He was brave, but still let Austin get back up and still ran away. So he was brave, but not smart. And the cops, they could have kneeled and shot parallel to the ground into Ausin, with the bullet trajectory never being in danger of hitting John, as he is flat on the ground. That's just basic middle-school geometry: a line parallel to a surface never intersects with the surface. Every human being over 12 years old should know basic geometry. I don't know if the cops couldn't subdue him or shoot him because they were also elderly (being in Florida) or they just knew they didn't have good aim. In the end, people tried to help, but were too incapable of doing so. The dog is the only one who was somewhat effective.

Needless to say, there is controversy about the use of brominated vegetable oils “Bromism” can cause confusion, hallucinations and even psychosis. Add to this neurological abnormalities, memory impairment and gross skin postules, and you’ve got a nasty condition. This kid by his own mothers admission was chugging vegetable oil which is brominated vegetable oil. meaning that his story about what he saw could be 100% true. Now why he did the things he did before he chugged the oil in his kitchen, i have no clue. but this does explain the story he told about seeing the face and stuff. surprised no dr told the cops about this.

I am appalled with how Austin's family handled his Insanity. 1- They knew he was seeing demons at night and instead of trying to understand what was wrong or trying to help, even just listening to him, they locked the door leaving him alone with whatever was tormenting him. 2- They knew it wasn't the drugs and yet they waited a whole summer to consider getting professional help. 3- Once they were at the restaurant, Austin's family let him wander for half an hour without following him after he almost ran into traffic. 4- The mother saw him drink vegetable oil and didn't think to immediately take him to the hospital like, fuck it let's skip the formalities, I need to know what's wrong with my son, instead she brought him back to the restaurant with the same people who left him unattended. 5- I would be worried sick after all these signals and what did the father have to say? "What is wrong with you?". Like Austin could control his actions and he was doing all that on purpose, like he was a liability to them. The whole reason they were sitting around that table was to figure out how to help him, not blame him. . The whole crime took place because of the lack of support from Austin family. I hope that now, during his detainment, he will get treated for his illness. R.I.P to Michelle and John

They made a huge huge mistake, fatal mistake by convincing themselves that their son's bizarre behaviour is completely attributable to his multiple drug abuse; they believed that he is behaving in this weird manner under the influence of narcotics. In case anyone is wondering, Austin was found not guilty by reason of insanity and sentenced to a secure mental health facility. I believe it's until doctors deem him no longer a danger to others, but he could also be there the rest of his life.

Not everyone has had to deal with someone who was an addict or someone with such a high level of mental health issues let alone the dual diagnosis. The DID get him help with his addiction, they were going to put him in an involuntary 72 hr mental health hold at the hospital and they, from what it seems, didn't just abandon him. Stop trying to point fingers when we don't know what we'd do in that EXACT situation.

Ive seen people that are threats to themselves (only themself - not even threats to others) get dragged kicking and screaming to the psych ward which helped them a lot get on track with their mental illness and theyre doing fine now, in this story he admitted he needed help to his family which is more than most people with mental illness can reason, so take him seriously, make the appointment, and take him there. take him to the hospital, call the cops and explain hes a danger to himself and others (especially since he threatened to kill his friends, and then attacked his dad), tell the cops hes acting bizarrely/dangerously. if drugs are ruled out, then assume mental illness and try to treat that. there are a lot of things they couldve done other than just locking their doors at night and bringing him back to a restaurant and just hoping hed return to normal.

I am not surprised, I live in Ireland and our mental health services have failed people and society too many times. A guy in my hometown was clearly unhinged, a danger to society, and should have been sectioned/helped years ago but it was like Austen, ignored and brushed over. Especially his mother since he was living with her that summer. He was clearly on drugs, saying he saw demons all over the house, wasn’t sleeping, walking the house’s hallways all night long, drinking vegetable oil, walking into traffic, etc. and the mother and his sister just kinda shrugged it off. If my kids (or my brother for that matter) started doing ANY of these odd things, we wouldn’t just be shrugging it off to go to the beach with friends or grab dinner with dad.

Needless to say, there is controversy about the use of brominated vegetable oils “Bromism” can cause confusion, hallucinations and even psychosis. Add to this neurological abnormalities, memory impairment and gross skin postules, and you’ve got a nasty condition. This kid by his own mothers admission was chugging vegetable oil which is brominated vegetable oil. meaning that his story about what he saw could be 100% true. Now why he did the things he did before he chugged the oil in his kitchen, i have no clue. but this does explain the story he told about seeing the face and stuff. surprised no dr told the cops about this.

A similar thing happened in Sweden as well. A pair of married MDs had a love child quite in late age. They had kids who were in the teens or grown up when this child was born, he turned weird and agressive in late teens. Eventually he improved somewhat and moved to go to university. But he soon ditched his studies for drugs became homeless and such. His grown up siblings tried to encourage the parents to deny him to come home to them. They also locked their bedroom doors at the time he was at their home. Though they had sought care for him, he was hospitalized at a couple of times but as soon as he got better he was let out, and then he mismanaged his medicine, nutrition and sleep. And used streetdrugs. He killed his parents, they caught him quite quick because afterwards he went in his bloody clothes to buy cigarettes and then several people who came across him rang police about a guy with massive fresh bloodstains on his clothes is strolling around.

