Another factor for vr and shooters in vr is that it is currently in a “Wild West” stage. There are not many if any rules like there are in other formats. This means you have to figure stuff out for yourself as a developer, and make the rules as you go. Hoping someone else doesn’t come up with a better set of rules than you do. This is where modding community’s are going to help shape the future of vr games. Not any big studios want to put in the time and money with such a small player base. I’m excited for the vr gaming industry and can’t wait to see its growth Ofer the next 5-10 years, especially as we are now beginning to enter the next generation of vr hardware!

Brother loaf you made a lot of good critiques on all of these VR FPS games. It’s funny when I started playing VR I went through the exact same process starting on onward/Pavlov and ended on Contractors VR. Just no other VR FPS on the market. You mentioned weapon handling and I will agree that base handling is kinda ass. However, there are things you didn’t mention that may have made a difference. For starters brother, your playing a pretty competitive VR FPS game and your using just your hands to hold the guns. Invest in a VR gunstock and instantly increase accuracy, sight acquisition, precision, and speed. Contractors allows full weapon calibration for every gun in the game too so you can use any gunstock on the market. Just don’t buy one of those not so good cup gunstocks where you can’t figure out how to get your controller back in a cup to aim lol. Anyways, a real physical VR gunstock gives you three connected points of contact when you stabilize your weapon to shoot. Without a gunstock you are left with two unconnected wobbly points of contact that are inconsistent every time you try to aim aka your hands. If I know where my sights are going to be every time I aim, I can cheat the clock and know where to put my eyeball’s to ADS. Just aiming with hands is too unreliable, some people are very good at doing it but I think those are kids who were born with a quest headset glued to their faces. I’m not built like that!😂 I play on quest through the link cable to get PCVR performance/ graphics on Contactors VR and I use a Kobra Wolverine Ultra lite gunstock. They don’t really sell em anymore but you can find similar options online at places like ETSY. Also if a gunstock is just not an option for you, you can tinker around with the virtual gunstock option that Contractors offers. This has two types, type A and B. Both are the same in principle. The virtual gunstock attempts to negate some of the weird hand movements you might have when aiming and tries to keep your gun pointed down range at all times when your using two hands to grip the gun. It’s almost like having an auto pilot feature in aiming. Also your comparison of contractor’s movements to Pavlov and onward was true on the surface. Yes I agree VR strafing needs to be stopped but it’s not as bad in contractors. you said it yourself, the animations are much better in contractors. You didn’t even mention the fact that the game lets you jump, slide, and now is implementing climbing. If you combine “w keying” around the map with jumping or sliding in contractors your left with movements resembling the call of duty “slide cancel” or halo “bunny hopping”. Movements in contractors is kind of evolved compared to those other games. They even added a lazy way to crouch with a button so people don’t have to actually move to slide. Being that those were your only real complaints with contractors I think you should be able to make adjustments on your end and see much better gameplay! Big picture wise you can see a level of progression in graphics, mechanics, mods, and replay-ability starting from Onward to then Pavlov and now at the current king Contractors. The VR FPS scene has only been getting progressively better and with vail around the corner, who knows if Contractors can keep the crown or not. Anyways, for someone who primarily plays/develops deadside you had some pretty good critiques of VR FPS and also a couple “hot takes”. I enjoyed seeing your perspective on this environment. I just had an amazing idea for recoil in vr. You can only hold the gun using 1 hand. This is genius, plus you can now dual wield.

Really glad to see you make this video. Videos like these are my favourite to hear the opinions of others, especially those in the game industry. And VR FPS is a topic that I’ve been extremely invested in. A little context here, I was a competitive Onward player for almost 2 years now but most of the vet players has retired because of the various issues you brought up. Movement is a big problem, the recent patch broken the weapon grip system, and everyone is tired of the same maps. There are custom maps (I made one called Arctic) but there’s so many hoops to get through to get a lobby started. The lack of an auto download means you can only pick maps where everyone has already downloaded. If you have just one person that doesn’t have custom maps, none of the customs will show. I don’t think the open nature of some of the maps is an issue though, it’s just a departure from CQB which other FPS favour for fast pace matches. Open areas means you need to slow down and think of how you approach an objective. Just like you do in Deadside, just with a time crunch in Onward. Competitive League matches are wildly different from public lobbies, which is what got me into it in the first place. However, the current issues makes it really painful to ensure fairness in a league setting. With the number of changes needed and the limitation of having to support the Quest 1, it’s hard to imagine them changing the current game. I think it will have to wait for an Onward 2 release. As for VR FPS with a sci-fi theme, there has been a number but none of them has been as successful as the military ones. There’s Larcenauts, Space Junkies, Solaris, and a number more that I can’t remember their titles now. I had to Google to recall the title Solaris. I believe the big draw of real world weapons in VR games is being able to handle something that your recognise. It’s also increasing hard to build a sense of awe and excitement around an unrecognisable weapon with all the other franchises around. Giving everyone an M4 just seems easier.

Oh man, I hate that you had an unfortunate experience with your controllers in contractors. The handling feels immaculate on quest 2 controllers. Easily my fav of the VR shooters.

yeah I figured that was the case, seems like I was the only person in the lobby struggling so hard just to simply aim. Good thing I can just play the clone wars mod and destroy people there lol

Personally I think it's the cost of hardware. Some people underestimate just how much eSports games are played in lower income countries. The most popular PvP game at any point in time usually has very low barriers to entry in terms of hardware requirements.

I've been waiting for your vr stuff to come out. This was so interesting to see your take on these different games. It's even cooler that's I've played onward and pavlov. I cannot agree more about the recoil in Pavlov. I'm sure you've already heard about this one vr game but hotdogs horseshoes and hand grenades Is very good in terms on weapon functionality and feel, you can play this one objective mode against ai bots called take and hold in it and in that mode you can explore a sheer amount of guns and learn how to use them. But since you've played compound I'm sure you've already heard of h3 vr. Really really good video regardless loaf, I really liked the music choices you did throughout the whole video so so good.

Thanks mang, and yeah I love H3VR, its fun to pop in and mess around with all the random guns they have. As a gun nerd its fun to see all the interesting rare stuff that I don't get to see in any other games, like Stoner 63s. Oh and a lot of the music is just compound music, I use that soundtrack in almost every one of my videos lol
