You may have missed what really makes Frieren hate them. Aura basically told her there was no point in honoring the memory of Himmel. It's the whole purpose of her current adventure.

Also, there's the fact that their entire existence pretty much revolves around killing humans. Their "Words" are nothing more than a weapon to fool humans into letting down their guard before killing them. If I were to compare them to something, it'd be a magic spell. They're less 'human creatures' and more like 'spells' that is aimed at humanity. No matter how complex they can become, their end goal will still end up being 'killing the humans'. Honestly, I pity them, but in the same way I pity goblins in Goblin Slayer, in that they're pitiful creatures that cannot grow beyond their set parameters, that they will still inevitably be beings that cannot help but kill humans.. thus killing them all the same, as is the case of Goblin Slayer.

Lugner wasn't actually begging Linie for help. He said it out loud for Fern to hear, because it was also another lie. Just some words to distract Fern so she'd give him an opening. It's why the ending of their fight has another level of beauty since he got done in by the same trick he tried to pull.

@@Pyxyty There are clues strewn about in the storytelling. Demons are established to be logical albeit alien creatures that prioritize their survival. At the same time, they are arrogant predators who can only think of others as prey. Lugner starts by directly mentioning Stark's death out loud to Fern. It's not like he actually cares about Stark. It's an instinct to put the prey on the backfoot, to worry about their friend. Lugner also only says "Hurry up and finish him". He never says "Help me". Linie is hurrying to finish that order, but only that. These are very literal creatures, who have been shown to not care about each other. Draht died, and all it got was the clinical analysis. There is no narrative evidence that shows Linie cares about Lugner's well-being, or vice-versa. Nor is there any evidence that they can somehow communicate non-verbally like we do. Furthermore, Linie says that Lugner hates it when she interrupts. Fern herself states how prideful Lugner is. His defining trait is that arrogance of his. It would've be fun for us of course to see him abandoning that arrogance to ask for help, but that doesn't make sense in this context. While fighting Fern, he's still logically and calmly evaluating the situation. Narratively, there's no breaking point to shift his character. Then when he realizes he needs an advantage, he uncharacteristically shouts to Linie. Of all things he could do, he warns Fern and Stark that Linie is about to get serious. Logically not a wise choice, unless it relates directly to what he was silently thinking of a second before: "I need an opening". And by that, I mean he could've told Linie to ignore Stark and join him. But no, he chose the method that should've unnerved any other normal foe. Because he wanted that kill. And the most compelling thing: Narratively, it is irony that gets him. Lugner wants to distract Fern using Stark's death, Linie dies, Lugner gets distracted, and Fern sees an opening. In a story full of tropes, this one is tried and tested throughout literary history. Irony got Qual, it got Lugner. It's gonna get someone else again.

I liked how on paper both Lugner and Linie were superior opponents for Fern and Stark in terms of technique and experience, but both Fern and Stark had at least one thing that they excelled at that they could rely on to grasp victory, Fern with her casting speed and Stark with his strength.

But you'd empathize with them in the same way you do for a rabid (as in, actual rabies) beast, it still needs to be put down, because it is only a danger.

Eisen and Frieren trained their students well. Stark is tank that can dish damage while Fern doesnt have enough mana but can speed cast ordinary offensive magic and defensive spells. Eisen and Frieren made the next gen of heroes without trying.

You could tell that people in Frieren’s world fight very efficiently. Like Lugner analyzing Fern and changing tactics to adapt while Linie switch weapons to overwhelm Stark when she knows he’s on the defensive. Fern spamming ordinary but efficient magic to conserve her mana and also because shes injured while Stark studying the secrets of Linnie techniques and realize his advantage by tanking her and switch to offensive.

I think it is just good writing. The writer makes sure everyone in the story both the protagonists and antagonists aren't idiots (except Stark but he's young and inexperienced unlike these demons). So they don't fight simplistically but also fight with flaws (e.g. Lugner's arrogance and distaste for defeating foes with sneak attacks while still using a sneak attack to prove that he could do it too yet allowing Ferne to get her weapon and into a fighting stance because he wanted to beat her without a sneak attack) that match their established character.

