Having cut my teeth on VW's, we had 4 and an engine out about every weekend. Calling all the issues out before you all figured them out was nostalgic. I could still probably reassemble from pure memory. When they are tuned and running well, I found them to be reliable and tanky. Easy to keep running. Even had on the fuel pump went out on with a 30 mile commute to school and back. Climbed hills with a full carb, coasted down hills with motor off, popped the clutch at the bottom and ran up the next hill till the carb ran out. Refilled, rinse and repeat until I got a new pump in. Fond memories.

Nice rail! I have that same frame - it's a late 70s / early 80s Chenowth short-back sand rail. They are super fun to play around on and fairly easy to work on once you get the hang of VWs. Great vid!

Awesome deal! When I was 17, I drove a 1967 Beetle as my daily. You often make pals with other weirdos that drive Vee-Dubs and one I met had a short wheelbase, 2-seater sandrail. It was clean as a whistle and powered with a stock 1,600cc engine. Fun for days, folks. Even with the bone-stock powerplant, it was fast and I wanted it. He offered to trade for my Type-1, but alas it was not to be. Mom wasn't havin' it. I always wanted to score one since, but it still ain't happened. Maybe someday, huh?

There's a VW sand rail on the offer and up site for sale. but it's a four seater. I believe it has VW square back engine in it. because the fan is down in front of the engine instead of up on top of the engine. I live in Washington State also. those paddle tires don't work well for pull starting. due to lack of traction on the wet ground.

I'm glad my first car was a 1967 VW bug, otherwise I might not have learned persistence or that German engineering was so wonky. I fell in love with the wonkiness and then got a '64 baja, a '68 transporter, and my last VW was a '81 diesel rabbit pickup. There's nostalgia watching this, but I'll never own another bug, don't want to deny any newer enthusiast the opportunity.

Did You Know That These Motors Came Out First With A 6 Volt Starter, Which I Think It Should Have In It, The 12 Volt Starter You Are Using Would Have Too Much Strength . That's Probably Wouldn't Help With The Stripping Of The Flywheel Gears ( Teeth ) If It's A 6 Volt Alternator It Won't Keep Your Battery Charged

I have a borderline autistic fixation on building an old school Afghan style dpv. Firstly, I need the base vehicle before anything. Plans are to be street legal but able to do average off-road (I live next to a moutian). What price range am I looking at for a reliable start before anything cosmetic? I'll take a high and a low estimate. [Edit: I'd also appreciate if you got some company references, this is a life goal tbh]

Starters ain't cheap..You said you had 400 dollars worth of stuff in that box, I believe it cause parts ain't cheap anymore..Those bug engines use to run kinda like 4ever..In the 70s you wouldn't believe the rail buggys people tried building with bubblegum welds and whatnot..Those were cool buggy frames like you have but the Billy Bob back yard builds, naaaahhh. Horrible and nowhere near bein safe and that's why we don't hardly ever see a bunch of em cruising around in the summer..Everybody had 1 until the goof troop got together and started building horrible buggys so they took em off the roads cause they were considered unsafe although the 1 yall have is built strong cause people could buy em already put together or some assembly required but they were safe and reliable..I use to put fat tires on the rear and 70s on the front and do mine up like a drag car and it'd pull the wheels bad coming outa the hole lol..The 70s was so cool and gobs of fun..I haven't seen any bug's like that for quite a bunch of years...At least 45 years or less cause 80s is when the poleece started taking em off the roads but not every state banned em, I'm really not sure about em taking the bug's off the roads cause people went through a faze in life and they were everywhere..People traveled state to state and everything. If you had a bug you most definitely had the females around cause they loved em lol..I'm miss that part most of all cause girls were fun and we had respect and everything for em..Those that didn't treat em right got their heads cracked lol..Stay young as long as you can and enjoy every inch of life cause it's gone in the blink of an eye..Good luck with the bug in the future..
