I jokingly respond to a friend's tweet about a roller derby intake. I had zero interest in it at that point. I ended up going to the intake for the heck of it, and 13 years later I have traveled across North America, skated in playoffs and a world championship tournament, skated for 3 different leagues, trained thousands of people, and at this point it is a more central part of my identity and my life than my career.

I was partway through my third year in college majoring in biochemistry. I had completed all the prerequisites and was starting the second class in the actual biochemistry core series. On day one the professor informed us that there were only enough seats in the next class for about 60% of us. I very quickly realized I hated the material. We spent weeks memorizing metabolic chemical pathways and it was making me want to gouge my eyes out. I got a D on the first test and the professor met me to let me know that I would have to basically ace the rest of the course to make it into the next class. I ended up dropping my major and changing to computer science. Now I work for a games company and I love every moment of it.

I watch every video he makes just because I enjoy his personality and humor. I especially enjoy his videos when I'm enjoying a drink. But my personal favorite videos of his are when he invents his own cocktails based on pop culture like books and video games. But I also know he is doing this for a living and doing videos that get the most views is pretty much a necessity. So if he has to make gross drink episodes for the laughs and high view count I don't mind. I might think they are below his quality but I still find them entertaining in a different way from his far more interesting stuff like this.

Felt compelled to leave a comment after the hypothetical "maybe this changed YOUR life". Because in my case it quite literally did, and in fact defined my whole career path. starting with learning how to make a whiskey sour from you almost 4 years ago. To now being in charge of my own cocktail menu and bartending full time. This channel put me on that path, and somewhere along the way, Sam Ross, Milk & Honey, and Sasha Petraske became some of my biggest inspirations as well. But I don't think I ever would have gotten to this point now if 4 years ago, I hadn't stumbled upon your videos. So thank you for posting this, its weird to think how full circle it has come since those humble beginnings. and I don't think I could have asked for a better teacher.

Greg, this channel change my life. I was 19 when I watched your video on how to make an old fashioned. I became obsessed with drink making. I couldn’t even tend bar in my state yet. Two years later, however, I moved up from server to bartender armed with WAY more knowledge about the craft than the other bartenders working the same wood. I put a bar on Buffalo Trace’s Best Bourbon Bars in America at the age of 22. Now, at the age of 27, my family of five is fully supported by the income I bring in as highly respected hospitality operator. Thank you, HTD.

Dale Degroff made me a Remember the Maine while he was visiting Nashville and I had no idea who he was in 2011, by 2014 I was hosting Repeal Day dinner in Tampa with him, by 2017 I was in Nashville partying with Sam Ross & crew celebrating the opening of Attaboy while slinging drinks at Henley... and another year later disability came and took me out of it. Thank you for your story, Greg, it's nice to be reminded of why we all love cocktails.

Your videos mean a lot to me. I was Mormon until I was 25, so alcohol was entirely foreign to me. It was embarrassing to have missed out on what was such a common experience for most people, and it was intimidating stepping into a world with so many unknowns. Your videos helped me feel more empowered and comfortable in my new life. I once had to be away from family for a few months for work. I was away from my kids, alone for Halloween, thanksgiving, Christmas, new years, and Valentine’s Day. Having a silly video about the evil dead or just a recipe for the best homemade eggnog made the holidays much less lonely. Keep up the good work man

Hey Greg, I just wanted to tell you about how you changed by life with this channel. I can talk about how people get me birthday gifts of bar stuff from me talking about your drinks, or about how I was the bartender for the family gathering or how I it's lead me to make my own drinks, but I have a more personal story. See, I used to hate spirits, but from your content I learned that I loved bourbon. Skip forward a few years of me enjoying it I was at my cousins birthday/cancer remission party, and I was the DD that night, but people agreed that a splash of something would be fine (regardless of whether or not that's true, it happened) and that's when someone brought out the big gift of the night, a $200 dollar bottle of crown, my cousins favorite alcohol. Old me would have never touched it, but I had to try it, and it was great. Me and my cousin were in heaven sipping on it and talking about, and I convinced my dad tp try it and he hated, and me and my cousin laughed at him for his "bad taste". The story of my cousin doesn't end well, but because of you I got to have a great last memory with him, and that's more than anything I could ever ask for. Thank you.

For anyone wondering, Sam Ross once said on an episode of Bartender At Large that a factor that led to the creation of the Penicillin was an abundance of different Compass Box whiskies. The original bottles he used in the Penicillin were Asyla for the base and Peat Monster for the float. Obviously, Monkey Shoulder and Laphroaig are much easier to come by and make a perfectly delicious Penicillin. Again, just for those wondering.

