Wow. Perhaps the next incarnation of G3 should be Josh, Matteo Mancuso and Max Ostro. I would pay good money to see that.

A whole new generation of noodlers sitting in bedrooms playing to backing tracks who couldn't sell out a phone booth

@@jaceacekalgoorlie So by your logic the best music is what sells best, like a product instead of an art? Shred has never sold like pop and rap and the best musicians have always been people who mostly kept to themselves and practiced all day, as common sense would suggest. Practice makes perfect.

@@danle3181 If we're talking about in terms of technique, they're right. Vai was once seen as a god of technique but it's objectively fairly average for a shredder now. Joe I don't think would even qualify as a "shredder" by today's standards, just a really cool guitarist. I'm not saying their music is bad or worse, just that in terms of technique, things are on a completely different level now. It's because the technical greats of the past just kind of stumbled upon technique and raised the bar. Now people know crazy stuff is possible from day one and have the internet to look up proper technique. The internet is the game changer.

In the end it's all about what you like or not...We all have our different benchmarks, but it's all down to individual taste, which in most cases is constantly evolving. Once upon a time I used to like Scofield a lot - now I can't stand his playing which I almost always find almost deliberately stuttering and unmusical to the point that it sounds deliberately conceived to sound that way. I've met him a few times and he seems to me a very sweet guy, so it's nothing personal. Just my taste. Give me Henderson over Scofield any day of the week. Saw Metheny and Jim Hall play together many moons ago and Jim Hall frankly got on my nerves - now it's the other way round. I can hardly be bothered to listen to Metheny but love Jim Hall. Nothing in Jim Hall's playing had changed just my ability to appreciate it. But these are my personal preferences -nothing more and nothing less. This kid's playing is not my cup of tea either, but he's brilliant and there are some sublime flashes in all those notes. So he interests me and I don't find him unmusical. It's a bit like Adam Rogers - I first saw him in a club with Michael Brecker and couldn't stand his playing, but after a few listenings of his recorded stuff he really started to grow on me. At the end of the day, there are very few musicians so poor that you can't learn anything from them - whether or not you like them personally is another thing. And there is certainly plenty to learn from Josh Meader if you take the time, whatever style you play.

@@Bart91127 You're welcome. The problem with opinions is that most people simply state them as "fact" without announcing that they are expressing a personal viewpoint. This is why the brilliant 16th century French writer Montaigne stated that he likes to hear opinions prefaced by phrases such as "I think that"... "I feel that ".... "in my opinion", etc. We're all guilty of omitting such qualifying phrases before personal viewpoints, particularly here on KZbin, where there is a tendency to gratuitously insult those who don't agree with our opinions.
