Hello everyone,
Today's video is very quick - I wanted you all to have a chance to make this amazing corn or potato starch mix before I post the ornament make-alongs later this week - and let's be very honest, the other videos are long enough on their own, without adding this little segment of cooking the starch (Haha, grimace)
I really do think this starch is worth the time (which is minimal) - I have had so much fun working with it and I promise for those of you who struggle getting sticky with the glue and cotton, this will solve that problem for you! yay! so please do give it a try.
I'll be back very soon with the holiday ornament make-alongs and in the meantime I wish you happy cooking!
xo, Rosanna
#craftwithme #diycrafts #cottoncraft
to make the starch mix:
mix one tablespoon of cornstarch (corn flour) or potato starch (tapioca starch might also work but I haven't tried it) with one tablespoon water
bring one cup of water to a boil in a small saucepan
reduce heat and leave water at a simmer
add one spoonful of starch mix at a time, stirring until clear and dissolved
do this with all the starch mix, the mixture should be the thickness of egg whites
remove from heat and let cool, put in jar or other container and keep refrigerated between uses
follow my art on Instagram and tag me @rosannadellart if you share what you make using these make-alongs 😊 I love to see what you create!

Hi Rosanna I have OCD. I'm 51 years old and have a severe Anxiety Disorder which has robbed me from ever having a job, having kids and which made me live like a recluse for many many years. As I'm typing this, my gands are cracked from washing them too much. I have so often said I would just start a KZbin channel but I'm always stuck. No tripod, no lighting, no phone who could make the lovely footage you make, highly insecure and no real concept. You are doing a fantastic job. Take it from me. Your voice is as that of a girl of 18 in a field filled with flowers and you don't look much older. A slow voice? That's a positive thing in this day and age. A simple approach, meaning no camera angle changing every 3 seconds? Finally!!!! This is accessible, pleasant, friendly, creative and lovely. If you read comments that complain... read how sadly short- sighted, short on empathy and patience these people are. People who say rude things while sitting and watching the other doing things... those people are either frustrated, compensating or plain sad nasty people.... Likely less of that latter group. But read all the comments if you want but focus and remember those which are nice. Much obliged for your videos. I say all this based on some of what you said in other videos but wasn't sure if it was better to write this in your last 1. 1 question, won't this glue mold at some point? Have a great day everyone.... 😊.

Presumably a), that’s why Rosanna only recommends making it in small batches at a time and secondly b), presumably keeping it in a jar in the fresh helps keep it “fresh”. I was actually going to ask how long it will keep in the fridge for?

Hello, thank you for writing and sharing your experience so openly. I understand anxiety and also OCD very well and I know it can completely consume someone's life. I really appreciate you commenting because it helps me to know that you find my videos helpful and also that some people actually don't enjoy short, well-edited, "slick" content 🤭 -- but more importantly, others might recognize themselves or parts of themselves in what you share and feel less alone or find some help in what you say. So I really do thank you for all the kind things you said about me and the videos but also for being very honest and real. I love that about this little community, we are here for the real things. ❤ Oh and the cornstarch and mold issue - yes it will spoil at some point. I haven't had it do that in the fridge yet but my feeling is that it would be just fine for at least two weeks if kept cold between uses.. someone said they read 5 days somewhere but I haven't seen any rule written by anyone that I would consider an "expert." I added some drop of orange and clove essential oils to mine for the scent but in theory, that might also help prevent spoilage for a bit longer.

@sarahyates6055 I've had some in my fridge for over two weeks and it still seems fine, I mean I can't tell that it's any different in color or cloudiness or odor.. but I don't have any source to consult about shelf life so far. I googled but didn't find anything specific..

Hi Rosanna! I am SO excited! I discovered your videos about a month ago and have watched and watched and WATCHED! I haven’t made anything yet but I think I have everything I need. I just made a batch of the cornstarch solution and I made an armature out of some too-thin floral wire but I tripled it up and I think it will be ok. I am making a “doll” first. I can’t get it out of my mind so I feel like it’s what I’m being “called” to do. I’m making a little figure of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Our Lady of Fatima, I think. Your videos are so sweet, calming, homey, safe, and inviting. Thank you for sharing yourself and your gifts!