Talking about personal stories, this channel was what first got me into cocktails, which then led me to other cocktail channels and books, and in a kind of weird way made me realize that I love traveling! It's been 3 or 4 years since I first started watching, and since then I have gone on several vacations where my main destination was a great bar in the area, and amassed a collection of over 100 bottles, so it's kind of incredible to think that all might not have happened if I hadn't been randomly recommended a video on making Irish Coffee while I was working from home. So I'd like to say, personally, thank you for this (even if my wallet might not agree).

This drink then changed my life too! During COVID, I wanted a creative outlet and my friends started hosted weekly potlucks to keep ourselves sane during the lockdowns. Since I was too busy with work to cook, I would bring drinks. Simple stuff at first, but then I found this channel. With a lot more time on my hands, I began following your recipes with both cocktails and syrups. I’m now happy to say I’m president of a local wine and spirits club and have been teaching people how to get into making ingredients and drinks of their own! If there’s a special occasion, I’ll even bring a backpack full of stuff to bartend for a friend’s birthday or something. Basically, I’m glad you had this drink and started making videos. Speaking of Sam Ross, there's a cocktail of his that was introduced to me by the educated barfly which is called the midnight stinger. It's my go to drink for my post adult swim anime night at my cocktail bar. DeviantOllam talked in one of his videos about batch making it for a camping trip he went on, and as I had a camping trip of my own coming up, I went looking for more information about the recipe, which led me here. I still haven't made a Paper Plane yet, but I have tried my hand at a number of others, including a Ruby Milk Punch that went over quite well at the next year's camping event. Around the time you were discovering craft cocktails on the East Coast, I was working in Berkeley, CA, at a farm to table restaurant (right when that term was starting to bubble up). Our bar was filled with fresh juices and was super seasonal. Like our cocktails changed every two weeks. Because a key ingredient we would use would no longer be in season. I wish I could find my notebook with all the recipes we were working with. After I left there, I went to grad school and worked in non-profits. And the money dried up for regular cocktail hour. Just recently, your channel has reminded me of those days. Days when I would save up my tips for a fancy bottle of something so we could have nice drinks out of glasses we found at the Goodwill which made our shitty little apartment in the not-yet-gentrified part of Oakland a little more bareable. Now that I am married, have kids and steady a steady job, I am finding myself cruising the good booze aisles again. Thanks for all you do, Greg. It is a joy to be able to marginally participate in this delightful freak show you have created.

What a fantastic episode, thanks for sharing this with us. Your comment about bad drinks episodes doing well made me think, and my favorite episodes are the ones where you go mad scientist, tweaking bad/not quite right drinks until you turn them into something good. It's super interesting watching you work through your process, and you seem so happy when you nail it.

This show sparked my interest in beverages and hospitality a long time back in college. I've worked years and years in a similar field and, at the time, it was a means to an end. The paycheck made rent. Your show sparked my drive to really do the best work I can in that job. To craft drinks people want to drink and build experiences around it. You continue to do that still, which is why I'm here and on Patreon. I wouldn't have gone as far as I have into my career in coffee if I hadn't gotten this kind of inspiration from you and others. Thanks for this little bit of sentiment. Was a good reminder of why I've been along on this ride for so long. 😊

It’s amazing how a single drink can stick in your head for your whole life. Mine? Although I love cocktails, it’s a glass of Dom. I was a 21 year old waiter working New Year’s Eve a very long time ago. From a working class background. We ran the night, and when everyone cleared out at 3 AM - our Manager, Marty, and ex-Navy man 25 years older than all of us, thanked us for a great night, and opened up a palette of Dom. At the time, it was $100 a bottle. It tasted amazing! I have never felt so appreciated as on that night. And every year, that Dom tastes better! Thanks Marty! If you’re still around, I’d do anything you ask.

Wow! This is a great example of why I love cocktails. Not only was your story amazing, but the boulevardier is one of my favorite drinks. The Left Hand just seems like a better, more balanced version. I just made one. So excellent! Thanks for your channel!!

Man, you kind of hit it on the head Greg... I liked a few cocktails before watching the show, and also liked a few other cocktail channels, but your vibe and mine were operating on the same frequency it seemed, so I just kept watching. Eventually I built out my collection of spirits and bar tools, and now I am what my friends consider The Cocktail Guy. I am thankful for that drink, and the path it's led you down, which enhanced my path as well. I will be sipping on the Left Hand Cocktail tonight. Cheers!

I remember catching your live streams once and recommending you make a left hand. I never realized it was also your favorite, as it’s also my absolute #1 favorite cocktail. My sister works at a tapas bar in Philly. I visited her for a weekend and sitting at the bar their bartender made me a left hand. Also absolutely life-changing, and now I have to have this ingredients stocked at home at all times. Helps that I absolutely love Italian amaros, so Campari is on hand always at home. Thanks for sharing and I’m so glad the drink had as much meaning to you, as well… aaaand now I have to make one and sip it while watching the rest of this video. Cheers!

