The sound that thing makes is pretty crazy. Yeah we complain about it in an F1 car, but in a road car it's very loud and unique, so I like it. Also for those saying the gear shift is slow, they made it deliberately slower so they can use the car's electric motors to fill in the torque gap. They do this to discharge excess electricity, so the car keeps accelerating through the "slow" gear changes.
@Huberman12342 ай бұрын
I worked at Mercedes in the engine factory when this car was in development. The MGU would whine so loudly and so high pitched that any test driver would get a migraine after half an hour of driving even with ear plugs and ear defenders. The engine is a completely redesigned engine and shares very little with the actual engine that was used in 2016 (which is what it's based off). One of the reasons it got delayed in production was because they wanted it to be fully road legal and it had to pass emission tests for California which are very strict. It kept failing on the cold-start emissions. I believe the solution was a small heater built into the car exhaust to warm the cat up before the engine starts. It was that or "don't drive this car in California".

TUV does more than yearly safety inspections for cars. TUV Rheinland is the German institute where you go to get your car homologated for the EU market. Every EU country has an organization where you can get your car homologated. In the UK you can get a type approval, which is what this car got, or an SVA, where you get your single vehicle approved (or not) but subsequent copies will all have to get an SVA, instead of automatically be approved.

If anyone is interested, a little precision about how these front flaps work : They are a bit like DRS : manually retracted with a button on the steering wheel, and deployed either if you brake, or if you press the button again. We see the driver do both during the lap depending on the need of braking or not. When they are closed, the wheel arch acts a bit like a plane wing. The air is accelerated and low pressure on top of the arch, and, crucially, the air inside is almost static relative to the car, with recirculation coming from the underbody etc. This means the pressure is way higher inside, and it lifts the whole front end of the car up. By the way, you'll notice on current endurance prototypes (as well as LMP1 cars in the past etc.) that those arches are always cut on the top. Remember the Mercedes cars flying at Le Mans ? They would have needed a big cut out of the top of the arch top prevent that! So, when the flaps are open, the higher air pressure inside the arch is evacuated there. This helps the whole car stick more to the ground and have more front grip, because of more downforce. Obviously, the shape and angle of the flaps help press the front end down and improve the downforce. When they retract, you lose downforce and gain top speed (less body drag). It is functionally an F1 DRS, just placed on the front end !

To be fair, I doubt the hybrid powertrain is ideal for the Ring, considering how long it is. The car has to haul the weight of those batteries and motors, even when they're saving power for later in the lap. This is why the Porsche 918 was not faster than the 991 GT2RS, despite being made by the same company and only a few years older with much more HP. To me, this car falls in the same category as the holy trinity, they're not necessarily going to be the outright fastest things on the track, but nobody driving one would give a fk
@Erowens982 ай бұрын
No surprise there, this car is heavy as sin so cornering is an inherent weakness. They've done a great job masking this issue, the downforce compensates for the high inertia. But even so, pure ICE vehicles can inherently corner better, given equal downforce, because they can be so much lighter. The advantage of a hybrid powertrain is a smooth torque curve and temporarily high horsepower. But the cost is around 250kg of added weight.
@Scoots19942 ай бұрын

To my mind "production car" needs to have a certain minimum number of cars sold to private customers. I can't say exactly what that number must be. At 10,000 it's definitely a production car. 1 isn't. I'm not even sure 10 would be a "production car" in my mind, especially if it's over a period of several years.

@F1ll1nTh3Blanks2 ай бұрын
It's pretty impressive, also you have to remember, outside of all the F1 engine the car is mostly conventional asides from a few active aero elements. That's really what you're paying for in the end and there's a lot of diminishing returns at this price range. I don't think the Valkyrie will be any good round here because of its heavy reliance on ground effect. It will struggle with all the uneven surfaces. I can imagine it will be that fun through the carousel. Something like Spa though, I feel like that would be interesting. I know they run similar lap times to race spec GT3 cars, within a tenth on the conventional circuits they tested at Hungaroring and Sakhir.
