I suppose if you're a Jaffa warrior who's used to using Ring Platforms, the concept of a parachute would sound like utter suicide.

Jaffa1. The Tau'ri are surely undefeatable. Jaffa 2. Be careful where you speak such blasphemy! Jaffa 1. When entering battle they jump out of their flying craft from great heights, they do not use the rings. Jaffa 2. That seems unwise. Jaffa 1. They land unharmed and ready for battle. Jaffa 2. It maybe apocryphal, but there is a story from World War II in which a British officer asks for volunteers from his Gurkha unit to jump out of the plane: he gets only a few hands raised, so puzzled, he asks what happened to legendary Gurkha bravery. Someone says to him, "they did not know they would be getting parachutes";)

The version I heard was that they volunteered but asked for the plane to fly as low and slow as possible to lessen the chance of injury, before being told about parachutes.
@zarabada6125
@zarabada6125 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely apocryphal. From the start of WW II the British had an extensive training programme for paratroopers before their first jump in battle conditions. To start with, they would do ground based training on how to safely exit the plane and how to land. Then they had a series of practice jumps (one contemporary account I read said his unit had 9 practice jumps before they were certified for a battlefield drop). Sending untrained troops into a parachute drop over enemy territory would be insane. Assuming that they all operated their parachutes correctly, you would still get a high number of injuries from bad landings. Not only do you lose a soldier from your operation, your whole unit becomes less mobile as you take care of your wounded.

@@zarabada6125 "Assuming that they all operated their parachutes correctly, you would still get a high number of injuries from bad landings" This. Teal'c at the moment when they were discussing about jumping had a look very much like a soldier in my former army unit. In '03 while we were deployed to Iraq, we received a comp ride in a CH-47 Chinook helicopter as payment for a task we did for this aviation unit. This soldier was a 6'5", corn fed, hulk from Oklahoma of whom we took to calling "Big Country"... who despised flying. Everyone was just having a good 'ol time except for Big Country, he just sat there white knuckled. Then came the best part of the flight, something they called a Zero G Drop. The chopper ascended to an extremely high altitude then cut the engines. Everyone floated up from their seats for a few seconds, the pilot started the rotors again and we flew off just a 100 or so feet off the ground. Big Country was pretty white before the flight, he was now damn near transparent with a look on his face of utter terror. We all had good laugh at his expense after.

To be fair, the Goa'uld rarely invent anything. 99.9% of everything they use is scavenged off of everyone else. Parachutes don't last long enough to be scavenged off of dead races, rotting away too quickly, and the still living ones either aren't advanced enough, or have avoided being conquered.

They have a base with portal to other planets and they KNOW there are hostiles on other side and entire base has personnel numbering just 47. Given some of those have to be science and support staff, I shudder to think how many guards they had. No wonder the base was overrun. SGC is also a secret and they have a literal mountain of people with guns to keep any danger from getting off base. Who thought an abandoned power plant in middle of frozen tundra was sufficient security?

Clearly O'Neil is not Riker. It took 21 seconds for the first person to jump after the gear was deployed, and it took another 20 seconds for O'Neil (last man out) to jump after Marina Sirtis. This means that Marina would be nearly a mile from where the gear landed and O'Neil would be nearly as far away from Marina. Over snowing mountainous terrain, I guess it's a good thing she made arrangements in case they got separated. There is a reason when they do real combat jumps like this, everyone goes out as quickly as possible. When you're moving at over 100 knots, you are covering MANY feet per second.

Oh yea, I get what your saying, and I understand. In an episode of Battlestar Galactica they jumped the ship near a planet with zero orbital velocity. As the ship fell through the atmosphere it launched it's fighters then jumped away before hitting the ground. The science advisor to the show said it was completely 100% impossible to pull off a maneuver like that. The ship would just break up, because at those kinds of speeds the air would behave more like a solid than a gas. The science guy said to do it anyway because it would be very cool. It was. Sometimes you just have to do the impossible for more action or drama. It is fiction after all. The entire story line is a "lie".

As someone who went through airborne school, it's a good thing Teal'c is superhuman and has a symbiote to heal him quick. If you've never done it before and land wrong using a non steerable chute you're gonna break something. Even then a staff sergeant I knew with 50+ jumps broke an ankle landing wrong. @@epicstyle1000 In Siberia you can actually have a lot of snow built up thats still soft, because its consistently below zero so the snow never partially melts and refreezes, which is what causes it to solidify in more temperate winters. In fact it was even considered as a method to drop Soviet paratroopers in the 30s....paratroopers being a strong word given they didnt have a parachute, the plane would just fly really low.
