A filter which never needs maintenance?! That's right, the moving bed filter is a set it and forget it filter, let's talk about why and more reasons why moving bed filters are incredible.

As a scientist who has had moving bed filters for years, I can tell you why I eliminated them. They have no detritus/mulm (gunk) holding capacity. The "gunk" in your water column passes straight through the K1 moving bed filter AND the high bacterial shed from the K1 media adds additional gunk to you water column. I have replaced all these filters with Poret foam, even on my monster 500 gallon aquarium. Foam has been shown to be more efficient than K1 in processing ammonia AND it does a great job of holding the gunk and assuring clear water.

I have a sump running in a 20 long supporting a rack of tanks. The 20 long is split into three largely equal chambers - the return chamber with the return pump, one with 20-30ppi foam, and the third, where water drains into the sump, is a weird version of a moving bed filter with plastic pot scrubbers filling it about 30% by volume. Between the water draining from the tank into this chamber and several air bars inside, the pot scrubbers tumble constantly and (unlike k1) are totally silent. Now, I'm not saying this is more efficient than a k1 chamber, but it's a LOT of self cleaning surface area that cost me $2 to set up in an otherwise empty section of the sump.

I've watched both of these moving bed vids, but coming from someone who keeps nano tanks and mostly consumes non mega giant monster fish yt, I still don't really have an idea of what the big huge moving bed filters look like and how they function. I'll do more research myself, but I think it would have been helpful for those of us who may not have experience, let alone have really seen one of these in action, a bit more footage of the moving bed types of filters. Just to get more of and idea of their actual applications. Thanks Bentley, I can definitely say I learn something new on all your vids. ✌️

basically, the k1 media is neutrally boyant so when bacteria grows on it, it will sink. That's why we add a pump or airstone to circulate the media as it will churn it to the surface. It's like what a convection diagram looks like

I agree 100%; I was thinking the same thing.

If MMBR didn't work, aquaculture farms wouldn't use them. They're obviously a bit space intensive, but they're solid, efficient, and cost effective. I've used a moving bed filter for a big turtle pond and guppy greenhouse(15 breeding tanks) in an old fiberglass pool sand filter, and that was legitimately maintenance free. Inline UV for salmonella from the turtles. I've more recently set up a 10 gallon sump with about half of it full of K1 and the other half full of sponge, mostly to keep the pump from vibrating on anything.

If you have a large enough volume of moving bed filtration, it works great because it drops older bacteria off so new younger bacteria can dominate, great video❤

I used the Ziss filter as extra filtration in a fancy goldfish tank and loved it.

These are good for fish fry when you are doing 100% water changes everyday in conjunction with very small sponge filter to grab solids and gunk out of water column, you are cleaning the sponge so much it really never seed good but that’s what the moving bed is for.

I've used diy moving media filters before. They worked great.

Thanks for this, the one "missing point" in all the aquaponics videos I've seen, where they all use MBBRs (moving bed bioreactor being their term) & share in detail how to make them is "maintenance", so as I keep on working towards building that system in my basement, the moving bioreactor will indeed be included in a sump, as especially for winter months when my mobility is more limited, as is my spouse's, the less work I have to do from mid December to early March, the better off I'll be. My current animals being able & willing to adapt to my issues - chickens especially well but I'd be super spooked if in the future a largemouth bass of mine was to climb the stairs as my 3 foot tall brahma's now do.😂

I just use Hang filter, I keep 30+ fish. Fish are happy. Just clear topside filter material when filter flow get low. Keep it simple Bentley as you say ;)

Hi Bentley I've been using moving bed filter with my fancy goldfish for years now I was really glad i had them last year when my canister filter stopped working at bedtime so my water puppies were fine till I got a news canister another plus after a power cut they instantly start working 😂

When I kept a group of goldfish, I used one of the Ziss filters along with a Co-Op sponge filter. I think it was a great combo. I don't recall it being loud. With my back up air pumps, I never worried when the power went out. That being said, I have never installed one in any of my other tanks and Im not really sure why 🤔 Probably as I'm not dealing with "poop machines" anymore 😂

I would use it in conjunction with some form of mechanical filtration (like a rollermat)

Ive been using a k1 chamber in a 150 gallon sump for years and i have no complaints. It is plumbed into my basement from my display and the maintenance on that chamber is nothing. Pads need cleaning and changing, but other than that, just change water. 2-3 pounds of market shrimp, squid, and cut fish go into that tank every week. Parameters never budge.

If you consider the H-X 13 (same as K1) in my Oase Biomaster a moving bed, then yes. Setting up my Oase FiltoSmart I used K1 instead of ceramic rings. My water is clear , tank is healthy and superior to any ceramic/crushed glass media. I kept the sponges in it for mechanical and some bio filtration

The moving bed filters are really good but to actually get the full use out of the crazy amount of bio filtration its capable of is to use it on monster fish tanks or for koi. I think there are many better options for most normal stocked aquariums that wont cost as much and not be completely overkill.

I bought one but it's just too loud with all the clanking. Sounds like someone slowly shaking popcorn kernels all the time. I do think they are awesome biological filters from all my reading and videos I've seen. The science definitely supports them. I think if i needed more bioload filtration than my current undergravel and HOB were able to handle i would definitely keep this as my best solution.
