Hey everyone, thanks for all of the support and ideas! If you want to try this mod on your guitar, I've made a tutorial on a couple ways you can do it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pma5YoyAd5qYbtksi=JRf_YRQpphS0FVCg

If you want to go even wider and a little wild with that Stereo sound: sink the treble side of the neck pickup and the bass side of the bridge pickup into the body so you end up with an across the string fade. When you play across the neck it sounds like the sound's panning from side to side. The stereo guitar I made for myself has 4 single coils set up like that, so you have a left/right fade in each position - Sounds normal when you put it into mono that way.

I was literally just thinking about this yesterday! Definitely want to do a video about it sometime as it's a really nice sound from what I've seen on KZbin.

So now the test should be how this compares to doubling taking and a single takes in stereo. Sounds great, btw!

Dude, this is so cool. I had used one of those stereo adapter cables in the past but the quality of the sound was horrendous at best. This is definitely a much more practical solution and what I love most is that this doesn't just copy/paste the tones (like the cable does) but actually gives tonal differences in each signal. I've been wanting to learn how to solder and work on my own parts and this is giving me reason to do so. I'm going to attempt this after I know more about what I'm doing. Wish me luck and thank you. Subbed!

That's great to hear! I'd definitely recommend you start with something simple if you're just getting into soldering. It took me a few projects to get confident enough to work on a mod this complex hahaha. In any case, I wish you look on your projects!

This is awesome. I've been planning out a Warmoth build that's similar to this, with a HSS setup and much more simple electronics. Just the bridge humbucker through the tip, twin single coils through the ring with a series/parallel switch for those and a killswitch for the middle pickup. No tone, no volume. Not quite as flexible a setup as yours, but it'll do exactly what I need it to do (I hope!).

I did a very similar mod to my Squier Jazz Bass, but instead of using a switch I just took a wire from the ring contact and connected it to the potentiometer lugs that would've been grounded to the pot. So essentially if you plugged in a standard TS cable it would function as normal, but if you plugged in a TRS cable and rolled back one of the volume knobs it would split the signal. It's a really simple mod and impossible to tell it's there without taking it apart.
@JoywalkerMusic

Oh wow, that's ingeniously simple! I'll have to keep that in mind if I do another stereo mod in the future.

I'm about to do (a simpler version of) this to a shortscale VI so I can really pull out the bass qualities in one channel and the guitar qualities in the other. It's an H-H guitar. Looking forward to digging through your guides and anything else I come across!

I'd like to see a strat that was wired mostly normally, but with an option to output the bridge and neck pickups in stereo. Thinking of a wet/dry 2 amp setup. Thanks for your open approach to mods.

I'd like to see a Strat wired producing accoustic sounds with the bottom tone knob used as a volume control and the top volume pot used for controling the electric sounds and then your able to blend the amount of electric or accoustic sounds that you want. it would be cool if you can use two different amps, one electric and one accoustic producing a sterio effect but sounding completely different. (Just a thought) Great video by the way. I give it three thumbs up 👍👍👍

This achieves the same as putting two different mics on one cab. You will still have to record it twice to have that huge wide sound. The difference in tone makes it interesting sound wise, what makes it wide is the difference in playing.

Really amazing. Could you explain materials you use? principally the switch. Is a normal 5 way rotary switch or may be a special one?
@JoywalkerMusic
@JoywalkerMusic 4 ай бұрын
Thanks! I've got a list of parts I used in the description. This was a 5-way 4-pole rotary switch, meaning it has more contacts than a standard rotary switch.

@BabyThomas
@BabyThomas Жыл бұрын
My guitars have a second output for the piezo pickup, VERY good for cleans. I use IR loader for acoustic sound in the PA and blend it with the "electric amp". Not useful for gain tones though... But I just realized it would be an interesting mod to have each bobbin of a humbucker bridge pickup to a separate output. With different amps of course. Neck pickup is not useful for rock/metal chugging. 😎

@@BabyThomas That's exactly what i mean.......why aren' t the pickups themselves wired stereo.....the bobins....... Sir, you may be very interested in JAM ORiGiN tool........it's a superb midi guitar unit for a Laptop which works with any regular electric guitar via direct injection to a DI box then into the USB laptop....... the tool allows unlimited alternative guitar tunings......so you can have over 200 thousand different guitar tunings.........it's a factorial of the amount of frets and strings.... the tool allows Unlimited VST's of VSTi's in series or parallel to process sounds.......your only limit is your laptop CPU power...... it's been around over 10 plus years........but is totally superb. i happened to find the tool for FREE on youtube.......i believe it costs about 129 dollars. Works with ANY laptop even 10 years old or more........15 There are some bewildering examples of the tool on youtube.........playing entire orchestras and such.....via electric guitar.

I have been coming up with a similar project but your wiring seems so much more efficient (though frustrating). What made you go with the rotary switch vs other types?
@JoywalkerMusic
@JoywalkerMusic Жыл бұрын
On most guitars, I would have used a superswitch for this, but I felt like I could only make a rotary switch work with this particular guitar the way everything is laid out.

So the guitar stereo output will be "low level" , might the stereo cable go to RCA plugs so it can go into my old school AM/FM receiver like where the old turntable plugs in?

That's not a stereo guitar, it's just two channels, dual mono. stereo is short for stereophonic sound, if you wanted to get a true stereo image you could have tried setting up the pickups rotated 90° relative to each other, in an XY pattern, but I don't know if that's possible on a guitar

I have active emgs, would a stereo output benefit me ? Can’t seem to find an answer online.
@JoywalkerMusic
@JoywalkerMusic 9 ай бұрын
That's a good question! I believe active guitars already make use of a stereo output jack for battery purposes, so you'd need to put a 2nd output jack somewhere on the guitar to make this kind of mod work. I'm sure it's possible, but I haven't come across any resources for how to do it. Maybe I'll try it myself in a future video. As for how it could benefit you, that's pretty subjective. You could run one pickup through one effect, and your other pickup through a different one. You could record them and hard-pan them left & right (like I do in these demos) to get a wider "stereo" sound. You could record with both outputs and choose which pickup to use after you've finished recording.

Thats not really stereo. The stereo guitar was invented by Steve Ripley and Kramer put it out. Each string had a pan control. There was another version with discrete outputs and an effects matrix. Van Halen Ripley, Top Jimmy Intro and Blood and Fire were made with th Ripley guitar. The whole point of double tracking is to have the time diffences. But what you did was ok.