You introduced me to the art of spun cotton and I'm now in the process of making a big batch of Christmas ornaments. In my research I discovered the use of the cornstarch binder. Have you ever tried "bookbinder's glue" or "nori paste"? Both are historical glues used, the former for bookbinding (hide glue) and the latter (starch paste) for printmaking/paper restoration. I don't think it will be strong enough, but MC (methyl-cellulose, what makes the bulk of paper) might be useful too, as I use it to stiff my origami paper models.

I'm making some little snow bunnies, and found some popcorn ceiling patch I had only used a little of and I put it on a snow bunny and its awesome, I'm going to add some glitter to it as well. I have some potatoes I don't think will be eaten I'm going to see if I can make starch from it, seems like fun.

ooooh! A very long time ago, I was in this amazing shop in Italy. Their visual displays were amazing. They had cut out pieces of some of the larger flowers in a lace fabric, and told me that they had used a cornstarch paste like this one to semi permanently adhere them to the wall. The effect was spectacular, and I loved the natural and semi permanent aspect of this old-fashioned wallpaper paste. I had always thought I could do the same in my rental apartment, but had completely forgotten abt it until now. So, not only can I now make cotton ornaments, but have a homemade wallpaper paste to experiment with! Thanks for sharing.

Those ducks are adorable (as are all your characters). Well done on publishing the book, your illustrations are beautiful and I’m sure the story is too. Will you be creating a video of you reading it aloud too so children can follow along? I just wondered as you have such a lovely, soothing voice. It would make the perfect bedtime story, unless something tragic happens to the poor ducks that may bring on a nightmare😂 I’m just wondering if the cornstarch will deteriorate over time or attract bugs, react to damp or temperature change. In the UK we get such varied weather that some craft materials don’t hold up. I’m still going to give it a try as I find the glue a bit sticky. TYFS ❤

@simplybleu2
@simplybleu2 12 күн бұрын
Was your beginning mixture lumpy? when you first combined the 1T starch to 1T water in a small separate bowl? Any veggie starch (ie corn, potato [or even rice]) if it isn’t combined well and liquidity prior to heating it Will result in having lumps. This is also the reason behind adding one spoonful at a time and stirring in the pan , till the water is clear again, in order to ensure that the starch has been throughly combined and disbursed throughout the water whilst it simmers. Trying to hurry the process and not take it slowly can contribute to it becoming lumpy. Just like when you make gravy 😉. Slow and steady wins the race🥰 I hope this helps ❣️
@simplybleu2
@simplybleu2 12 күн бұрын
Hello! me again 🤗 I decided to go make a batch to see if I might be able to trouble shoot your situation and this is what I encountered: 1)Having the heat up too hot, made the starch thicken quicker than I was after. 2) With the last of the mixture to go into the bubbling pan, I witnessed it wanting to go lumpy. I quickly grabbed my whisk and started beating it rapidly whilst simultaneously removing it far from the heat and continued to whisk. The end result was a smooth batch but I dare say, had I not used the whisk quickly, it would have gotten lumpy. In future, in you encounter it again, put the kettle on and try adding a bit of hot water while beating it. Should smooth out the lumps. Because end result the mixture just looked a lil too thick which tells me it just needs more moisture. Hope this helps further! 🥰

Ladies don’t do what I did and use less water than you need to mix the corn starch I made that weird solid/liquid concoction that if you move it fast it’s solid but if you move it slow it’s liquid 😂😂 oobleck

Yes it does that sometimes if you don't stir it up right away 😂

This is the same thickening agent you use in cooking cornstarch and water and then you add it to a warm gravy and it thickens it. I don’t know why you didn’t notice every cook knows this basic recipe.

@lauriepolden6594 yes I agree, I'm very familiar with cornstarch for cooking, but i had never used cornstarch paste for spun cotton sculpting, that's why I shared 😊

You can use it for any of the video tutorials on my channel, or for paper mache or even for a glue substitute - I wanted this video to be a short supplement to my other make along videos which are much longer.
