That is 100% teak! I can normally tell it apart from Iroko by the end grain. As a boatbuilder I use both 😀 nice find !!

This a perfect demonstration of your unique ability in KZbin woodworking. Where others are using all new material, what you can achieve with salvaged materials is remarkable. And much more relatable, well it certainly is to me. I salvaged my grandmothers old mahogany headboard and made it into a window board to match by office desk! Great video, thanks very much.

For snapped screws like that, drill round them with a plug cutter.
@hansdegroot85492 жыл бұрын
Do you use a plug cutter in a normal drill or in a drill press? I tried a few times in a normal hand held drill but was not successful with that. The plug cutter wandered everywhere.

Absolutely awesome, the stuff you're doing, recycling stuff. I do the same (though on a smaller scale, I don't have a workshop (yet)). Am in the process of building a small greenhouse out of old door frames, doors and windows. So satisfying.. One thing that would add awesomeness, in my opinion, would be to use mortise & tenon joints. They are not hard to master, with a sharp chisel and tenon saw I'm sure this is a skill you master in no time. It would add to the character of the end piece, even if you can't see the dominos or tenons (if not through tenons). Personal preference though, keep up the good stuff :)

I once chatted to a very experienced joiner and he once needed to replace some windows on his house at a time when he was pretty broke. he had some sycamore in storage so he used that and treated it to hell and thought with regular maintenance he might get decent life span out of those windows. proved not to be the case at all he was replacing those windows within about 10 yrs. so morale of the story is the treatment doesn't radically change the nature of timber and its properties. so I think definitely treating will improve the life time but probably nothing like equalizing it to the teak. (sapele or utile would have been pretty durable and affordable option) I like chatting to joiners best training ever:) nice bench!

A beautiful piece of joinery Keith and the video itself felt like 'chatting with a mate in his workshop', sweet. I think your brain wasn't writing poetry, it was composing lyrics. A magnum opus entitled, 'the woodworker's blues' perhaps?

For getting the dominos aligned, you could've rotated the domino machine 90 degrees, using its fence for the height of the domino. If you want a little offset, you can use a piece of scrap between your workpiece and the domino machine.

To the untrained eye it looked fit for firewood or a skip. Great job reclaiming it. It looks great. How many of the coat and hat stands did you start with?? You can't possibly have many left at this stage. It has to be said that you are a great exponent of the use of reclaimed wood.

Very nice bench. Love the colour. As far as the teak, if you want to confirm it is 'teak teak', check the edges of any tool you used that isn't carbide. Teak has a high silica content and will take the edge of any plane or chisel in minutes. It's a lovely wood to work with but it is hard on non-carbide tools.

I was wondering which is more impressive, how you've developed as a craftsman or as a presenter. I think it has to be a presenter, since you were always a decent maker (although now way better) but, as you said, when you started you seemed very uncomfortable. Now you seem so more relaxed and, as a result, more confident ans, well, just better at it. Thanks for sharing all of this with us. And I hope that doesn't sound patronising, as it's not supposed to! By the way, have you come across Epic UpCycling? You probably have, but if not, give it a look as I'm sure you'd enjoy it. All the best.

I have to admit I really miss working with teak. I remember years ago making £14,000 teak worktops and the client wanted them more orange so I put them out in the sun for a bit 😂. I can't imagine what they would be worth now! The only teak that I have now is a chopping board that I made a few years back. I miss the smell of it when sanding it.