Feed back loops and interconnected moments…you did a video about gifts a few years ago…safety razor was on it…fast forward…now there’s soaps, razors, straight razors, aftershaves, booze, glassware and gear… wife hates it but everyone else loves it. The channel made me go down different rabbit holes but I came out the other side better each time !

You say maybe this changed your life, I suppose in a way it did, at least in the way I approached drinking. I was very much a "spirit and mixer" guy, and I'd drink way too much all the time because I was just drinking to get drunk... when I found your channel I was still raging a bit, but I thought I'd try a few, so I made your old fashioned from way, way back and... suddenly, I discovered something amazing. This wasn't something I was drinking so I'd get drunk, this was flavor! This was an experience! I continued making some of your drinks, and I noticed that I was drinking slower because it took more effort to make a drink. It literally was harder to get drunk making cocktails, but I didn't care. Now, I drink for the flavor, not the high, and I couldn't be happier. Thank you Greg :)

I love these story episodes with good cocktails and the nice history lessons or stories. I like the variety of videos, the educational ones, the inprovised ones, the suffering ones, the testing ideas ones, ect. Keep up the good work Greg and Co.! Personally, I got into mixology through these videos and followee Gregs advice on building a home bar and have learned to make really tasty drinks from this show (Blue Mountain King may be my favorite one Ive tried). Its mind boggling to think about the series of events that lead to me watching how to drink and decideding to make a Gin Fizz for my friend one of the first times me hung out.

Greg I found your channel a bit into the pandemic, where I couldn’t go out to bars and had just finished college so I finally had the money to start building a bar at home. Eventually I got a bit tired and stopped making cocktails at home. On a trip to Boston with my fiancé, we stopped at a bar called Drink - and it changed everything for me. We stayed there all night, between the same “no menu” concept as M&H and the incredible bartender we had (thanks Fred), it was the first memorable cocktail experience we both had - and it convinced me to get back into home bartending (much more than the first time) Thanks for the story and all the book recommendations over the years!

That's a cool backstory on how you got into this. I've had a decently stocked home bar for a while, and my go-to drink has been the Old Fashion for most of my adulthood. I guess we can all track our current paths back to their origins. I am a nurse now, I've spent nearly all of my childhood in hospital, the nurses there were often mean to me, so now I do my best to make the lives of the people I care for a bit more pleasant while they're going through it. I have no idea how I stumbled across your channel some odd 6 years ago, I think some episode got recommended to me by YT and oh boi am I glad it did. I don't drink alcohol, but you are very entertaining and educational, so I still watch every episode and recommend your stuff to friends that actually do drink. Thanks for being awesome!

I remember finding your channel when I was in a deadend relationship that I thought was the one and I remember thinking "wow I didn't know drinking could be like this" and when we broke up I am so grateful that I wasn't still drinking mountain dew mixed with vodka because by the time my depression hit hard making a drink was a form of meditation for me and I didn't fall down the bottle so I hold up this old fashioned (my favorite based on your recommendation btw) to you good sir!

Thank you. This reminded me if my first two wow cocktails. And, I was finaaly able to find the recipes tonight. They were back to back served by Aaron Butler on his last night at Drink before he went to Russell House Tavern. I was blown away. The first drink was the Trafalgar and the second was the Norman conquest. Aaron was playing with some rare bottles that night, i especially remeber a dram of a peaty Islay to wash the glass. Try'em enjoy. And thank you.

Part of what makes me love this channel so much (And I really do. You have to understand, I don't even drink. Due to no longer having a colon, drinking just is more pain than it's worth beyond the smallest amounts spread far, far apart. And yet I watch this channel religiously, knowing I will be unlikely to ever experience any of these drinks.) is just how much you put of yourself into the channel. Mind you, it could just be the usual act, and obviously there is always some of that when you are hosting a youtube channel, but it really does feel like this channel, to you, is an old school "art" and you can't help but put yourself out there for us to see all the time. Your humor, the references you find worth sharing, your opinions on everything from how certain alcohols taste to you to just anything that comes up in life. You without a doubt are what makes this show so worthwhile (Not that I want to disparage what Meredith adds, she is incredible too!).

I realize I'm part of the minority audience here, but I watch every episode of HTD, and by FAR these types of episodes are my favorite. Greg, I think it's unlikely that you'll see this, but I hope somehow you do. The episodes where we get to know YOU and you kindof wax philosophical while making so excellent drinks are the best IMO. (Feed the algorithm though, I'm not going anywhere lol) The first episode of HTD I ever saw was your skyrim drinks episode. I love that episode and revisit it occasionally. I've still yet to make a White Gold Tower, but that episode kicked off my cocktail journey and for that I am thankful. If not for that episode I'd likely never have learned to design my own cocktails or be able share both those drinks and knowledge with my friends. Thank you for the show and everything you do. You were the first cocktail channel I discovered and you are the channel that gave me a love for cocktails.
