Completely random, but - stalactites come from the ceiling, stalagmites from the ground. Stala*C*tites, *C*eiling; stala*G*mites, *G*round. ^_^

The way I know it is that stalagmites has a M in mite which looks like stalagmites and stalactites has a T T in tite which looks like stalactites, that's how I remember it

at 6:00 I would like to mention that the extra (sometimes it seems excessive) air is there to provide, the chips bring in a standard form and generally unbroken - otherwise you would be eating crumbs. If you want to argue about this, go see FoodTheory with MatPat. He covers it in great detail (for those that cbf doing that, suck a fat void of air with some big D on top).
