The limecrete floor is finally done! Since we started digging out the ground floor back in July 2021 we’ve moved over 100m3 of material and installed all the layers of the new floor, including the underfloor heating.
This is not your typical slab floor. There’s no cement and it uses natural building materials as much as possible: natural hydraulic lime, expanded clay aggregate, cork insulation and sand.
Watch in fast forward as we show you the whole process from start to finish including a couple of small delays along the way.

So impressive the amount of work that the two of you completed, such a commitment to your ultimate goal of a dry livable environment. Bless both of you for teaching your community what a true work ethic is. Your investment of blood, sweat, and hopefully minimal tears will forever stand as a testament to the pact you made to each other, and your relationship will always be stronger for the effort. 🥳

Yes... work ethic is an inspirational part of what Kylie and Guy do. It inspires me to work smarter not just harder and I certainly hope it inspires others to do the same. It feels to me we have lost a lot of that in more societies across the globe. Too many people want to experience 'rewards' without having to work hard to get them. That never ends up very well for most of those people, in a variety of ways. That is sad. Resilience and worth ethic aren't things you just naturally have. You have to choose to develop them and that takes persistence, picking yourself up when you don't think you can keep going and keep building. Of course rest and play are an important component of this also.

Great video, thank you. We are embarking on a similar mission in France and have very similar floors. it's kinda terrifying seeing the amount of digging ahead of us... especially considering most of my time has been spent digging already (since we arrived); house, garden, terrace, and drainage etc. Thanks again, I appreciate not only the labour but the time to make the films too. All the best, Lewis.

Oh just looking at that compacted clay made me remember making mud pies as a kid, then "baking" them on a dark brown fence board. They were very hard, almost like cement. At least there weren't tonnes of rock too. Amazing work, I won't tackle anything like this, just knowing how much muscle strain comes with it, nope, no way. It looks beautiful 😍.

Re the dislocated finger, that sounded very painful. Re navigating the Portuguese medial system without enough language: I arrived in Portugal and within 10 days had started to play Pickleball with some neighbours as a social event. Second time out I blew up my achilleas (that has nothing to do with being in my 50s, being not very fit and thinking I am still in my 20s). At the time I was in between medical insurances and had not organised the free Euro medical card (yes I know stupid me, join the never end chorus reminding me of that fact). That resulted in navigating A&E, surgical specialist, an anaesthetist and after care, all in Portuguese, which at the time I did not speak! The scariest moment was getting an epidural injection into my spine with a non-english speaking anaesthetist (I am not too proud to say I had a wee cry and a little bit of poo came out). This entire situation was my fault so all the stresses and frustrations I felt during the event were on me for not being more prepared and learning the language before arriving here. and I while I can not recommend navigating the system as I did (its was a nightmare). I have to say the care I received, the speed I was given access to services (just 48 hours from hitting the floor to being under the knife) and the cost of the services (1 20th of the cost if I had paid for the same in the UK) was top shelf. I hope your finger gets well soon. take care D

After all the trials, errors, setbacks and materials sourcing, the final result is rewarding. Next is laying the lime tiles. But the satisfaction is the dryness, decreased humidity, breathable floors and walls and in time warm floors. No mold. More light, less decay, rot and shifting. Now floors are level. Foundations have increased support. Walls are better supported and less crumbly. An interior more appealing to the senses. Literally "blood, sweat & tears". Well done you 2.

I think you mean a timber suspended floor … in which case that would be a bad idea given the damp issues in this building, the timbers would eventually succumb to the damp and deteriorate. Also, we wanted underfloor heating, and it performs much better in a screed
