well taken care of but there was no decoration. They're a big reason I didn't have fish as a kid because I saw how much maintenance it took and how much time the husband spent with the fish, but that's what all but one of his tanks looked like

So...funny thing, as a person that's been in the hobby 25+ years, the plain "nightmare" tank actually makes me think of 4 scenarios where that might not be the worst setup in the world. 1: It's a quarantine tank where you have new fish in quarantine before adding them to the tank to make sure they are not sick. 2: It's a hospital tank where you are treating fish sick with parasites, so you don't want a substrate that can make it harder to kill all the parasites, like worms, like camallanus cotti. 3: It's a conditioning tank where you are feeding a group of fish heavily with live food like blackworms and other things that could disappear into a substrate, before attempting to breed them. Not having plants and stuff makes sure the fish is full of eggs but most likely won't spawn until either they are moved to the tank where conditions are better for spawning, or a spawning mop is added. 4: It's your reserve tank you had on hand just in case something were to happen to your main tank...and something happened...gotta save the swimmy friends!

That “vegetarian paranha” you were talking about are called pacu. They have human like square teeth used for cracking open hard tree nuts in their native habitats, but when they are invasive and have nothing to eat, they turn to chomping on people. Specifically any dangly bits they can find (yes THOSE “dangly bits”).

sup chirs, re: basil... i had some 2-gallons jars with some java fern and java moss and i let them go wild with snails, and it qquuickly established an equilibrium with oregano and basil in rockwool cubes in net cups held up by chopsticks... it was no water changes clean in 4 weeks, i just had to trim roots and plants every week or so and the herbs were super productive. i never ever fed the setup and the snails handled all the algae -- dirted af of course, thanks for all the tips

if your friend show you a very sad fish tank, offer them some 'upgrades' with the excess cuttings from your own tanks. do it as good as you can. They'll eventually either get into fishkeeping /aquascaping properly or ask you to help him make it as good as yours

Best carb is by far white rice. You can fry it, put it in soup, wrap in nori, eat it plain, or make sushi. Best carb ever couldn’t live without it

Coming to the defense of the tank at 6:15 - it may not be aesthetically pleasing, but for a single black moor that's not awful. The smattering of gravel on the one side suggests to me that the keeper was informed that goldfish do better kept on bare bottom and tried to remove what could have been in there before, there's a heater and the bubble filter is a gentle option for filtration for clumsy fish, no decor for it to get hurt on. Can't speak for the other two fish in the tank since I can't ID and an open top isn't optimal for mystery snails since they can accidentally travel outside and die if they can't find their way back to the water, but I would say if it was just the black moor that it wouldn't be bad. Not pretty, but far from the worst we've seen here. Another fun FTR, we'll see ya next week! 😊

Get to the grocery store or your local hardware store, go into the garden section and get you some basil. It is easy to grow, great starter terrestrial plant. Get some potting soil, upgrade its pot, water daily, 8 hours of sunlight or grow-light recommended. Trim often to make it bushy. Basil is great, I have grown many different kinds.

my former friend use to have 3 or 4 goldfish in a small probably 3 gallon tank. the water was cloudy and one of the fish was blind. i was surprised to learn they've had them for years. its not like they couldnt afford a better tank as they had a lot of money. they did have a filter but it quite literally was dripping a drop every 30 seconds they never cleaned it im surprised they lived so long

I grow basil and have a new one each year come up from the seeds before. They grow well in pond water so you should have a great basil garden. Remember to trim the seed heads unless you want your basil to make the seeds! :)

Don't know of any freshwater octopi known to science, let alone in the hobby, and I can’t imagine they’d be that big either! And macroalgae is actually easier to care for than corals since they aren't as finicky or demanding, though most people only use it for refugiums

The name of "good vibes" piranha is Pacu, is natural from Brasil, here we have "versions" for indoors aquariums witch they reach 18 cm in adult size. I have they in my aquarium, they are lovable fishes and very pacific! Like the piranhas they live in groups, they dont like living alone, my aquarium isnt that big, because of that, i have only 3, but if you have a big aquarium like 200l or bigger, they will like live in groups of six or more.