If my kid was acting like this, and I was in a position of having to lock my bedroom door because he’s pacing outside guarding me from demons, I sure as hell wouldn’t be going on about normal life. And when his mother finds him chugging vegetable oil, she just drove him back to the restaurant?? I would have taken him directly to the hospital because I’d be thinking he’s either having a psychotic break or he has a brain tumor. When someone is truly insane, they can’t identify that for themselves and make a sound enough decision to seek help on their own; family and friends are literally the only hope in those situations.

I think that in this case, the difficulty is that the kid was in college. Not being around him on a regular basis by his family, where they could not observe his actions, definitely was an issue. His peers at school were probably just thinking he had gone off the deep end and just refused to associate with him. There is no doubt in my mind that there is more to the story and he was probably on some type of brain eradicator, but, obviously, those who sold it to him or gave it to him will never come forward. I wouldn't say that you are wrong, but you have a point. Maybe, it was the mother who made him into what he became. On the other side of the coin, many kids are traumatically damaged from their parents going through a divorce as in this case. The reality of the situation is that dead is dead and the dead are not coming back. In the old days, he would have had to pay for his crimes with his life. The justice system we are hovering under now will probably want to rehabilitate him. How, that would be unknown, but he certainly cannot be released back out into society where he could have the opportunity to do it again or even worse. The mind altering drugs were his downfall, along with poor self esteem. This is not an excuse by any means, but my comments are based upon the way this story is presented. It was definitely parental and a non communication issue on many levels. Once he was on drugs, some of these psychotropics, or compounds which act psychotropically, are so powerful you only need to take them once. I really have a deep sympathy for the loss the family had to go through. I understand where they want him to be completely lucid mentally, but you are dealing with someone who is loony tunes. His demonic story could be totally faked for sympathy. It almost looks as if he was possessed by a demon. He could easily be biding his time, acting like he is being rehabilitated, only to wait for the right moment to escape and continue with what he was doing. I do not think wishing him to have a clear mind is the answer.

I too, blame the clueless parents for not packing him up and taking him to the hospital. It just freaks me that she just took in back to the restaurant and dropped him off to his dad; at a public place. A restaurant. Drinking all that vegetable oil may not be poisonous but it certainly is abhorrent behavior. I wonder if his parents were so set on normalcy, not showing cracks that it compelled them to just not see what their son was going through right in front of them. "Here, you deal with him. He just drank all of my vegetable oil. I've had enough!" Thats one possible reaction. But what if it was more apathic? The parents just didn't ha c e the tools, didn't know who to turn to for help. Vyvanse is a drug prescribed to people with moderate to severe concentration issues. It can make a person feel very paranoid too if misused. Or in combination with prolonged lack of sleep and heavy caffeine intake. Being a parent and having made a few parenting errors myself, there's no way I wouldn't have taken my son to the hospital that very evening after I wiped the vegitabke oil from his chin. I'm sorry this family is suffering, so.

We all thought there was something odd about him but nobody could put their finger on it. I was so frustrated with the lack of action Austin’s family took on their own son. They kept on ignoring his obvious signs of distress. The footage of them at the restaurant shows just how neglectful they were, especially when Austin’s friend was the one that chased after him and not his own father. When my sister had a psychotic break and was showing signs of schizophrenia, my parents didn’t hesitate to get her to a therapist and psychiatrist. It wasn’t long before she was put into an outpatient treatment center. She was released and put back about three more times before she finally got the right treatment to make a successful comeback. And even then she was heavily monitored. The house was clean of any knives, pesticides, etc. It disgusts me that Austin’s family did absolutely nothing.

Austin... dont blame the family.. they were blindsided.. when my brother had his first psychotic breakdown my parents also avoided seeing the truth of the situation. Unlike Austin's family we were not affluent. My brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia. We have lived a tenuous life along side him. He never took/accepted the need to take meds and the legal system is useless when it comes to trying to force him to be helped. We have just been lucky thus far.

Drugs can trigger underlying health; AKA teens smoking weed can actually “triggger” schizophrenia. IT CAN NOT CUASE IT but can trigger it and cause more SEVERE symptoms at a younger age. There is also drug induced psychosis. Either way its CLEAR that he SHOULD have had help. I think; could be wrong; but i think a lot of times if someone doesn’t show signs of aggression and are more a danger to themselves and it comes and goes it can be confusing. I have experienced someone being a danger to self and appearing to be delusional but then they are fine and i questioned if i was exaggerating or triggering the behavior. It isn’t cut and dry. In my situation they got off drugs and only paranoia lingered. To this day idk what the diagnosis would be.

