As a senior who just played this show a couple of months ago, I have to say, it was incredible. From how we started that season, the initial excitement from the ideas being thrown at us, to that night. It’s insane. It truly did feel like a coma back story though. From being a point or two behind in prelims, to less than a point in semis, to that night at finals. I still cannot believe that it actually happened. From 15th my freshman year in the A drumline (yes, Avon did have both), to that special night. That’s one moment in my life that I am confident I will never forget. Watching this video did put a smile on my face. So much work went into it, and I’m happy that we were able to pull it off. By the way, I was one of the center 4 marimbists

Good morning, Eric! A school I'd recommend watching is the North Shore Senior High School. they're in the texas colorguard circuit, and because our school's drumline is so good, they're the only world class drumline in the world class of tcgc. Because my slightly aggressive narcissism was pointed out, I'm going to recommend other drumlines because they're right. Avon High School Hebron High School All the Klein schools (Klein, Collins, Cain, Forest, Oak) (they don't have an indoor show, but they have a video of them in the lot) the Woodlands high School Drumine

First of all, THIS WHOLE VIDEO IS AMAZING! But second: As a string and brass player, and only having taken a snare drum techniques class in college, I have a couple of questions for you regarding drum notation. I'm looking at the passage at 3:51, where the pentuplets are: Why are they notated as 16th notes with the single bars below? Would that make them 32nd notes, or are you doubling them (which I would assume from seeing this in string parts), effectively making them 64th notes? And that begs the next question, in that why aren't they then labeled as 64th notes? Next, in the dotted-16th-32nd-16th-16th, what does the "x" notehead (the third note in the brace) represent? And finally, there are the lines above the notes in the triplet-16ths-8th buzz: What do those lines represent? They look like tenuto ("separate the notes," oversimplifying the term for those of you who don't know what "tenuto" means) markings to me, which would seem odd in the context of the instrument being played (sharp-attack snare drums)? I have never in my life ever read notes that fast! Other than amazing flutter-tonguing on a brass instrument (which I still can't do, even after playing horn for 42 years) or tremolo bowing on a string instrument (or very fast, controlled plucking on a guitar or mandolin, etc.), I am puzzled at how any single person can play like this, let alone two and more people in a section! Mad props to all of you percussionists out there! I learn more and more all the time from this channel. And I plan on watching more and more, so I can learn more and more -- and try to control my drooling over such great musicianship. Wow.
@Jelly888752 жыл бұрын
Not emc but I can reply, he is essentially doubling those notes in the pentuplet bar, those bars across the note symbolize a “double” where you play the note twice in one stroke of the drum, while technically they can be written as 32nd notes, it’s more cleanliness of page type thing. For your second question that “x” notates a rimshot, where you hit the drum and rim at the same time creating a sharper noise. For the third question. You’re right about them being tenuto, but for drummers it just means to hit the drum slightly harder than soft
@snickpickle2 жыл бұрын
@@Jelly88875 Many thanks for the reply. I suppose if I played drums for real, I could read that fast, but thankfully (in a way) I've never had to read that fast for string bass! Haha! But seriously, after a while, Western notation runs out of markings for some things (in my own classical compositions, I have had to do some of my own "improvising," to get the message across as to what I want to happen at certain points, as well. It does make sense to use a "tenuto" marking for a slightly harder hit, as opposed to an outright accent mark. When one is rifling off hits that fast, I could see that a tenuto would be more clear than peppering the notation with accent marks. Again, thanks for the reply! Cheers!
@aviatr9542 Жыл бұрын
@@snickpickle It's not really about "reading the notes fast" - we drummers break this stuff down extremely slow, and learn the sticking patterns at slow tempos before building them up. Gradually it builds muscle memory, and reading a passage like this is not about reading the individual notes quickly but recognizing "groups" of notes at a time that have been practiced/broken down already. That section you pointed out has some seemingly very fast individual notes at the end, but to us it's simply groupings of "threes" (RRR or LLL) played at the intended rhythmic spacing (32nd sextuplet note timing). It's essentially just 5 strokes mechanically in the big picture (RLRLR), with the first 4 strokes getting "three" 32nd sextuplet notes out of the overall stroke, and there's intended technique/muscle memory behind all of these different patterns (we call "rudiments").

I was actually in winter percussion that year, and after we performed we got to see Avon, and wow… let’s just say I feel bad for the people who go against them every year. Also side note: apart from their bad spell in like 2018 or 2019, I don’t think I’ve ever seen them lose, both in winter percussion and marching band. I’m convinced the only reason we have band contest is so those freaks of nature can pick up their state champion rings every year.