"He caps..." "Lügner" in German means "liar", and if you go back over his dialogue, almost everything he says actually is a lie, with a few exceptions that mostly only assist in his lies. in the manga Fern is not only fast but really2 efficient in magic, it's honestly so good because it's on theme with her personality that hate to waste time. So does Stark, he is not really an aggresive person, if anything he tend to endure things on himself being the target of Fern verbal abuse most of the time hehe. To your question at 21:00. The first sentence from Linie was towards Lugner. The second sentence from Linie was referring to Stark. In the original Japanese it's much clearer, it's the translation that screws it. She said "how self-serving can you be." then she said "This guy is all fighting defensively." Meaning: Yeah you initially wanted me not to help you and now you are making an U-turn and chasing me to finish my job quickly so that I can help you. But look at this guy I'm against, he's all turtling, my job is not as easy as you think it is.

Fun fact, but after Frieren killed Draht in the prison cell, she said something like "one down, two two go". In Japanese, you have different words for counting different things. "two people" would be FUTARI (二人), but that's not what she says. She uses NIPIKI (2匹), 匹 being literally the term used for counting animals. So yes, to here they are literally animals. Remember that the girl copied Eisen's technique while he was in his prime. Also, while current day Eisen was scared of Stark's strength, his skills were still not necessary better than him. When Stark fought defensively, she could still hit him through the openings he had and could counter all of his attacks. But when he chose to give a fight aggressively tanking any damage, she could still counter it with Eisen's superior techniques but her counter wasn't heavy enough to cut him in half. Instead the axe was stuck after cutting 1/4th of him and he could finish her off.

The show does a very good job setting up the confrontation, backstory to reveal the turn and amazing animation to do the fights justice. I was ready for a slow, slice of life story.. one of the reasons the axe strikes from Linie has so little weight is because the axe is made of magic. it is literally magic in the shape of an axe, so it has almost no weight behind it. a regular axe moving that fast is going to fly through him without if it was swung that fast. but she doesn't see the axes weight when copying techniques, only the mana that causes the movement.

The manga fights comparatively were much more simpler/tamer & 'efficient' as what you'd expect from most mages who are basically just flinging spells at each other (kinda' like how normal gunfights really are, less flashy evades, poses, etc.).

Eisen teaches Stark the secret technique that Takemichi has already perfected: tank those blows and keep getting up 😂 the men were on the defensive, on their toes during the fights. Glad to see a simultaneous defeat from our heroes! Can't even front, Linie was on her shit during the fight, putting the pressure on Stark. Both fights were very well choreographed and, as you guys said, the psychology behind how each character was fighting was thought out and made the demon's deaths make sense, and have intent, while also rounding out our heroes' capabilities (especially Fern being able to bring something new to the table).

Linie has a really cool skill and it is really OP. Similar to Fairy Tail's Scarlet Erza's ability to materialize any weapon and armor in her collection. Too bad Linie had to die.

So, like Lugner said, all demons basically start with a magic type they prefer and specialize in it, and then create their own unique magic within that type. Aura basically went with either Necromancy or Enchantment(the field with charm and mind control, so likely this one more so than Necromancy) , then specialized in the soul magic part of that magic type, and created her unique magic Scales of Obedience with soul magic. (And even added conditions that it can backfire on her if she loses the contest for the weight of the soul, so to increase the potency of the spell even more (hunter x hunter nen condition style). Though, in the end, it's not really a weakness because the spell doesn't activate on its own. Aura has to manually activate the spell. This means that she simply has to not use the spell on people she feels have more mana than her, and she simply escapes, subordinate herself or use her puppets against those with greater mana in their souls.)

Yeah, it's why Flamme, Frieren, and Fern specialized in hiding/supressing their magical power. So Demons underestimate them and not give Demons their clear strength. Spolier Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler Frieren is baiting Aura to weigh her soul so she can basically make Aura's spell backfire. Nen conditions is really one of the best power concept I've seen implemented as long as it is balanced. Aura logically had all the advantages (Large mana amount and still increasing as she lives, Growing army, targettable and not passive spell).

I've read the source material enough to understand the intricacies implied between the lines and based on general stuff learned about the world from later stuff helping my understanding early events in the series. Their ability to speak : it's just a tool of manipulation. they kill humans not because they need to eat, or pleasure from it, they kill humans because it's has always been their way since they were born. Even some demons later in the story who tries to understand humans, still kills alot of humans in that process.