He likely needed ego dissolution; a heavy dose of magic mushrooms or a shock to the system like Pushing Tin. Most people walk around with an ever inflating ego that needs a reality check. For most, it would be a midlife crisis when their ego starts to fall short of reality. If that isn't the ultimate cry for help, and he had some previous ones as well, I don't know what is. If you (universal you, not singling you out) hear or see actions like walking into traffic to prove immortality or just this pleading for help from someone in obvious self or others harming distress and/or totally uncharacteristic behavior, DO something to help! It is really your responsibility to mankind in general, and to that person if you care anything about them. Brain tumors can also cause behaviors like this, and mental illness is just as much a physical problem, as has been demonstrated many times through examination. These people are not at fault of anything, and are in dire need of help. It's just the 'luck' of the draw, folks, whether you believe it or not. There is a reason true insanity keeps people off death row, but they definitely need to be removed from society until they can't be helped to the degree that they are not a danger to others, or even themselves.

It was about the same with me and my suicidal tendencies during my studies, which were out of town. I could control them and not follow up on them, but twice I was pretty close to going through with it. I broke down after a certain episode, which luckily didn't have suicidal thoughts, I decided to tell them I had something really serious going on, without specifying, and needed to see a psychiatrist. They would not believe me and tell me "how can you be so sad when you had a perfect childhood (not even close) and always had everything (we just had money)?". It took me going completely silent on them for a month (happiest period I had in the last 4 months) for them to still not believe me but at least take the stance of "well if it gets him talking to us again he can have it". I still kind of hate them for it, but at least I got the help I needed and I'm pretty much healthy now.

Maybe it was a reputation thing; a wealthy, well-to-do family and they probably didn't want be seen as anything out of the ordinary or that their son was mentally ill. I'll never fully recover from this one... This kid's family totally failed him and, as a result, his victims. They had SO many chances to intervene. I mean really, his mom caught him drinking VEGETABLE OIL and was just like, "welp, time to go drop off my psychotic child in a public space and out of my care!" Really?! I hope this serves as a PSA to other parents who have children that struggle with drug abuse. Caring for your child goes beyond getting them clean. You need to BE THERE for them. MONITOR them. Not lock your doors and pawn them off when you can't be bothered anymore... I know this probably comes across harsh, and I don't know their lived experience, but it really feels like there was more they could've done... Not only the family, but his friend too. If my bestie came to my door unannounced and asked me what year she was born, it would be straight to the hospital for a CT scan. No further discussion needed. Edit: Not to mention, the kid WANTED help!! He literally told them he thought he was "going crazy" and ASKED them for help!! Baker Acting him was a step, but they really should've gotten him a dedicated psychologist to see on a regular basis. I bet he would've gladly taken them up on the offer.

it seems like he wanted help but whatever he was suffering from did the opposite. instead of telling his family he's suffering from disturbing hallucinations, he said he was guarding them from demons. instead of telling his family he was suicidal, he said he was immortal and tried to prove it. it's sad to think that possibly because his father's side wasn't helping him properly, he went to his mother for help and she just dropped him back off where he started.

GUY went from EATING with family at a restaurant. To turning into fricking Jason / Michael Myers in less then a hour. SOMETHING is heavenly wrong here! JESUS! THE report is just like a fricking ghost story. So much happening the last week... He made a left turn and saw a white light from a garage. Mr harrouff ran toward the lighted garage to ask for help in getting home. He did not have memory of what he planned to say. But he perceived the lighted garage as an area of safety in his terror. He next recalled seeing a woman in the garage and her screaming at him. He thought that she was a witch. Because of the way she was screaming. .... He got scared.. He screamed when she screamed because he was scared. He believed he was a dog at the time of biting her. He was unsure of the sequence of events in the garage. He best recollection was that he drank a bottle of "alcohol"

I think he was on some form of designer drug like flaca or bath salts, new ones come out all the time and can't be detected in toxicology always especially I'd it's one that's new and been altered, he picked up when he went outside from the restaurant I think. I also believe he has mental health problems that were brought on early and stronger because of his stimulant drug use. Amphetamines have been suspected of doing that. Bad parents and family as well, I know if my brother was acting half as crazy as this guy I would have alerted mental health authorities or police more then once and not just have waited for there supposed baker act call.

The family clearly witnessed Austin losing it and did nothing. The dad screaming “what’s wrong with you” at the restaurant was the only psychological treatment he got. Many schizophrenics are normal until early 20s then quickly deteriorate mentally. People tend to think drugs is the problem when it’s always mental health. Mentally ill people use drugs as a solution to their problems. Our culture still has a pilgrim mindset and sees drugs as a moral failure instead of a cry for help.

I had a old boyfriend that was 20. One day I came home and he had lost it. He was hiding from the drug lords that were after him. Sadly it was his first time. I took him in to the hospital. He had Schizophrenia just came out of nowhere.

Yeah schizophrenia doesnt manifest any symptoms until early adulthood, normally around the 20 years of age (Austin's age), and the family only noticed his bizarre behaviors in early August 2016... the murders occurred in mid August 2016, they didnt have time to absorb the changes in their kid and react appropriately, it takes a while!

There was no family history either, and the drugs he partook in were clearly a means to cope with his changing brain... I dont need schooling on this, as I've been working with researchers for years.
