THIS Fixed DJI O3's Biggest Flaw

I find the DJI O3 Air Unit amazing for my freestyle FPV Drone. Great DVR, great range and excellent onboard video recording. Unfortunately DJI decided to ditch the onboard mic so it's not possible to record the prop sound we all love. Bummer!

So I know weight is a factor for you drone guys but another viable solution is using a RunCam Thumb. The old cheaper one. While I've used a small recorder module with success also, I found that the Thumb made it a lot easier for me to get the audio lined up with the video because the Thumb was also recording video. I only use it for rendering videos since I use a 1.3G vtx for live audio, but that's also a solution. Something like a FOX800 is not that heavy, does not consume a lot of power, and should work flawlessly in the air when only using the audio channel.

He thanks! The Runcam Thumb seems to be a solid option too. Syncing in post can be a pain, especially when doing it for the first time.

Great idea, i also used the O3 for recording, but i think it can not replace a Action Cam. It only can with settings that makes the flying part terrible. I would protect the O3 Cam more, way to open in crashes. With good 3D TPU parts a Action Cam can last a good amount of time , even with Crashes. I have my Action 2 since it came out.

It definitely can't replace the versatility of an action cam, it definitely has it's place. But for my 'stroll in the park' the OF fine!😁 The missing audio was the only thing that bothered me the most.

I think only the GoPro 11+ can compete with the O3 The DJI action 2 doesn't hold a candle. Most people are not using the O3 correctly, they are not dropping noise reduc and sharpening to -2 and most importantly they are not unlocking 10 bit mode by switching to dcinelike

You can provide the wind noise with a little piece of foam to cover it,that works awesome them

@@_REMIE no problem,it’s not needed like the guy unter video did. to open it up just use a piece of foam from an fc or so and make a little cut in it and push the mic side of the recorder in it ,perfect noise and wind reduction,this works on every cam btw

FINALLY someone is talking about this. It's kind of silly how despite the G2's having audio out. The air unit has no mic. It's not a crucial issue, but I don't see the logic in pulling that feature. Maybe they'll reintroduce it with an O4 air unit now that AV1 compression is much lighter on the bandwidth 🤷

Live audio would be neat! DJI did it with the Potato drone and with a hack live audio worked with the OG airunit. At least an option to add audio would me nice. Like a camera with build in mic like a lot of analog cameras have.

@@_REMIE I talked to tmsome of the developers of the WTF hack of the air unit and they said that while the transmission protocol can sent anything digital you like, there is no internal system to handle recording/encoding audio. So it's something that would need built from scratch rather than found and unlocked in the firmware sadly. I just wonder what the strategy is for DJI to develop the capability for the potato but then not provide it in the O3 air unit. Hopefully the likes of walksnail can put pressure on them as without audio it kind of just becomes an overpriced DVR source.

Ugg.. I was hoping for an hack to the O3 for audio. Installing a microphone and having it as a second source in a video plus finding a place to put it your quad is not a solution for many I would think. Too much of a hassle.

I understand. I made this video back in June, I do still use this method but totally understand it's to much of a hassle for most people. Would be great to have build in audio. A lot of the analog cameras have a build mic, wonder if such an option works for DJI O3. But I think the media encoder doesn't support any audio in/output. I hope there will be such an option in the future. I like flying without the risk of losing an action cam!😄

Thought I'd be getting some LIVE onboard sound. That's what I'm after. Do people really need onboard sound in their recordings? I need it for real time diagnosis while flying. This is the only thing keeping me from fully moving all of my drones over to O3, and I will eventually, but I really, really want LIVE onboard sound.

I'm sorry to disappoint in that way!😬 Definitely would be interested to have live audio. I don't have any experience with live audio but I can imagine it can be very useful when flying far away/behind objects. Or when I crashed upside down and want to hear if the props are spinning free. Even the Potato drone has live audio, c'mon DJI!

Hi Lucky, the O3 can't record audio it does not have a mic. I use a separate microphone to record audio and use editing software to add the audio and video file together. I recommend watching the video.

Haha, good question. This is actually a common thing in The Netherlands! During summer it's a popular recreation area, a lot of people go swim and/or kite-/windsurf there. So to prevent everyone stepping barefoot into a fresh doggy doo it's not allowed to walk your dog during the 'warmer' month but you have to go to a designated area. Basically what the FAA want to do in the US to the RC/Drone hobbyists.😉

I absolutely hate that digital systems have no microphone, sooo stupid! I did this bit when you go out and rip 10-15 packs its a real pain in the butt so synce them up, even to figure out which file goes to the other..... they need to start putting mic back in the damn camera!

Absolutely! Syncing with 6+ packs becomes a pain in the ass. It's not like audio is impossible. The original airunit had it and even the Potato drone records audio AND HAS LIVE AUDIO, COME ONNNN!!

The region where I live is very popular during summer. During winter it's very quite. So it's mainly tourists and they don't own a house. I like it here during summer periode, it's like I'm on a vacation!😅