It may not sound as much in English, but the scales aren't stated to be a magic item with that ability. What is said is that the "Scales of Obedience" is the unique magic of Aura. In other words, the physical scales she holds are just Aura's magic staff/catalyst to channel her unique magic.

But if you mean special magic item with a special ability, then nope. It is never referred as such. You are falling specifically for what I warned not to fall for. Technically, the "Scales of Obedience" isn't the actual name of Aura's unique magic, but it is the epithet given to it and what humans call it.

If it was a magic ability it would be singular. "She places her own soul and that of her target onto the scales" showing that the scales are a physical object. "The Scales are risky to use, but that's what makes them so powerful" Again, THEM not singular. "Though the scales always tilt to one side" showing the scales are a physical, visible object. "They do judge fairly" demonstrating that the scales function APART from the demon's will. There is the "Auserlese. Spell of Obedience." phrase mentioned twice, but it is never defined and may just be a trigger for the scales. The ONLY evidence in your favor is that the scales are in one panel at the end of the battle and then they're never in any other after.

She uses scales as a staff/medium for the process of her unique magic. And opinions from humans with whom Aura never explained everything is not a reliable narrator. If course it's "them" since in those sentences the ability is called Scales of Obedience, which it plural because, you know what, scales are ALWAYS in plural. That's just how that word is. Because it had two parts. 3- I've also seen good theories that the scales are simply create with magic. Whether it is this or it is just a normal scale, the end result is the same. They are not usable by others for the main power is Aura's unique magic.

There is nothing that says whether or not someone could use them. He talks about them as if they're a known entity. And frankly, it'd be a REALLY stupid magic to create if you were a demon.

No, her weapon of choice isn't what made her lose, her EXPLAINING that she copied Eisen was the cause of her lost. then Stark only needed to gamble on the fact that she only copies the moves, not the strength. Something I forgot to say last week, but is still relevant (not spoiler, mostly just context and in-between the lines stuff): The reason Lugner said in the previous episode that demons surpassed Zoltrack half a century ago (so about 50 years ago) was because by that point demonkind had been fighting human mages using Zoltrack against them for about 20-30 years. While humans went with blocking Zoltrack with better barriers and with upgrades on the magic resistance of magic armors, demons went about it purely with magic resistance. Demons already focused on making their own body more resistant to magic. And since the sealing of Qual and after facing humans using Zoltrack against demons for a while, demons found a way to boost the magic resistance of their bodies to block piercing spells like Zoltrack. This is why Lugner was surprised when he got affected that much by Fern's Zoltrack, and how he figured out that it was Frieren's special modified version that is modified to work on demons. We never learn (as far as I recall) how the demon-killing version actually harms demons more, but my personal guess is that Frieren's modified version might actually target the magic particles that demons are mostly made up of. Or maybe the method is different. Regardless, it does do more harm to demons and monsters than against other stuff (like humans).

If anything, it is a matter of how much power if put in the spell. 1- For shorter range targets and when speed is more important, not as much. 2- For longer range targets, like the rock to pierce in episode 2, Fern charged it more. 3- For larger targets (a normal sized shot wouldn't have been enough to kill Qual), Frieren charged it more, and thus it also pierced the cliff. Personally, I'm more surprised that the shot in episode 8 didn't pierce the wall behind Lugner. This is why I'm assuming that it was a case where the power was only maintained for a shorter range.

Lugner failed because at first he didnt even think of Fern as an opponent, could have killed her right then. And tbh, this was just unfair for him, when the other side can just use a spell that negates everything abt demons. Literally every advantage Lugner had over Fern, mana, technique, experience, got nulled by faster speed, n attacks that can counter anything abt demons, he couldnt even put up shields fast enough. It also goes to show how arrogant n 1 dimensional demons r, had it been an experienced mage, who could assess the situation and change their fighting style, it would have been a fight, but demons stick to 1 magic their whole life, so when that magic n fighting style got countered, it s just gg. Hate the demons, but damn was it hard to watch someone's whole craft get diffed so hard because of bad match up n arrogance
