When you have the light from the garage opening as a background, you become just silhouettes against the light. Better position the camera so the garage opening is behind the camera. Then you get the light on you instead of behind you. It will be a much better picture where you can see what you are doing. Fun build!😎

Over here in Europe we called your dune buggies - beach buggies, on account of most folk live nowhere near a desert. The thing that all of those buggies have in common is the inburstable air-cooled aluminium flat four VW boxer engine, the 1600cc preferable if you could get one. I had the 1970's VW1600 Type 3 fastback, with the pancake boxer, designed by one F. Porche. VW's 'Chevvy Corvair'. I never understood why nobody used that pancake engine with the cooling fan on the end of the crankshaft. Imo it was far more neat & compact, designed as it is to live under a trapdoor in the 'boot locker' at the rear of the car. The identical set up of the Chevvy flat 6 boxer in the back of the US Corvair. Incidentally the same layout, as I understand it, with the classic Porche 911. You know, American muscle, and all that.

In the early '70s we'd take our Ford Quadra Vans bikes and buggies to Blythe or Picacho on the Colorado River. Six groups of us would go for a three day trip. We got our buggy frames from Chenowith frames in San Diego. I saw original owner, Steve, in NorCal.

Good story on the Sheriff... made me laugh and remember my own! Back in the late 80s (high school), I had my friends 70 Cuda to do some wiring on it and took it for a cruise. I felt compelled to lay down a mean burnout next to the local hangout, rounded the corner of the building and there were 3 police cars parked in the lot having a dinner break. Needless to say, there was one spot between two cars and I just pulled in and surrendered. They knew my mom (local ER nurse) and they sent me on my way with, "We'll just have a chat with your mom...." Worse than a ticket. LOL

Man you sure do you know how to hit the feels. Brought tears to my eyes thinking that i’ll never have that with my kids. Reason being is cell phones and technology ruined stuff like that. If all the kids nowadays could go back in time to a better time like that, like I grew up with, they would finally realize what they’re missing. Hopefully more young people start leaning towards the good ol times. Thanks Merlin

I pretty much grew up going to the dunes every year just as your kids did, and at 35 now I decided to purchase a truck and buggy to re-live the memories all over again. I guess I should just move to the next St George, AKA Kanab. Cheers.

Man - this brings back old memories!! We used to race these things on the ice - Im from Canada if anyone is asking. We took a bug pan, cut 2 feet out of it - Yes two feet!! Made ice racers, fixed the engines so they wouldn't freeze up, studded the rear tires and found out you had to remove the treads on the front wheels or it would send ice right into your face! Build a half assed shroud to keep you from freezing up and off we went. Yes we built a roll cage if you are asking. With a stock bug engine you could have fun all winter. Greetings from the wild men from Canada with ice in their teeth! Ha ha ha ! I AM SO GLAD I SUBSCRIBED!!!

It's nice to see this. I inherited my buggy thats in the garage. Last time I drove it was maybe 13, when I still fit in it. I was 5'7" back then. Mine also has a v8. If you ever visited Sand Mtn or Pismo on major holiday weekends you might have run into us. It's a short wheel base, full length is 11 feet motor to bumper, Bright yellow with a Yellow Jacket flag at the top. I'm like maybe 4 years difference in age, than yourself.

Thanks for bringing back my 1970s memories. I had a 1972 VW Beetle that had a trailer hitch built into a custom rear bumper. I still have the bumper. I trailered my Honda and Hodaka trail bikes and later a Suzuki RM 125 and 250 motor cross bike to track. I still have the Hodaka gas tank. J C Whitney had a special Volkswagen catalog for parts which was my Christmas wish book. Popular Mechanics magazine had VW dune buggy builds which I still have a copy. I can remember changing oil, adjusting valves, tweaking carb and changing ignition point distributor and condenser. I think I upgraded to dual point distributor, loud exhaust, carb, air filter and shocks. The VW lasted many years and never left me on the side of the road. It was a great engine, simple to work on and easy to drop engine as a shade tree mechanic to replace clutch and throw out bearing. I went trail and hill climbing and later motocross. Good family fun for adults and a Honda 70 kept the grandchildren happy. Merlin looks like you are with 3 and 4 wheelers for kids.

A life well lived includes a lifelong friend to help you stay young. I love the fact that you have a best friend, Brother from another, from your childhood...that is priceless. I had a Dune Buggy as a teen, though I lived in Upstate NY, and that thing was beyond awesome. I had a 1600cc VW engine in it and a quarter keg for a gas tank. I perfected my manual transmission skills at the ripe age of 14 on that Buggy and a 1968 Bug that I drove in the fields...I grew up in the country, and I miss it. Great watching you, Paul at #TheFabRats and Matts crew at #MattsOffRoadRecovery get this platoon ready for Glamis. I can't wait to see the videos.
