If you are a meat lover, partaking of a traditional Savaji mutton meal is a must when in Hubli. Served in traditional homes of the Savaji community, almost hidden away in tiny bylanes of the city, the dishes are cooked by the women of the house and served exclusively by the menfolk. In this episode, we venture out to Nakod Savaji Khanavali in Durgadbail, and are rewarded with a delicious mutton meal, notwithstanding the seemingly brusque welcome and service ritual that only goes to reinforce the fact that it is all about the food here! Whilst at the eatery, we also take a peek into the kitchen to meet three generations of the Nakod family, including the women folk who cook the sheep-based fare to recipes that have been handed down through generations.
