Welcome to Cass, West Virginia and home of the Cass Scenic Railroad, the only place around that you can witness the Parade of Steam.
This place has been a bucket list item of mine ever since I learned about it and not only situated in the beautiful mountains of WV, but it's also home to the largest collection of Shay locomotives around.
On this particular day, CSR will put on a show like never seen before. We're going to witness not one, not two or three, but FIVE Shay Steam locomotives in action as they lash up and put on a show for the thousands in attendance.
Make sure to check out ‪@mattPG78‬ & ‪@PANortheasternRailfan‬ for their take on this event.
Now sit back, relax and enjoy the show!

Thank you for taking us along Jay, the gear driven operation of the locomotives is awesome to watch, and your cameras did a good job of showing that. I would like to see this in person. The whistles gave me the goose bumps and the sound I could feel through the video.

Absolutely amazing to see those steam locomotives, I never seen shay locomotives before. Those whistles are very unique, I love the way they sound. Much different I think then other steam locomotives. Another excellent video JP. That old Cadillac is amazing, I never seen that done before. Amazing to see that

Enjoyed your video. I was fortunate to have ridden the first trip from Cass to Whitaker Station in May, 1968. At that time, I was a member of the Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society and we sponsored an excursion from Huntington, WV to Elkins. It was quite a trip that cannot be repeated. The Chesapeake & Ohio abandoned the line along the Greenbrier River from their main line near White Sulphur Spings to Cass many years ago. It is now a rail to trail.

I have been on cass scenic railroad. I'm also a West Virginian. It was the summer or fall of 69. A lot of development has been done on the top of the knob. Very little there back in the day. A shower of cinders for all. Come ride the train and in your spare time hit Hawks Nest and historic New River Gorge Bridge.

@@JPVideos81there is also a train excursion from Huntington, WV to Hinton, WV in October for fall colors. The train travels along the New River and goes under the New River Gorge Bridge. I have been on that ride too. I was probably 10, so 1965. It was also very nice. Then, mid-october we have Bridge Day, the only time it is legal to walk on the bridge, as it is closed that say. Featured on this is base jumping, catapult and bungee jumping. You can find both events online. It is a beautiful time in the hills and mountains.

I remember Car 54. That’s a beauty!! Puts a whole new meaning to railroad car lol!!🤣🤣. Thanks for the show. Also noticed each each engine seemed to have a different sound. Guessing this tells you which one is coming in or maybe I got wax in my ears and made it sound different. Close up shot the first one looked like it was fixing to come off the screen into my house

This was so awesome! I got goosebumps from the whistles. You can feel, see, and hear the power with these old steam engines much more than today's diesel engines. That's why I love them so much. Oh and there's nothing like an old steam whistle. The caddy was ultra cool. Thanks for taking us along. This is my favorite train video of yours.

These geared locomotives may be old but they are definitely powerful. The local lumber company, mower used these same locomotives in their every day logging operations and it takes a lot of power to get heavy log trains up and down grades that steep. A regular rod type locomotive or even a diesel couldn't do it but these shays can

Awesome video, hope to visit some day. At some point the process of pushing cars on other tracks with a wood beam was outlawed. The beams would sometimes break and seriously injure the person holding it. I was told it was outlawed in the 30s but I've noticed engines from the 40s still have those divets.

Wow, those locomotives are magnificent! Oh my goodness, the whistles, goosebumps for sure, what an amazing parade! Very awesome that you got to go inside, the gears are really interesting, and it was neat to see the snowplow. The Cadillac rail car is incredible and yes, I remember the show "Car 54 where are you?" You are right, reminds me of that too! Beautiful photos and your new t-shirt is really cool! Fantastic video, I have never seen a locomotive like these or a rail car like that either and some great history too! Thank you JP! 💙

❤ Pretty awesome Jason, I've got to ride on one of those... Pulled behind and up in the engine... We got number #9 Shay around here over at Midwest Central Railroad, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. I hope one day maybe you get a chance to come out this way and check them out over there. Labor Day weekend, oh yea that's when they do their Midwest Old Thresher's Reunion, that's the biggest and best time to come... several steam engines trains, a awesome last of it's kind, steam carousel, steam tractors and lot of trolleys to, so much... of course they also do a halloween train and a christmas train which are awesome but labor day weekend is the best. 😉👍 🚂🚃🚃🚃

Car kicking using wooden poles was very commonly used in every Major American yard as of 1940's it was known as (Sticking) or (Poling) which later became outlawed by all major railroads in the late 60's due to many deaths of the wooden poles snapping and Impaling brakemen to the car itself. A lot of Alco units had pole indentions on all their units even the Famous "UP BIG BOY" and many of the freight cars as well, there are some pieces that never got this circle due to the restriction of the car at hand. EMD units where rarely to even have the circle indention on the locomotive at all as EMD used a half circle instead and wasn't used a lot.
