0:00 Jetpac was featured in Donkey Kong 64 as an unlockable after the player collects 15 Banana Metals. No doubt that it's because Rare used to be known as Ultimate Play the Game at the time this ZX Spectrum game was released.

I really like this by what you have shown. Not just the teamwork between you and other KZbin users but also the game itself. 1) It's a fairly competent port of a classic Spectrum game 2) the man behind it sells it as if it was a retail game back in the day 3) when buying the complete package you even get the naked ROM file and your name is in it. 4) it runs on both the DMG/SGB/Pocket as well as anything after the Color if so desired.

Jet Pac was my very first experience with a computer game, too! :D I don't know how they managed to pull it off, but one of my parents' friends had a device he could play it on early in 1989 in East Germany. It was on a monochrome screen and I got a printout of the title screen at the end, printed by a super noisy needle printer on an approx. 3 inch wide paper roll. I was so utterly impressed with all this that it was basically all it took to get me addicted to tech for life ^^

My first Spectrum game too! I was a 20 , just finished my electrical apprenticeship with Thorn Lighting in Enfield. I had found another job and it was my last day. Companies used to pay cash in those days , and they made you work a "week in hand" so when you left you got 2 weeks money. I had a ZX81 and used to dream of the spluttery sounds and colour of the speccy. I picked up my money and drove my 1974 ford Cortina to Enfield town and went to WH Smiths. If you watch "Micro Men" (on youtube for free) Smith's looked just like the shop Chris Curry visits. Bought my 148k spectrum and got the choice of a free game. I had been in the shop a few days before , so knew which game it had to be. Then drove home to have some dead flesh feel , rubber key fun. Got it in the ear from my girlfriend for "wasting" £140 ! It was an odd time to be into computers, seemed like a new system/consul came out every month. The good old days!

My only memories of JetPac come from Donkey Kong 64, which I still haven't beaten because I could never get past the part where you have to beat it on a single life in order for the game to progress. As a result, I only have hatred for JetPac. Why did Rare require you to beat it with just ONE life!? And why was it necessary in order to continue?

@Psythik
@Psythik 3 жыл бұрын
@@foxymetroid To be fair, I haven't played the game since the 90s, so I may be a bit a fuzzy on the details. That said, I *distinctly* remember how difficult it was and your comment just helped me remember why it was so hard to pull off to begin with! Not only did you have to get the high score, you had to do it with just one life. And not just for JetPac, you had to do the same thing with the OG Donkey Kong as well. Even the original arcade versions of the game were generous enough to give you more than one life! Edit: Also, the internet wasn't as widely used in those days so it's not like I could just look up a guide or get advice from other users such as yourself. It was every gamer for themselves back in those days! If you weren't lucky enough to have dialup, you had to figure the game out on your own. I was unfortunately one of the unlucky ones.

Fun Fact a remake of jet pack was made for the xbox 360 by the company Ultimate Play the Game would become that company being Rare the creators of the original Dk Country games, Banjo Kazooie, Conker's Bad fur day and Sea of Theives.

I like the *MizuCat* Game Boy, especially on the back, but I couldn't own one of those without also owning the original gray Game Boy. Both versions are valid in their own right, but while I'm nostalgic for those 80s-90s graphics, I'm more nostalgic for the clean look of the original hardware. Both look amazing, though. To rephrase, I'd want to own both the original gray, _and_ a *MizuCat* Game Boy... but if I absolutely had to choose one, it would be the original gray.

GBDK works, but holy f. is the compiler inefficient. What was it again? SDCC?

GBDK has been improved greatly by many talented people. Check out GBDK2020 for the latest updates. I agree to get the best out of a GameBoy coding in ASM would be the ideal route. But I only know C, and hopefully prove it doesn't matter what language you code in as long as you can make something with it. There are other commercial games written in GBDK which also show this.

@@Asobitech Great to hear! Thanks for pointing that out. Last time I've tested it was in 2016. So a lot might have happened in between. I'll give it another try. EDIT: I personally don't care about the generated assembly too much, as long as it runs, but the code size definitely got a bit bloated back then. Still I think the positives of writing in C out-weights the ones you get from Assembly.

Keep in mind: The original GameBoy LCD wasn't as blurry back when the units were new. This "blurriness" is a result out of their age.

3:22 English Pounds? What do the rest of Britain use then? Euros? ;)

Scottish pounds and Welsh pounds aren’t quite the same as English pounds. Since Bank of England notes are just Bank of England. All are pegged to GBP though.
