Cold Steel makes some crazy knives... from machete's to katana's... and... to one of the biggest folders one can buy. The Espada XL in S35VN. This €650,- folder is a beast... so big and beasty actually that it's illegal in the Netherlands! But as DBK it is of course our duty to test this knife to it's limits and see if it is worth your money right!? So let's see if we can destroy this folder!!

I love how Cold Steel is the knife company to turn to when you want to just be ridiculous but also when you're actually serious. If I was going on a legit survival trip or something of the sort and was taking a folder it'd probably be either my American Lawman, my Code 4, or AD10.
@nasty98772

Which of the three would be most durable?
@DL-ij7tf
@DL-ij7tf 2 жыл бұрын
@@nasty98772 Almost certainly the AD10 for overall comfort and strength. Its the largest and has full aluminum liners inside the G10. You can get a really solid grip, almost like a good fixed blade handle. The Code 4's handles are solid aluminum which is strong but the over knife profile is so thin that you won't be able to grip it as tightly (and it's painful to try) and they're slick. The Am. Lawman has G10. All have the same blade steel and are stout but the ranking would be the same. The Am. Lawman is the easiest to carry though I'd say. The AD10 is pretty big for pocket carry but doable. I daily carry my Code 4 since it's in the middle and the least expensive, I got it to not be shy about "abusing" it. Also it has a great spine for firesteels and scraping.

Interesting you say that. The Espada XL is a modern format of the Spanish Navaja. The Navaja was a knife carried by the peasant class because only royalty were allowed to carry swords. To even the playing field with some arrogant prince subjecting his serfs to his tyrannical whims, the Navaja’s were made ridiculous large. Humans are basically useless without their tools and naturally the tools are an extension of the human. It is only natural to defend ones life tooth and claw so to speak. It is another thing entirely to be subject to Institutional Violence. As Kung Fu Kane was taught when robbed on the darkened path with his master, some arrogance can not be tolerated.
@chemislife
@chemislife 2 жыл бұрын
@@gaslampnation735 That is also not the only instance of the peasants getting crafty with knives. A german Messer was developed for the same reason. The awkward handle is because it had to have a handle of a knife in order to skirt the laws banning swords from the general public.

@@chemislife Thank you for the history. I heard the Saxon's who wore the seax on their hip constantly used it to not only reap a harvest but have a weapon at a moments notice should marauders come rolling through. interestingly in their culture you could differentiate between a slave and a free man based of weather they were carrying a seax. but even when folks are totally oppressed they make due in numbers. the greatest weapon of mass destruction in its day was the war scythe. just a reaper Sycle pointed up instead of a hook. check out the old paintings. a ghastly sight. they tried to outlaw those too. you can have it but it cant point up... all this sounds too familiar...

I carry the Rajah II on a daily basis. Sometimes I will take the Espada XL. Because I can . I was sold on CS knives ever since I got my Gurkha Kukri in 1095 steel in the early 90-ies. @@junichiroyamashita This is quite complicated, with a lots of exceptions. General rule says: 12 cm blade length max, no one handed folders, no double edged daggers. No concealed carry, knives longer than 12 cm have to be carried in an enclosure if you want to go to crowded aereas. Let's say, no Bowie knife on your belt if you go grocery shopping in the supermarket. But having the knife in a Rucksack makes it OK. For the blade length there are so much exceptions like fotoshooting, knives you use for work, hunting, regional customs and my favorite, the "cause of general use". Like when I go for walk in the forrest with my dog, and I want to cut a stick for the good boy, or if I intend to eat an apple and cutting it into slices before eating, I am allowed to carry literally everything, but no daggers and one hand opening folders. For one hand opening folders I just dismount the thumbstuds, and everything is fine and lawful. The officials state that the law is not to punish serious knive users, but to give the authorities something that they are able to confiscate knives from people with "bad intention". By the way, knives are not seen as weapons but as tools, so they do not fall under weapons law. Machetes are under no restriction whatsoever. You are free to carry them.

And it's great. :) This knife is a beast, I unironically EDC it for a few days. But my leg sweated a lot with such a big banana in my pocket, lmao. I thought about buying specially designed aftermarket holsters for Espada, but now it's just in my collection. And I think it's the best knife in my collection. As a 67 year old I can easily recall several times I experienced " buyer's remorse " after a purchase. I own both versions of Cold Steel's Espada XL and with all honestly I tell you the Espadas are a joy to own. I carry the Aus 10 in my pocket every day. The S35vn version is too pretty to scratch up with everyday carry , but if I anticipated an elevated necessity for me to have my best with me.....the S35vn would easily replace the Aus 10 with no difference in handling experience. The Navaja ( upon which the knife is based ) was an everyday carry of Spanish design for the common citizens who were prohibited from carrying swords . Cold Steel's perceived " unconventional " designs are well rooted in historical configurations of which the average public may be unaware of. Just because you've never heard of it doesn't mean it's outlandish.

The cold still XL espada is an awesome giant pocket knife I've seen a lot of videos of it taking a lot of beatings especially splitting wood I even used mine to cut a small little green tree out of my way dude that my knife cut through that like butter so quick cuz I was clearing a small trail behind a fence up on a hill where there was a neighborhood and stuff a lady paid me $100 to clear a pathway beyond other side of her fence so yeah I took care of that with just my giant pocket knife my cold steel XL espada is a pretty good handing big knife like I took this knife with me everywhere and so far nothing really has happened to me you know in self-defense wise

Here in Hungary, the maximum that can be legally carried is an 8 cm blade. A knife with a blade this big would put me in prison for 100 years! 😂😂😂 You guys are so good, I love your videos! Keep it up! 🙂✌️

You can question the practicality and usefulness, but you cannot question the quality of Cold Steel's products. It's like a normal guy owning a tank. You don't need nor will ever seriously use a tank, but it's still a tank.

I own both Espada’s the XL and the smaller one the large Espada since I live in Florida we have no restrictions on what we carry as long as it’s not concealed if you carry concealed the blade must be 4” or under to be legal to carry. I don’t use or carry either one they are still new in the box and I predict the values to increase on both especially after your great video. I could not believe you actually did a video on a knife I own and it proved it’s self to be such a great knife. They are becoming harder to find even the all G-10 version both of mine are the 7075 Aluminum frames so they are the same as the one you tested. I carry a custom Todd Begg Glimpse in CTS-204P steel and a titanium frame lock it’s value is about the same as a Rockstead folder but I’ve carried mine since it was new made back in 2018 so I paid much less for it. Thanks for the great video.

only one problem: Lynn sold CS to a company that doesn't care if they sell knives or liver pate. CS is not what it used to be and will never be again. Just a brand with a great reputation from the past... We can be glad if the new owners keep these special blades in the catalogue. If we get very lucky, CS will not become the next Gerber (remember, the company which built great knives in the... 70s...)
